Apparently I'm Playing Order of the Valorous Heart Now . . .

What happened was I was browsing Sisters stuff on eBay, can't remember exactly why, and I saw someone had listed one of the old GW banners. I looked into it and saw they had 4 of them for sale (along with the Sisters and Immolator transfer sheets) and I realized I had to have the Order of the Valorous Heart banner.

I thought about using the banner for the Order of the Glorious Reprisal, but that just wouldn't work. It deserved to go on a proper Order of the Valorous Heart model. So, I'll be stripping the banner bearer I did for the boxing day bash (I sure hope that clear coat isn't to troublesome to get off) and repainting here all in Valorous Heart black.

 

So, since I'm apparently playing the Order of the Valorous Heart now, I needed someone to lead my detachment. Fortunately I already have a character: Canoness Commander Luxia Telnayan, but she needed a model, and the Canoness model didn't seem quite right, so I'm getting the Sister Superior pictured above. It might be a little strange when she's the only one in her command squad wearing a helmet, but whatever.

 

I think I'm OK with this. I absolutely adore Saint Lucia, and I like the Valorous Heart's focus on penitence. I think it will be neat to have a force of one of the Orders Majoris, and I was starting to run out of things that my army just couldn't do without. Wanting to have 2 complete Sisters armies should fix that. Maybe it will even get me to do some painting . . .

 

Anyway this is the thread where I'll post anything that has to do with my Order of the Valorous Heart Commandery (still feels a bit strange saying that).

 

The first order of buisness :P is the loadout for Luxia's command squad. Canoness Raedia of the Order of the Glorious Reprisal has 5 heavy flamers in hers (crap, I'm going to need like 4 more heavy flamers ASAP!), so I want to go a different direction in this case. I'm definitely fielding that gorgeous banner as soon as I have a banner bearer painted well enough to do it justice (it's gorgeous not necessarily because it's that high quality, but because it's vintage GW :P), which I'll probably run as a blessed banner, since the fluff says each order has but one Sacred Banner of the Order Militant, and there's no way Luxia has that. I think the banner's rules are kinda lackluster, but whatever.

 

I want this to be a unit that doesn't get killed imediately, but I really like assault. I'd go for power weapons if it wasn't next to impossible to convert them aside from the power sword Superior, and I don't want to use Sister Superior models here. My next thought was meltaguns, since they are assault weapons, but they'll just disembark, shoot once, then get shot to pieces. I like the idea of 2 meltimeltas in a rhino, but the banner has to be outside of the vehicle to take effect. Flamers have the same issue as meltaguns. This leaves storm bolters and heavy bolters, or just generic boltguns. Just leaving them with boltguns feels like I'm wasting my points even bringing them.

 

Hehe, I can't believe I'm saying this, but I'm considering Storm Bolters, since you can move and fire them. The banner already makes for a sub-optimal unit, so why the heck not? I don't want to give them a transport since then the banner does absolutely nothing. With storm bolters they could walk around and hold back/mid field objectives or something. Heavy bolters would work too I suppose, though I'd have 4 at most, which makes me ask why I'm not just bringing a Retributor Squad. The other question is whether I'm bringing my Sister hospitaller. I could, but I'm not sure she adds all that much to the squad, and she certainly detracts from shooting. Thoughts?

Well, only 1 Exorcist is a bit of an issue :P but fluff-wise I can't see them committing more than one such relic to an engagement of the 1500 point size, especially when it's only led by a Palatine.

Hate to say that I cut up four of those banners to put on the roof of my repressor conversion.

 

I know how you are about counts as and the like, but I have a Repentia themed Valorous Heart counts as Celestine if you want one. Im not using her anymore and it would be nice to have get to the table top even if its not mine.

And thanks for the welcome! I just love Saint Lucia's fluff, scarce as it is. It plays heavily into Inellia, an ascended Dark Heresy 1E character I created (she Order of the Valorous Heart of course).

 

When I go to the shop to play on Friday I'm going to tell everyone I'm starting a third army :P

 

Edit: when I started Sisters I never really considered doing one of the Major Orders. I found I liked VH enough to retcon them into my Order's founding :P I bought that banner kinda on impulse, and it progressed from there. It must be the Emperor's will!

I've been slowly working on Argent Shroud myself, and I just purchased one of those banners from the same guy.

First question: once I get a model I want to put it on, how the heck do you do so? And is there a nice trick to make it flappy?

Hum. Well, I'll be puttig it on the OOP Sisters banner bearer who was made to hold these banners. From what I can tell you pop it out, along with a couple sections in between the two pictures then fold it around the pole and glue it together?

 

Maybe someone who actually owns one of these relics can give a better answer.

Yeah. I don't know if I'll get things painted any more often than I have been (still not a huge fan of painting) but I do want to get some done. While I'd love to start with the command squad, I want them to look good so I should start with something less important so I can figure out what I'm doing. Maybe I'll actually do some hilighting this time. :P I'm thinking that when I do actually get around to painting, I'll start with a squad of Dominions, though I don't have any meltaguns primed yet . . .

 

On that note, since all of my previous models have just been color+wash, how would I go about hilighting the robes and armour? I think it would make sense to do different things for each, to give them a bit of contrast, but I don't really have any idea what I'm doing. Any help would be appreciated, though I'm going to try and keep it simple. :)

I saw that banner too, I'm pretty tempted! I'm a pretty slow painter myself, so most of my army is unpainted too! Your list is pretty similar to what I have usually run, I would add a storm bolter to the exorcist. Nothing is worse than getting a weapon destroyed result and loosing your missile launcher, the storm bolter gives it a 50% chance of avoiding that. As far as painting goes, I would use a few regular battle sisters to test a few different methods of highlights, since black can be highlighted with greys or blues. The warhammer tv tutorial on the deathwatch marines should give you some ideas on how thats done. Also, if you didn't know, instead of trying to paint with pure white on the linings I would use ulthuan grey (I think that is the right name), It works better for me since I can go back and highlight it with white. Hopefully someone who is a better painter than I am can come and give better advice.

Yeah I think the storm bolter is a waste of points but i seem to be the only one. It comes up maybe 1 in 4 games and even then isn't guaranteed to save the missile launcher. I'd rather spend the points elsewhere. The list is kinda a departure from what I normally do, but not too much.

 

Thanks for The painting ideas' nice and simple, which is all I want to do at this point. Maybe I'll hilight the armour using grey and the vestments using blue. That should provide some subtle contrast. What shades do you use for hilighting? Now that I'm around a shop that carries citadel paints I can get them without paying shipping from GW :D

I actually really like using the space wolf colors since they are kind of a blue grey, so the fang, russ grey, and fenrisian grey.  There are a few others I used, but I just can't remember the names right now.  I am also still trying to work out what combination of colors I like most for highlighting black.

So I've changed my "Chapter Name" in my profile to say Order of the Valorous Heart, but I haven't changed my profile picture, partly because I'm used to the one I have, and partly because I don't know of any properly drawn properly colored pictures of Valorous Heart Sisters (the deatils of the armour need to look right, and they need to have black vestments with white linings, white gauntlets/gloves, and a red chaplet Ecclesiasticus - anything else is plain wrong).

So I just tried free handing the Valorous Heart's badge on a sister's sleeve. It looks kinda ok, but it took too long just to make it OK. I think I'll look into decal paper and printing out transfers to use. Has anyone else tried this? Because not having the Order badge on the shoulder just isn't an option.

She looks really great (even though Repentia models . . .), and I love how she's standing on a Simulacrum. I'm not sure how I would fluff her, since I don't even really consider Celestine to have any divine powers beyond the occasional vision from the Emperor and some relic wargear, but I do plan on using the Newestine rules from time to time. What I'm saying is that I can't promise to play her regularly, but it looks like an awesome model, and I will make the effort to get her on the table periodically (and get pictures up here on the forum (hopefully I remember to do that)). She certainly looks to be beyond my skill, since I haven't even tried hilighting yet :P

 

And holy Emperor yes I would love some Valorous Heart Decals to put on the sleeves. You can find the transfer sheets on eBay, but they don't come particularly cheap :D I could put the decals on HQs and Elites and what not. I'm thinking of trying some kind of stencil for the others. Have you tried putting the transfers on a Sister's sleeve before? It looks like it would be difficult to get it to sit flat. Anyway, I suppose I'll PM you.
