Cardinal Armandus Helfire

Helena the Virtuous, Prioress of the Convent Sanctorum

Arch-Confessor Kyrinov has been the scourge of blasphemers and heretics across a hundred worlds. He purged the Chaotic legion of the Demagogue Lord of Valaan, accompanied the Valhallan Ice Warriors on the Crusade of Repentance and crushed the Jihad of Duke Selda. Kyrinov is known for unflinching adherence to his duties and his harsh treatment of those who deviate from his strict interpretations of Ecclesiarchal doctrine. Kyrinov often quotes from the scriptures of Confessor Dolan and strongly agrees with the Great Confessor’s belief that no sacrifice is too great.

Kyrinov is seen by most as a vocal, tyrannical figure but his patience and shrewd mind often serve him better than any amount of sermonising and lambasting of the masses. It is claimed that Kyrinov would wait until the sun grew cold and the planets stopped spinning if it meant that an opponent to the Ecclesiarchy would fall from grace. Kyrinov’s fiery speeches, wild gestures and melodramatic acts of faith hide a very cold and logical approach to his work. A prime schemer and manipulator of people, Kyrinov is an impossible foe to out think or placate.

Kyrinov is most famous for his handling of the Molovian Heresy. While posing as a staunch supporter of the renegade Governor of Molov, Kyrinov spent three years gathering evidence against him and rallying support for his overthrow. With hundreds of secret meetings with industrial and trade leaders, Kyrinov stirred up a cartel which plotted to topple the greedy Governer Vlachek from power. Using his followers’ power, Kyrinov’s real message was able to reach almost every member of Molovian society. With the support of the workers’ unions and the traders, Kyrinov was able to lead a popular revolt and wrest the reins of power from Vlachek. Vlachek’s cousin was installed in power in his place and it must be noted that Molov now has startling reputation for efficiency and honesty when delivering its Ecclesiarchal tithes. All this was achieved with no other influence from the Ecclesiarchy or any other Imperial organization.

ECCLESIARCHY RELICS

Mace of Valaan: The Mace of Valaan was presented to Arch-Confessor Kyrinov during his battles against the Demagogue Lord of that world. The massive weapon glows with a shimmering field of force and can smash apart armour and bone with a single blow.

S +2 AP 4 Melee, Chaos Bane, Concussive, Master-Crafted

Chaos Bane: The Mace of Valaan gains the Fleshbane and Armourbane special rules when the wielder is within 6” of one or more models with the Daemon special rule.

Icon of Chiros: The Icon of Chiros counts as a Simulacrum Imperialis. Additionally, friendly models within 6” of Kyrinov have the Zealot special rule.

WARLORD TRAIT

Fanatical Command: The Warlord, and all models in the Warlord’s unit, re-roll failed To Wound rolls in the first round of each close combat – they do not get to re-roll failed To Wound rolls in subsequent rounds of close combat.

Fluff: All fluff text is in italics and is copied verbatim from the 2E codex.

Profile: In the same way as Armandus, Kyrinov’s WS 5 gets him a 4 in this adaptation. Since Armandus’s BS 6 got him a 5, Kyrinov’s 4 makes a 3 sound right. As with all humans, Strength and Toughness will be 3. Wounds will remain unaltered at 2 and, and Initiative will be the normal human 3, which works nicely since he had a 4 in 2E and the 2E stats are inflated compared to modern editions. Leadership 10 is a given.

Wargear: I have kept his 2E wargear, so a MC Bolt Pistol, flak armour and a Rosarius, and have added frag and krak grenades since those are now standard. Pretty straightforward.

Ecclesiarchy Relics: In my homebrew Sisters codex I simply kept the e-codex rules for the Mace of Valaan, partly because it helped make it play differently than the Sceptre of Vengance and the Rod of Grace (though the rod is awesome and zaps people at range so it’s already pretty unique). I am going to carry that decision over here. In 2E the mace was S6 Dam 1 Mod. -3 and could not be parried, so a pawer maul is kinda closeish, minus the save mod. In any case, since the Mace is still actively in the Sisters codex, it makes sense to carry it over, and it makes Kyrinov a potent character against Daemons, and though I don’t like to base these rules adaptations on fluff, it is the Mace of Valaan, and Kyrinov purged a Chaotic force from that planet. AP 3 could be justified, though it would lessen it’s distinction from the other characters’ relics. The Icon of Chiros is a bit tricky. Its 2E affect granted terror (and therefore immunity to fear and terror) and gave Ld 10 and re-rolls on fumbles (1s) in close combat to models with LoS. Much of this is meaningless in the modern rule set, and Fear is incredibly underwhelming. In the 3E rules from Citadel Journal 49 it simply gave enemy models within 6” -1 Ld, which is meh, and not representative of the 2E rules. In the 5E WD ‘dex it gave fearless within 6”. One option is to simply combine these two affects, which would give a penalty to enemies and a buff to allies, like in 2E. In my homebrew codex, it counted as a Simulacrum (which in that version of Sisters rules gives re-rolls to AoF tests, which were over or under squad size like in C:WH) and gave Zealot within 6”. This was in part inspired by Kyrinov’s 5E special rule, Heightened Fervour, which made him count as having a Laud Hailer and a Simulacrum. As an important relic, it makes sense to have the icon be a simulacrum +. I’m not super attached to the idea of the Icon giving a penalty to enemies, since I’m not sure it’s entirely thematic (why would Eldar care about some chunk of marble that some human preached from about their corpse god (no disrespect to our radiant and almighty Emperor on Terra intended)). In this case, I’m going to stick with my choice in the homebrew codex, though I’d be open to changing it.

Warlord Trait: In the Citadel Journal 49 rules, Kyrinov’s Fanatical rule let him and his unit re-roll “missed close combat rolls” on the charge. This is about the only rule left to represent at all, so Kyrinov’s warlord trait lets him and his unit re-roll to wound in the first round of combat, mirroring the wording of the Liturgies of Blood rule Astorath has (and that all Blood Angels Chaplains used to have).

Special Rules: He has the standard Priest special rules: IC, War Hymns, Zealot. This takes the place of the Confessor rules from 2E (I’m of the opinion that generic priests didn’t have any really useful rules until 5E, and even then War Hymns being added in 6E was just great). Really, unless I’m missing something, all of Kyrinov’s rules from every incarnation have been covered in one way or another, except arguably his laud hailer from 5E, but the 5E laud hailer give you a 1/6 chance of gaining a Faith Point every time you attempted an AoF, which is nonsensical in the current rules. In any case, as he is, Kyrinov is, I hope, a clean a flavorful character. Very good at buffing his unit. Don’t forget he has War Hymns at Ld 10!
