Nusquam
I mean you would have had to run up the board and weather a whole turn of shooting anyway before to get that close. Now its within 9" turn one with a reroll. Better than before. I am also sad hes the only source of anything chapter tactics related Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/334083-did-shrike-get-the-shaft-again/page/2/#findComment-4765885 Share on other sites
Claws and Effect
We won't know if he's the only source of chapter tactics until they do a full Space Marine codex. Which will be a while. There are a lot of chapters, I can understand them not wanting to delve into that kind of detail when they have to work on every other faction at the same time. GreyCrow
I wouldn't overexpose the units to get the 9" charge post deep strike. It's unnecessarily risky even after rerolls! The Raven's Talons are total beast now. Look at this : - He hits on 2+ rerollable with 5 attacks (4.86 expected hits) - Rerolls to wound with AP-3 - D3 damage - Considering deployment/movement abilities, he can pretty much hop around the battlefield waiting for the right time to reroll the charges. This is seriously beasty! Here's the breakdown depending on enemy toughness : - T2- : 4.7 wounds - T3 : 4.3 wounds - T4 : 3.6 wounds - T5-7 : 2.7 wounds - T8+ : 1.5 wounds Even T7 seems reasonable, especially when you consider that each wound that goes through will deal 2 damage on average. He's good at picking fights by avoiding bigger targets, mauling weak enemies, but the D3 damage now actually make him quite a strong proposition for dueling/finishing off characters with a T below 8. But since he has got no tank, any fight that he doesn't finish will see him at a serious disadvantage. But that's the Raven Guard for you, sneaky backstabbers that fight unfairly. And win. MajorNese
He won't singlehandedly kill units, though he is a lot more dangerous than before with the changes to AP. I intend to build a jump pack group to capitalize on that, including several squads of assault marines and a shooty support (inceptors). Drop a big unit, shoot stuff with the close range heavy bolters and several plasma pistols, and maybe charge stuff. Next round, with 12" move and reroll charges, something should be reachable. Also, vanguard vets are now just 2ppm more than regular assault marines, giving +1A and access to good stuff. Storm shields 5p, that should be a must have to keep them alive. My Fast Attack slots are seriously crammed, that should help. GreyCrow
Haha yeah, that sounds like a good tactical plan ^^ Agreed that Shrike won't kill units on his own, but the Raven Guard has never been about personal glory. It's about getting the job done for the Greater... for the Imperium ! I really see him as a finisher unit. Nusquam
I think I'll be putting him inside a 'Raven from now on for that sweet 50" move, followed by a 3" disembark, then 12" move. Turn 2 he can be anywhere I want him within 65". Kua
Only thing I’m annoyed by is that he became the chapter master. (I was told it happened during some Tau campaign, not the 8th ed’s fault.) Kua
Because he was the only known character? Isn’t a hidden/secret chapter master much more fitting and interesting than just another straightforward close combat hero? Nusquam
I'm salty that they created Severax just to get Worf-killed by Shadowsun. A whole chapter master created just to die. But at least Shrike has the CM rule for rerolls. Makes him good no matter where he is. Even shooty termis landing next to him get a buff. GreyCrow
That's The very cool thing about their new approach to Captains and CMs ! They're not only good, but they actually have some form of command aura around them. And rerolls are super powerful in this edition ! GW named a few dudes along the way, unless you mean a dude with stats? Kua
GW stats and mini, the codex army always being his 3rd company… Yes, FW did something with the 10th, sure, but but some BL name drops don’t count. Knight of the Raven
Corvin Severax wasn't created solely to be outsmarted at every turn by Shadowsun before dying to her. He also represented the old Raven Guard, the chapter that saw everyone else as tools to use and barely communicated their plans to their allies, when they didn't lie outright to them because they thought their vox channels were compromised. He died so that Kayvaan Shrike could lead the Raven Guard into a new incarnation of kindness, laughter, generosity, honesty, loyalty, and friendship. This is the campagin badge he commissioned for the rest of the war for the Damocles Gulf: It stuck a terror unmatched in their entire history in the hearts of the T'au. Claws and Effect
Well, Space Marines do get promoted from time to time. Shrike was Shadow Captain of the 3rd for a couple hundred years at least. Stands to reason that when a spot opened up he'd get it. Unless of course you think it fair for him to never be able to advance beyond Captain, regardless of what he does. Kua
Now with you saying that… He could have been conspiring with the Tau all along because he new that if the old CM stayed in place, the RG wouldn’t have welcomed the blessing of the upcoming (he knew about them from his Tau friends) Primaris Marines! Because there is no place for paranoia in the bright and glorious future when mankind takes back what is theirs, led by the Emperor’s most loyal son! Claws and Effect
Also, I doubt the Raven Guard way has changed now that Shrike is Chapter Master. If you've read Hunt for Voldorius, you know that Shrike is just as likely to withhold intel as any Raven Guard. He got intel and only shared part of it with the White Scars, keeping the part pertaining to his own mission to himself.
