Legion Character Names

Hi all, I've started work on a shattered legion combining loyalists from several traitor legions and before starting some background to explain my force as ive been thinking over what to name my characters. the novels have given a rough idea of the name style of each legion. ive done this before this my previous marine forces (such as how my iron wardens have names of russian and slavic origin) and heres what im thinking:

Sons of Horus: Roman names, mainly roman commanders and generals.

Iron Warriors: Ancient Greek, from the illiad and odyssey and other sources.

World Eaters: Barbarian, like from old fantasy novels and characters.

what have you fellow warriors come up with your names, would be fun to hear and give me further inspiration :)

Not sure I agree with that; if you look at some of the main Heresy SoH characters, a lot of them have names derived from the middle east; Jubal, Tarik, Horus, Abaddon, (and Ezekiel/Ezekyle). Really only Nero Vipus stands out as being roman in style.

Roman names is something i much more associate with the Ultramarines.

Raven Guard

terrans: Asian  eg Soukhounou, Balsar Kurthuri

deliverancians: monosyllabic last names. Eg Branne Nev, Nevar Hef, Aloni Tev, Solaro An.

But that's not a hard and fast rule, 'Arkhan Fal' is a terran and 'Gerith Arendi' is deliverancian.

SoH names are predominately not Roman. Sejanus, for example, is Latin, but there's a difference between Latinised Greek/Hebrew and Latin

source: I study Classics and for the sake of my mental health I will not waffle on about this

EDIT 2.0: FW make a far greater effort to be more consistent in their use of names than the earlier HH novels, where I think Legion culture wasn't taken into account as much

World Eaters were supposedly Scandinavian and Germanic themed

Emperor's Children were Latin

Dusk Raiders, Storm Walkers and Night Lords Terrans would have a lot of British/English themed names, as they were mainly recruited from there. (Shadrak Meduson was called Smith or Smyth, Nathanial Garro as examples)

Sons of Horus had a hebrew, Latin theme, as pointed out by Marshal

Blood Angels and the Dark Angels were named through Angels and Latin themed.

To be honest I think every Legion has it's spread of names. Abaddon for example is a fallen angel in christian mythology, same with ahriman whereas that particular theme is attributed to the Dark Angels. It's true that Legions with a more Greko/Roman feel such as the Ultramarines, Emperor's Children and Iron Warriors have some names that lean in that direction but they're hardly the exclusive preserve. Bottom line, if you come up with cool names run with them. The vast majority of Legions drew recruits from a wide base so a fairly significant breadth of cultural variety is inevitable.

What about word bearers names

They tend to be harsh, guttural two-part names with hard consonents - lot's of K's, G's and Q's by the look of the dramatis personae of The Unburdened. Asides from sounding vaguely Mesopotamian (and even then I'm probably missing the mark with that guess by a fair margin) the names seem to be more along the lines of made up as they've gone along rather than stuck to a culture. Again, plenty of room for me to be wrong about that.
