infyrana
Haven't had a Spartan to build, but from all that I read I sympathise. Are you planning to bring up a highlight of white over the ivory grimed finish you have already? The reason I ask is that you have some very white gear for your apothecary which stands out clean and bright against what would otherwise be a very grimy and unkept marine. I do recommend keeping the contrast, but maybe toning it down so that it blends in even if it's just a little grime in the corners. Bukimimaru
Now you mention it, he does look uncharacteristically clean. I bought some rust oils and some Forgeworld weathering powders over the weekend (but havnt picked up the nerve to use them yet. lol). I think I'll wait until I've got the whole army painted to this guys standard and then batch-paint all the grime and weathering on at the same time. Bukimimaru
I've got my first game tomorrow. (For reals this time, hopefully my opponent doesn't bail out at the last minute this time). Just 1000 points to get my head around the rules. I'm taking: Praetor with Chainfist and combi-metla 2x Terminator bodyguards 10x Tacticals with a Power Scythe 10x Tacticals witha Power Scythe Mortis Dread with twin assault cannons Sicaran with las-sponsons. I think my opponent is taking Blood Angels, so expecting lots of infantry. Bukimimaru
Progress! The Spartan is all assembled. The tracks were fine for the most part: I've finished my first 5 tactical marines: I've sprayed and inked my Vindicator with Laser Destroyer Array (the gun option is magnetised so I can switch back to a demolisher cannon if I need to): Finished painting the Praetor (minus the base) And I've added a second Dread to my army. Melta and Powerfist. Finally, here's a shot of my complete army as it stands. There sooooo much painting to be done, but I'll keep cracking at it. I've got Typhon and some Grave Wardens on order and if I'm really really really lucky, there's a slim chance I might be getting some 2nd hand Death Shroud Terms next week too. Fingers crossed. infyrana
Progress is always good! I like the idea of your swappable Vindi, did you use left over Land Raider lascannons, file them down to fit and make a second 'docking' block for them or something? Great idea however you did it, I might have to steal it! Bukimimaru
I used some left over Lascanon barrels, glued them to a spare Rhino door and then cut it to shape. (Plasicard would probably be smarter, lol) The slot behind the barrel fits a magnet perfectly so I can switch between the Demolisher Cannon and the Laser Destroyer. It doesn't look as cool as the official model but it was so much cheaper considering I picked up the tank 2nd hand for about a tenner. Sadly I didn't manage to get the Deathshroud terminators, the bidding went way beyond what I was willing to spend considering I'm building this army as cheaply as possible. So far I've spend a grand total of £9.85. Everything else has been made up of spares, left over calth / prospero bits and/or donated from other members of my gaming group. Admittedly I'm about to blow a fair amount when I confirm the order for Typhon and The Grave wardens come payday. I might try to get the Support Squad finished tonight. :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/330832-deathguard-from-the-very-first-model/page/2/#findComment-4676103 Share on other sites
infyrana
Thanks for the update, great idea! Yeah budget building can be tough but definitely gives you a better appreciation for what you have. I'm not sure I would want to grab the Grave Wardens over the Deathshroud though if I owned a Spartan, especially considering that your Deathshroud aren't fixed into a single heavy slot which is at a premium in heresy lists. You can always score some Calth termis later and convert them into Grave Wardens using cheap heavy bolters for their grenade launchers, but the Deathshroud models are so gorgeous looking and are a nice melee beatstick for your spartan option :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/330832-deathguard-from-the-very-first-model/page/2/#findComment-4676218 Share on other sites
Bukimimaru
I will be getting some Deathshroud, but only as a body guard unit for Mortarion when I eventually buy him. As the other people in my gaming group don't usually take Primarchs (yet) I'm going for Typhon as my HQ and the Grave Wardens look like a better match with Typhon than the Deathshroud guys do. (from a modelling perspective, not rules-wise). I'd love to get a Mastadon one day, but the price is so obscene I think my fiance would break my legs. >_< Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/330832-deathguard-from-the-very-first-model/page/2/#findComment-4677245 Share on other sites
Bukimimaru
More updates. I finally got my hands on the big red book with the DG legion specific bits in. Durak Rask looks great fun to play, so I've kitbashed him out of a few spare parts I had kicking about. Its a Blood Angels Death Company Hammer and some Ironhands backpack that looks totally bad ass. I didn't have a Volkite Serpentia so I mashed on up out of an old gravgun, a Plasma Pistol and the clip of a boltpistol. I've done a smidge more work on the Heavy Rocket squad: I've built my second Tac Squad Sgt with a cheap Powerscythe (thanks to ebay). Most excitingly of all, I'm a hair's breath away from finishing my first 10 man Tac squad. Just the grey and white highlights to go. Bukimimaru
Little update. I found an old Apothocary shoulder-pad in my bitzbox, so I've completely finished my Primus Medicae now. :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/330832-deathguard-from-the-very-first-model/page/2/#findComment-4686374 Share on other sites
Bukimimaru
I've been a bit lazy the last week or so and then I was distracted by the release of Warlord Games new Test of Honour set being released, so I've not done much since my last update. I have finished the first 10 man Tactical Squad (sans shoulderpads) and I've made a start on my Cataffracti Terminators, but most excitingly of all, I've just had email confirmation that my Grave Warden Terminators are waiting for me when I get home from work. How should I build these guys? I cant see a viable reason why I would replace one of the grenade launchers with a heavy flamer as they all already have flame template weapons. Am I missing something there? Also, I'm tempted to give them all Chainfists... is that overkill? Charlo
Give em a couple of Chainfists and they become a really good all-purpose unit. And yeah, other than looking cool, pretty much no reason to replace the grendes IMO. Bukimimaru
Man, chain-fists are an absolute slag to attach. :/ I absolutely adore the Grave Warden kits, they are soooo pretty. <3 Plan for tonight is to get these guys sprayed and inked and then get Durak Rask fully painted for his first game tomorrow evening. :D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/330832-deathguard-from-the-very-first-model/page/2/#findComment-4705170 Share on other sites
Charlo
They're the best Legion Specific TDA in my humble opinon, for sure. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/330832-deathguard-from-the-very-first-model/page/2/#findComment-4705226 Share on other sites
Bukimimaru
I've got two more Grave Wardens coming in the post from a very nice chap I was chatting with on a DG facebook group. All my current ones are sprayed and inked: I had a game on Friday night with 3 of my friends and we ended up playing doubles; Deathguard and Worldeaters vs Word Bearers and and Ironhands. I'm still very new to the game and I'm still learning what my opponents special units can do, so we got creamed pretty bad, but it was a fun game. All the Psychic stuff the the Word Bearers can throw out is pretty nasty, but the really problems we faced were against our opponents Quad-Mortars and Scorpius Whirlwinds. The amount of ignore-cover ap3 blast templates was very frustrating and we were loosing 2-3 full squads of marines a turn. Not really anything you can do against stuff that doesn't need line of site, ignores cover and doesn't allow for saves. :/ Is this something I'm likely to see a lot of in 30k? It makes taking an infantry heavy army seem kinda pointless :/ Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/330832-deathguard-from-the-very-first-model/page/2/#findComment-4708030 Share on other sites
Charlo
It is, sadly, one of the hallmarks of the 30k system: " most infantry." You just gotta have the right tools to deal with Quad Mortars and Whirlwind Scorps, nothing a podded Leviathan in the right place can't solve, or using transports. Apothecarys are usually a must too (though they don't help with the Whirlwind, admittedly). How many Quads did they have? Anymore than 3 is just bad sportsmanship, really - especially if they're Phosphex (though DG sort of laugh at them with a 4+ FNP!) Bukimimaru
He only had the 1 fortunately. Sadly I cant take any pods as my army is currently built to accommodate "the Reaping" rite of war which disallows any deep strike. I'm glad I saw them in action as I was going to buy 3-4 of them (not really knowing what they could do) because they look cool and seem really appropriate for Deathguard. I think I'll just pick up two now, as any more than that seems a bit of a douche move. I think once I've got some spare dosh I'll be investing in a load of Rhinos to keep my infantry in. Bukimimaru
Two more Grave Wardens arrived. Still waiting on Typhon though. :/ I've got my first Heresy even coming up at the end of April so I really need to pull my finger out and get these guys painted. >_< I've sourced my last flamer, which means all my squads are now fully kitted out with there correct weapons, all I'm missing is 60+ Deathguard Shoulderpads. Looking back at the way this thread started, its laughable that I thought I would have the self control to buy one unit at a time and paint them up before buying the next unit. I now have an army of mass infantry and several large tanks and almost none of it is fully painted. yet. >_< With that in mind I'm going to make a fun !,500 point core that I will focus on painting before anything else. HQ: Typhon Elite: Contemptor Mortis Dread with Assualt Cannons Troop: 10x Tacs in a Rhino (all the fixin's on the Sgt.) 10x Tacs in a Rhino (all the fixin's on the Sgt.) 10x Vets (2 plasma guns, plasma pistol and Scythe with infiltrate) Heavy: 7x Grave Wardens Vindicator with laser destroyer (dozer blade and ceremite) Comes to 1,500 points on the nose and the only things I need are two Rhinos and some shoulderpads.
