D Company 4th Elyam Rifles -A Plog-

The Mad Hermit

Recommended Posts

Well met, my brothers in uniform!

This is me getting back on the horse (so to speak) after a number of health issues and a general malaise more or less ended my last plog. This is me returning to the glories of the Astra Militarum... oh, Hell.

I hate that name. We're men of the Imperial Guard and we always will be.

So in a future post I intend on shedding some light on the background of the Elyam Rifles and more specifically, D Company... but for now I thought I'd start with a few pictures.

The reason I've chosen to start with a Heavy Weapons Squad (and mortars, at that) is that a good friend of mine is wrapping up a 20-year career in the U.S. Army. For most of his enlistment, he was a mortarman in the vaunted and much-celebrated 82nd Airborne.

I promised him that I'd immortalize him in plastic, so I figured I'd start with Guardsman Flores and his mortar team.

I hope that you, my brothers in arms, will forgive the poor picture quality and believe me when I say that I think the minis look better in person than they do in pictures.

Also, I'll happily answer any questions you fine men might have.

~Salute~

Thanks for taking a look and commenting, Lord Commissar.

Up next I have the other two mortar teams to finish out the squad, then I'm going to work on an Infantry Platoon I think.

Before I put in any real work on the grunts I'll probably put some paint on a couple Ministorum Priests that I converted from Empire Flagellants.

I'm going with an idea I had with the last plog I did where each platoon will have a colored stripe on the left shoulder to denote where they belong.

I like how the red stripe came out on these guys so I'm pretty sure that I'll go with Khorne Red for the 1st Platoon's color.

I did things a little different with the base from what I normally do. Normally I'll paint the sandy base with Steel Legion Drab, then wash it with Nuln Oil before drybrushing with a mix of Steel Legion Drab and Aged Bone (from Reaper) but with this base I did the wash with Agrax Earthshade.

I'm pretty happy with the change and will likely keep going with it.

The green of the fatigues is Reaper's Olive Green over a base of Reaper's Olive Drab/Death world Forest (the colors are IDENTICAL), a wash of Athonian Camoshade, another bit of Olive Green then a drybrushing of Olive Green and Pale Olive (both from Reaper Master Series).

The armored parts and the mortar are Olive Drab/ Death World Forest with a light wash of Nuln Oil.

The coloured stripe offsets the nice greens well so that's a good plan :) Good that you've got your paint scheme boiled down to a simple method, saves a lot of time and effort :tu: I like my mortars even if they could do with being cheaper, I don't really do HWSs much but when I do the mortars tend to appear ;)

I, too, like my mortars... but I haven't played a game of 40K in going on 11 years, now.

I keep up with the current rules and codices, though.

I thought I'd share where I got the sandbags from with you all, my brothers-in-arms.

They're from the Tamiya 1/48 Scale Brick Wall, Sandbags, and Barricades set.

http://i63.tinypic.com/bg4gab.jpg

Each box comes with two sprues of the sandbags:

http://i63.tinypic.com/bg4gab.jpg

http://i63.tinypic.com/okbox.jpg

I've discovered that each sprue gives me enough sandbags to do up three HWTs with nine bags each and still have two bags left over.

So, having two of the boxes (without buying any more... which I likely will) I'll have enough sandbags to make a total of four of my Heavy Weapon Squads be properly dug in with a small wall of nine sandbags per base.

Now I just have to figure out which weapons to make dug in.

So while working assembly-line style on the other two mortar teams I felt a need for a break and, as I've decided to go back to my old hobby standards of painting something every day... I dove into one of my custom-made Ministorum Priests.

So, here he is... I give you the first priest of (possibly) five:

The other mortar teams required to round out the initial Heavy Weapons Squad should be done today or possibly tomorrow.

Thanks for taking a look.

Thank you, Sir.

I was originally going to make the banner a giant parchment complete with text but once I started putting paint to the miniature, I realized that the idea of freehanding all that possible text was outside of my skill set.

So instead I went with the idea of the banner at least in part to add some extra color to the figure. I figured that Red and cream/bone/white-ish would add a nice contrast to the green of his robe (which is the same as the fatigues on my Guardsmen).

I've been experimenting with free handing, just finished a bit actually. I'm starting small with scribble script and lettering and it does quite well now. Not having steady hands makes the scribble look a bit more realistic :P The simpler you can make it the better, but it's good to try something new :)

There's going to be a couple of the other priests that I've put together that will give me an opportunity to try some freehanding some text and such so I look forward to the challenge.

Those figures should, however, be a little less intimidating to do then the ragged banner of this first guy.

Thank you for weighing in, our_baz!

I'm also really happy with how the 1/48 scale sandbags fit so well with the Guard.

And yes, indeed, the priest was a modified Empire Flagellant. I've made five because once I started tinkering I just had so much fun it was hard to stop.

So here's the second mortar team for the squad:

They're getting a little easier to paint now that I've done two and a half of them.

Comments and criticisms are, as always, welcome my brothers.

Don't forget you can mix and match kits, so have some standing HWT troops for example (especially for mortars, which don't require a kneeling model). This also means more models you can spread your HWT bits across ;)

The next few HWTs are most likely going to get a little more of the mix-n-match treatment.

I'll be honest, this first squad started as something I was putting together out of boredom so I didn't get too creative in the construction of the first two teams that I built. The rest of the army is going to have a lot more forethought put into them, I promise.

I have plans for a good amount of the kneeling legs I have scattered among the Heavy Weapon Squad boxes I have (I have five more full squads of three teams each) and the handful that I had bought off of a bits site many years past that no longer sells bits.

It is that bits store that has provided me with enough Catachan Command Squad beret-wearing heads to do an entire ten man Vet. Squad with them and still have about seven left over to spread throughout the rest of the army.

So I'm halfway done with the third mortar team for the first Heavy Weapon Squad in the army but I got sidetracked by a second Ministorum Priest.

Here he is in all his mad glory:

I tried a little something with the freehand. I have a set of black pigment liners in various sizes. I initially wrote out the upper part of his parchment with the 0.1mm black pigment liner. It actually cut into the paint and did damage to the initial paintjob. So trying to fix it made it into the mess the finished project is that is on display.

So this morning I finished the third and final mortar team to finish up the Heavy Weapon Squad.

So, I present to you, the third team (incidentally, the order that they were painted was not the order in which they were built)...

Sorry for the not-so-stellar pictures as I'm still learning how to get better results.

So, in the last few days I've been going through what I call my Big Box of Bits and Junk™... a box that once held a pair of boots that I purchased back when I had started working a job many years ago and is now full of all my bits (separated in various zip-loc bags) and many half-finished miniatures in various stages of completion. Anyway, in said Big Box of Bits and Junk™ I found... this:

for a closer look...

The heads in question are varied and interesting, with more than a few of them looking as if they have some bionic bits and bobs.

I'm looking forward to incorporating them into the army as it grows.

Big update time!

Since my last post I've completed the first Platoon Command Squad and started a bunch of Inquisitorial Henchmen/Acolytes/whatever-they-ares.

So, without further ado, I give you... PCS #1:

Sorry for the poor quality pictures. I'm still learning, but not as fast as I'd like.

If anyone would like a closer look at any of them, I'll make that happen.

Thanks for looking, brothers!

I love the vox officer with the map. It reminds me of being cold and wet while on manuevers with the 10th Mountain and annoyed because company radio'd you asking you for your coordinates which forces you to drag out the damn map to check your location. :)

Well, I finished the first Infantry Squad for First Platoon.

Here's a pic:

and a closer shot of the Sergeant:

As always, I'll post more pics of any of them if you want to see them.

Also, feel free to comment and such.
