+Grimdark Prince Adam+
Hey Guys! So far I have been a collector of the WH40k Space Wolves armies (you can find my army plog in the hal of honour), and a few things happened: 1. I read the HH book about the Wolves. 2. The Burning of Prospero boxed set came out. 3. I painted a Sicaran Battle Tank (for the WH40k army). All these factors proved to be too much and I have also become a victim of the Horus Heresy setting, and decided to build a HH VI Legion army. The plan is to have some infantry (MK II and MK III, a few odd MK IV), terminators (cataphracti and tartaros) an assault squad (MKII and MK IV), 3 deimos predators and 3 deimos rhinos, a spartan, a venator, a leviathan dreadnought... and whatever else I will find fits into the army. The first 5 tactical squadmen are ready, any C&C very welcome: http://i.imgur.com/kwAwUjV.jpg?1 http://i.imgur.com/JSZhqGB.jpg?1 http://i.imgur.com/La2kqSe.jpg?1 http://i.imgur.com/tYDlcF8.jpg?1 The quality could be better, I know, but I don't have a good light source, I hope to do better pictures in the future. helterskelter
They're awesome! The only problem is that kink in the heavy chainsword, which a little hot water or a hair dryer can sort out, otherwise keep going. Only 1 and a bit months til inferno! +Grimdark Prince Adam+
That kink was the best I could do, it didn't want to straighten more than that for some reason. It was bent much worse as you can imagine ;-) And thanks! I'm also looking forward to inferno, can't wait! helterskelter 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/329328-the-wolves-are-coming-legion-vi-vlka-fenryka-by-adam/#findComment-4607713 Share on other sites
Rangaman
I just had a dig through your 40k Wolves log and I am really surprised at how different you have made these 30k Wolves look. Dark, grey and gritty, I quite like it! Dosjetka
Terrific work. :tu: How did you go about painting the armour? +Grimdark Prince Adam+
Rangaman - thanks! I wanted them to capture that HH Vlka Fenryka feel from the fluff/ilustrations, which means darkness and grittyness Dosjetka - thanks, here's the recipe: 1. Dawnstone 2 coats on all the black-primed armour. 2. Wash of lahmian medium. 3. Wash of Drakenhof Nightshade diluted with lahmian medium around 40:60 (more or less, I don't know exactly). 4. Drybrush with Dawnstone of areas with most light (generally from the top). 5. Highlight of all edges with Administratum Grey. 6. Highlight with White Scar those edges where light would reflect. 7. Heavy sponge of Administratum Grey. 8. Light Sponge of Rhinox Hide. The whole method comes from the last experiences with my WH40k wolves, and is quite quick and easy. Needs some practice though to master. I tested many methods on my WH40k wolves, and this has the best time-cost/effect ratio Arminius_Warbringer 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/329328-the-wolves-are-coming-legion-vi-vlka-fenryka-by-adam/#findComment-4607752 Share on other sites

+Grimdark Prince Adam+
Thanks again guys, always keeping me motivated I just finished the next 5 tacticals and the first whole 10-man squad is finished. As you might notice, there are mostly MKIII armour, but also 2 MKIV and 1 MKV. The MKIII represent the veterans, already crusading for a long time. The MKIV are replacements, which came aleady equipped with the newer mark even before the heresy started and supplies became scarce. The MKV represents a reclaimed tactical from a separate outpost, who although returning to the main bulk of the legion still needed re-equipping, and the only available armour was the rebuilt on the spot one, not from the main forge worlds. Such a mix and match of marks will also be visible on future units. So here we go with the new ones, this time with better pictures: http://i.imgur.com/g7bC60l.jpg?1 http://i.imgur.com/mssthGB.jpg?1 http://i.imgur.com/q76QaEJ.jpg?1 http://i.imgur.com/wSsG8hu.jpg?1 http://i.imgur.com/QemLkxH.jpg?1 And also the full 10-man unit: http://i.imgur.com/LrtR95Y.jpg?1 http://i.imgur.com/zdSRCEf.jpg?1 As usual, any C&C greatly appreciated Stoic Raptor, HvitrValdyr, DimDim and 5 others 8 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/329328-the-wolves-are-coming-legion-vi-vlka-fenryka-by-adam/#findComment-4616991 Share on other sites
quinnwolf
Guy on the left "shoulder barge!!!". Really nice, weathering is perfect, eyes look cold and calculating. Shoulder pads are spot on. How did you achieve the slushy/melting looking snow. +Grimdark Prince Adam+
Yessir, shoulder barge!! it is Thanks for the comment, the melting looking snow (I'm happy it's visible) is achieved as follows: 1. Put some Citadel snow on the base (the new pot with the ready-to-use snow formula, I don't remmeber the name). Spread it randomly, and make 1-3 thicker piles here and there) 2. Immediatelly apply some Vallejo still water in a few places, let it flow a bit from the freshly put Citadel snow. And that's it! quinnwolf 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/329328-the-wolves-are-coming-legion-vi-vlka-fenryka-by-adam/#findComment-4617154 Share on other sites
quinnwolf
It's Valhallan blizzard, it has a wet looking effect when you apply it actually but then dries out so will try this. Thanks for the explanation. As an aside, what part of Poland are you from? I'm potentially moving to Warsaw in a few months and was wondering what the gaming is scene is like. Will potentially only be bringing my 30K wolves so is there a heresy community? I know there are a lot of painters there at least. HvitrValdyr
I love the blue eye lenses instead of the traditional red. I may give that a try on my Wolves when Inferno drops. betrayer41
Gorgeous wolves, mind me asking how you did the lenses? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/329328-the-wolves-are-coming-legion-vi-vlka-fenryka-by-adam/#findComment-4617919 Share on other sites
+Grimdark Prince Adam+
Thank you very much for the comments! Huh, by popular demand the recipe for the lenses: 1. At some point in painting the model I apply the agrax wash into the lenses to make them dark inside. 2. To start I apply some Baharroth Blue on the surface of the lense, without going into the recesses with it. 3. Then I wash the lense with Girlyman Blue (the blue glaze paint), making sure there isnt too much of it on the surface of the previous layer. 4. Apply a neet "-" of diluted white, to the forward part of the lense. And that's it, I think it is quite easy and quick to do. I find the traditional way, showed for example in the GW videos, too hard for me if I don't want to spend the evening working solely on the lenses Huggtand 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/329328-the-wolves-are-coming-legion-vi-vlka-fenryka-by-adam/#findComment-4618392 Share on other sites
+Grimdark Prince Adam+
Hey Guys! I need some advice - take a look here: http://i.imgur.com/Y7rWRmp.jpg I was wondering how to paint the vehicles for my army. The dawnstone as base (as in the case of power armour) looked to be too dull when applied on a test vehicle fragment. Generally I wanted to go with a lighter grey tone for the vehicles, and on the picture you can see a weathered test fragment using administratum grey. There will also be black and red areas on the vehicles. What do you guys think? Will the lighter grey tone still go along with the darker power armour? Or will it be better to stick with the dawnstone darker tone, to exactly match the power armours in the army? I know I should do what I like, but I got an actual dilemna here Also, the lighter tone will give a more striking contrast with the intended black and red areas, while the darker grey will probably look more... well, grimdark Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/329328-the-wolves-are-coming-legion-vi-vlka-fenryka-by-adam/#findComment-4622160 Share on other sites
Baluc
I would suggest keeping the same shade. I feel your pain about the largely uninteresting grey tones on vehicles though. The grey does supply a great place for heavy weathering and gear though. Chipped paint, dirt and rust all great looking under or on the basic dawnstone. +Grimdark Prince Adam+
Hey Baluc, thanks for the advice, I actually went along with it and it was probably a good choice I already started paiting, and maybe will post a WIP later on. +Grimdark Prince Adam+
Ok, so the shading of the grey plates (with the exception of the most darkest recesses) is done, and I'm quite satisfied that I went with the darker grey tone. Next is the pre-waethering of the grey plates, and then the black and red colors. http://i.imgur.com/qVuT579.jpg Stoic Raptor, Warpsbane, BLACK BLΠFLY and 1 other 4 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/329328-the-wolves-are-coming-legion-vi-vlka-fenryka-by-adam/#findComment-4625483 Share on other sites
+Grimdark Prince Adam+
So I'm currently waiting for the FW transfer sheets to arrive, and therefore can't finish the rhino above. It is currently in the pre-weathering phase (so almost finsihed). In the meantime, I wanted to share my conversion of a centurion, based on the MKIII armour and some parts of Gaygor. I was contemplating building Gaygor himself, but actually he's just too wolfed up and 40k-ish for my taste, so will be the source of parts for 3-4 characters. How do you like this conversion?
