Deployment Renegades

The whole army taking up all the space...

Turn 1 Renegades

Well of course he sizes me...

Anyhow, for some mysterious reason my opponent is struck by bad luck, or he had not pleased the dice gods. He didn't score a single wound or hull point during his opening turn.

He did move up a bit with his units.

Turn 1 Deathwatch

I came crashing down with the librarian and his unit in the first drop pod on the right. Second one with the captain went for the centre.

Librarian used the Beacon and called in a Rhino to support.

My missions were to secure a marker on the right flank and kill the largest enemy unit. This was the zombies.

I also had many other missions, mostly kill things and hold objectives I held already.

With some ugly shooting, by shooting at unit in the back but still within reach, I could flame through 2-3 units with my frag cannons.

In turn 1 I took out all the zombies and a total amount of around 50 infantry models. The librarian used the Technomancy power to force one Colosus to snap fire.

Casualties from the right flank

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v378/VashDime/40k/Tournament/P1070915.jpg

Turn 2 Renegades

Yet again, all his shooting results in perhaps 2-3 casualties spread out on different units. Never seen such horrible scatter from blast weapons. He tries to charge me, but runs into a wall of fiery death.

Turn 2 Deathwatch

My third drop pod doesnt arrive. In it rides 5 veterans with stalkers, and a terminator.

But I push on with the other units. Plow through his Tanks with close combat and frag cannons.

Charge into various units with the captain and his unit (which he detached from).

Turns there after

Renegades can't do anything. They just keep on pushing forward, hoping for the best, but the bodies just pile up. He does kill some random model here and there, but never any full units.

By the end of turn 4, he is left with one artillery model.

Game ends 28 - 0 in my favour.

Game 2 was versus Chaos Iron Warriors

He fielded

- 1 lord

- 6 chosen with 5 plasmaguns

- Dread claw

- 3 Vindicators

- 1 Mutilator

- 3 obliberators

- 2 Mauler fiends

- 3 sorcerer in a powerful formation

This game went to hell. I again deployed first. and got to chose to go first.

Chaos had deployed risky (I think) and had drawn the exact powers he needed for a "long shot" trick. He needed to size the initiative for this to work. ... and of course he did size.

Basically he moved 12" with his vindicators, casted power of the machine spirit on them and the don't need line of sight/ignores cover power, and then shot at my right flank. Hitting all in the stalker unit, both rhinos (apocalyptic blast!)

He just rolled 5 and 6's. And on the rhinos... another two 6's. Both explode.

My moral goes down the drain. I need one Rhino in the enemy deployment zone. This to block line of sight, keep a unit safe inside, gain mobility etc etc. Now both were down.

Main mission was to get a relic on the middle of the board.

I play badly due to my moral was low after this strange onslaught. And I was starting to feel the effect of my cold.

Loads of tactical misstakes were made. I went for killing instead of going for the objectives on the table.

In the end, I managed to kill of most of the Chaos army, but I forgot the relic. The relic had "ran away" with a mauler fiend to a far end of the table while I was busy fighting for no real reason.

I drew bad maelstrom objectives on top of it all.

So I lost that part too...

But the game ended with 3 - 25 in Chaos favour.

I put some pride in that I was the only one to be able to stop his 28 - 0 clean slate. And also to beat him down to only 3 models by the end of the game.

Now, I will say that he had some tremendous luck in all his games. From what I have heard, saw and experience :)

But he was one of the few at the local tournament who was a dedicated tournament player and lots of experience under his belt. Must add, this was my first loss to this guy. But he has improved a lot over the years that has passed since I last met him. I learned a lot from him.

Last game versus the Chaos players brother. He played Catachan

To be honest, I have no real clue what he fielded.

- Command squad

- 2 platoons

- 2 Baselisks

- 1 Demolisher

- 1 command vehicle

- 1 Manticor

- 2 Vultures with punisher cannons

- Rough riders

- 6 autocannons teams

- 2 psykers

- some advisors

His formation rules gave him the ability to give orders to vehicles. Such as ignore cover and the like...

Game was strange. Astra Militarum, not able to go out of their deployment zone so easily, gave me the upper hand on Maelstrom objectives. The Eternal war objective was one in each deployment zone.

Towards the end, his rough riders had claimed my objective, and my veterans from the CAD had claimed his.

In the end the game ended 15 - 13 in my favour.

High lights of the game. Terminator making 17 saves vs a Vulture.

Me failing a 4" charge into an immobilised Basilisk.

If we had more time, I think I would have been able to wither out more of his units, and perhaps tipped the score more into my favour. But to be honest, I was so under the weather at this point, my opponent and the audience were playing my army for me. I couldn't make heads or tails of my own units. Kudos to my opponent who forgave my strange behaviour and just made sure I was having a good time instead.

4" fail charge

Not much standing in their way now

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v378/VashDime/40k/Tournament/P1070947.jpg

One Rhino is fully loaded :)

So incredibly weird Vash.

I read the first army list and thought no chance for Deathwatch. Especially with T2. And the incredible bad luck the Renegade player had actually continues on to you in game 2.

I read the second list. There's nothing wrong with it, but it's a CAD with what appears to be the Cyclopia Cabal. The long shot power is indeed a long shot. I thought you would win this one....

Then the Astra can be such an amazingly bad match up for us.  You did the smart thing imho by going for right psychic powers against the vehicle heavy armies.

What I did like was you played fairly balanced stuff. That's great to see.

Man it sucks being sick through a day of heavy thinking at a tournament. I know it wears on you.

I'm happy to see you were drinking Deathwatch issued Emperor's tea. ;)

Thanks for doing up a tournie report. Great pics, and I'm still trying to figure out the bizarre outcomes. I think each game went opposite of how I would have guessed. It's so funny how at the end of the day the dice still have a lot to say about these games. It seems like you did really well though. I don't think Deathwatch are a walk in the park for anyone. Although it doesn't appear you hit any nemesis armies directly, I think you fared very well against some tougher match ups. Congrats on a great showing!

Thanks mate.

I feared the Renegades a lot. But we played on a table with fairly much terrain, So that made his deployment "wonky". It was also night fight in turn 1, that effected the the hits he actually got. I got a 3+ cover save with I passed when he did hit.

The Chaos list... my friend went up against him in his first game. He had all the tools to take him down turn 1. This was with psychic powers. My friend rolled his power to take out 2-3 Vindicators. Succeeds on 4. Chaos tolls 5 dices, and scores... 4 sixes!

Second power to save the day a bit. Again power goes off with 4. Chaos takes his last dices, and scores enough 6's again to cancel his second power.

As my friend said... He won by pure luck in the first game. Then he heard of my game... he just shock his head.

Last game versus Necrons. I think he sizes again, takes control over the 3 pylons, and with some strange miracle he takes out pretty much everything of importance, including the pylons in turn 1.

Deployment was longer than the game.

But, I will say, this Chaos player is the most experienced tournament player who showed up. Most of us there were casual gamers. The only two tournament players were Chaos and Catachan. Of course I got to meet both of them. Oh and the Necron player.

The Chaos player actually has great knowledge of all the armies. And know what spells he needs to win. So with three lvl 3 psykers he has a big chance of getting what he needs.

My friend who met in the first game ended up with second place.

I told him after their game that he should give up. Sometimes its better to lose or draw a game in the beginning. This to get match ups that are easier to win and take home more points. And so he did. Tabled the other opponents.

But in the end, I have tabled his army in two turns when we practiced :D

I got the honor title of "the guy who should have had second place" due to I was the only one who broke the Chaos players clean slate and forced him to his knees (model wise).

Oh yah, and that tea kept on coming. The tournament hosts were keen on keeping me fit for fight.

I am now recruited to host the next tournament. And to be honest... thats where I belong.

Why do you say that? Would prefer hosting to playing?

That Cyclopia Cabal finds its way into many Chaos lists. It's their answer to LibCon but has its own very strong, inherent power. But out of what you mentioned I would have guessed the Renegade army to win. How you cleaned out so much in your first turn is beyond me. Lol

Did they have any hobby scoring or was the winner based purely on battle points ? I would have assumed if they did paint judging, you would have scored quite well.

So was it a 3 game tournament? And hindsight being 20/20, what in your list would you change?

Well in the past I ran a hobby store with two other guys. And I was in charge of hosting tournaments. Between 16-24 players. And I do miss that for some reason.

This tournament had four prices.

First place - Chaos

Second place - Space Wolves

Sportsmanship - Tau

Best in show - Tau

*Best in show army was a mix of painting quality, theme, army composition etc.

I was a bit bugged that they allowed multiple prices for the same player. In a small tournament I would spread out the prices. It was not "cash" prices, just nice trophies :)

In the Best army in show I did fairly well. But the winner was a commission painter.

Here are the armies that participated:

Starting off with the Best in show Tau army

Some very nice looking armies... FYI Tau can never win best sportsmanhsip. ;)

I've seen some really well played Iron Hands do exceptional stuff. The amount of Astra Militarum type armies is definitely surprising. Still looking at that Renegade army it blows me away you took that out.

I think the Space Wolves I see there would have given me problems. I find the ability to hang way back on that type of army is a good thing. I have played against that variant of Wolves with TWC and Wulfen and it's so incredibly resilient and stabby. Very difficult for a 24" army without 'force' to hang in there with. And the Tau... I play against them so much but still they are as anti-marine as it gets.

I think you did great all things considered. Seems like a nice venue as well. I hope you do more stuff like that in the future, plus your army looks great.

I just sold a very large Necron army that had one Pylon at one time... I can't imagine facing 3. That army got pooched by the Cyclopia Cabal though and Necrons have no psychic defense.

So no changes you would make to your army if you did it over again?

Well I think I make some minor changes. I didn't use the Watch Company formation rules that much. I pretty much wounded on 2+ most of the times.

So in hindsight, I would have tried to get a unit of bikers in the CAD. This to gain more ability and support the front lines faster.

Well the Tau player who won the Best Sportsmanship... he was a great guy :D He just liked mecha, didn't really know that they were good. He just joined with what ever models he had (and followed the restrictions of course). Even with a mediocre Tau list (spare the Stormsruge) he placed him self in the lower half or perhaps middle.

I have no real idea where I placed my self yet. But I would guess in the top ranks. Only one person got over 20 pts per game (the winner).

Great batreps! I miss fully-painted tournies . . . sleep.png

Yah, they are great. And we miss them too in our local area. We have to travel "far and wide" to join tournaments of quality.

But, the initiative was taken by some friends of mine and their gaming club, and now they invited me to join the management. I was in the past the local tournament host for 16-26 players. Arranged tournaments every other month. And they were always full, and towards the end larger tournament "officials" came to visit. I was able to host on my own, with no help, have 100% painted armies, 100% painted detailed tables.

But of course. It helped a lot that I worked in a game store :D One of the owners (a friend of mine) is a former Golden winner and today lives partially on commission work for our hobby. And his joy in this game is making terrain. So there was always loads of new terrain.

As you might notice... I miss tournaments and my "golden days" in this hobby.

Same.  Older editions may have had uglier models and sillier rules, but the shine of nostalgia is hard to ignore.  I sort of understand where RT/2nd Edition era guys were coming from back when I started 17 years ago.

You talking about me? :D

Touched the game during RT, and started actively playing during 2nd ed.

Man 2nd ed took ages to play just a single game. But it was fun as hell. Very detailed, and written with a bit of humour.

Congratulations Vash! It looks like your list performed very well against a nice variety of opponents and despite the warlord being sick ;)

I miss fully painted tournament too, even if I couldn't attend at the moment! Fully painted armies add so much to the gaming experience IMO, props to you and your gaming group for organising some.

I noticed there is a very cool Raven Guard army in there. Any chance of getting a look at the list and how it did at the event?

Thanks mate. Fully painted armies is a standard for us in our more local tournaments (though others are welcome of course, but its hard for others to travel for a smaller tournament).

The Ravenguard ended up second last sadly enough.

Yikes! That's hard on the eyes. Thanks for the list. Hope to see more of your Deathwatch in action.

Cheers!

Did have a battle with a new Deathwatch list today. More casual than usual for me.

Faced up against Thousand Sons. I did intervene during his deployment. His deployment was really not optimal, so I rearranged his deployment to counter my alpha strike. But from that point on he was on his own, well mostly. Still a casual game so advices where thrown out now and then.

Game ended with a  win for the Deathwatch. Used the tournament point system to determine the winner. Slightly modified mission, as I am experimenting on how to construct the missions and point system for the next tournament (going to host, no play).

Anyhow, game ended 20 - 6. Though if the game had ended in turn 5, Thousand Sons would have won, 8 - 18

I filmed at the end of each phase, and will be doing a battle report of it later on this week.

Sounds cool! It's always encouraging to see newer players getting into the game, and I'm glad to see you did your best to "train" as opposed "ego-stomp". I'm sure he still enjoyed the game, though! happy.png

Hehe, well he wasn't new, just didn't realise I could pull in an additional unit with the Beacon. And he didn't know about our famed Frag Cannon. :)

But he isn't as experienced as me, so I did hold back in the beginning, but had to pull out all my bag of tricks towards the end.
