jtod21
With the press release regarding the new codexes (link here), some interesting things have come up. Will the Black Templars get a new codex, or will we be squished into the Space Marines one? It seems that is likely that we will have our own codex again, but one can only hope. Any thoughts? Othniel's Blade
Not sure yet; between the lines of For you gamers out there, one very exciting addition are new rules representing specific sub-groups in many of the major factions; these range from old classics like the Space Marine Chapters or Chaos Space Marine Legions to returning rules for individual craftworlds, as well as previously unexplored groupings like Necron dynasties and Adeptus Mechanicus forge worlds. These will be included in each codex. and I just bought Index: Imperium 1 – what should I do with it?You’ll want to keep hold of your index. Codex: Space Marines doesn’t include rules for playing with Blood Angels, Dark Angels, Space Wolves, Deathwatch or Grey Knights armies, so you’ll still need Index: Imperium 1 to play with those. You’ll also need it for using some of the more unusual models such as the 30th Anniversary Space Marine, the Legion of the Damned and the Terminus Ultra Land Raider. it could go either way. Devil's Advocate - These are the factions listed on the front of the Imperium 1 codex and would not necessarily be inclusive of all unique chapters. I think because Black Templars will have a huge impact in the future of the Imperium that they might get their own codex to cover the lore. (Please!) Kontakt
If we aren't in the upcoming codex, they would have mentioned it in the faq. Marine players are just going to have to get used to sharing with the templars. Try not to make them look too dull by comparison Honda and bolvar 2 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/336200-the-new-codexes/#findComment-4809218 Share on other sites
Gerhard
It would really surprise me if we'd be getting a separate Codex. I find it more likely we'll either be in CSM or not get a codex at all, rather then getting a separate codex. Doesn't mean I won't be happy and surprised if we do get a codex though... Kastellan Kong
We're probably never getting our own codex again, unless it's in a campaign supplement... if they'll still make those (I hope not, supplements ruined 7th ed). Ciler
Personaly i'm QUITE happy to get the chapter trait/relics/warlord trait treatment. I'm very annoyed though that my purchase of the index is already more or less redundant. T-Rock
I don't think we'll get a codex. We are unique in our tactics, aesthetic, and chapter organization, but sans sword brothers and neophytes I just don't think we have enough unit variety to necessitate a separate entry. That said, I don't think that's cause for despair. What will happen, I believe, is each chapter will get far more focus, diversity, and flavor within the upcoming book. The indexes have already made LRC, crusaders, and our HQs more viable than ever, allowing us the tools to play BT the way they're meant to be played. If our chapter tactics are solid, and HQs remain strong, I feel like our hunt for a codex is kind of a red herring, distracting us from the potential boons GW has already provided us with to help BT retain its flavor. I could be totally off on both points, but I remain optimistic for now. Vel'Cona
Speaking as someone that has played on both the Codex and non-Compliant Astartes faction sides, you're generally better off being directly in the SM codex than independent. Example: Deathwatch. Honda 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/336200-the-new-codexes/#findComment-4809276 Share on other sites

I could be totally off on both points, but I remain optimistic for now. This is also my feeling really. The only thing I am sortoff worried about is that the current setup of generalization also adds a bit towards balancing. Codexes offer cool variety but also offer far more variables for imbalance in the game. I'd be dissapointed if the current balancing that 8th has brought as it stands now will be lost due to the codexes again. bolvar
I don't think we'll get a separate codex, or we'd be on the same list of dark angels, blood angels and such. But that's not a bad thing. It's not that we're stuck with the lesser chapters, it's that the lesser chapters are trapped with us. Looking on the bright side, we'll never be forgotten in things like FW supplements and such Honda 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/336200-the-new-codexes/#findComment-4809309 Share on other sites
Schlitzaf
Agreed. Through I have personally decided if the Codexes break the game to revert back to the Indexes. Also furthermore in regards to BT and our own Codex/additional rules. I like others are fine with not getting our own Codex. If anything what I would want is getting a Biker/Crusader Unit. Scout Bikers already exist after all. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/336200-the-new-codexes/#findComment-4809409 Share on other sites
TheOneTrueZon
I don't think we're getting our own Codex now, but if GW moves away from the whole "edition" thing and sticks with just updating army rules within the structure set up by 8th with tweaks as it evolves, a la AoS - I think eventually all the listed chapters in the C:SM will get broken out into their own codex, be it that Templars are grouped in with IF & CF, or standalone. It would make it easier for GW to update rules for specific armes without having to re-release the entire C:SM when an army within it gets an overhaul or major update. TheOneTrueZon
Overall I think this line from the site has the most potential that would lead me in a positive direction from the warhammer-community site: Which factions are getting a codex??Every major faction will be getting a codex. As well as classic and well-known armies, you can expect to see factions that have never had their own codex before – starting with the Death Guard, available later in the year. .... IMO they're even saying in plain language that they're breaking out other factions as well, so ya never know - time will tell. jtod21 and Brother Talarian 2 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/336200-the-new-codexes/#findComment-4809768 Share on other sites

Brother Talarian
What do you brothers believe the chapter tactics will be? If a crusader dies in the shooting phase, move that unit D6" ( to the closest enemy?) If a crusader dies in close combat you may make an additional attack (with models in the unit, within 3", with that model?) Just wish-listing... am curious to see what the end of the month brings! As TOTZ mentions, there could be a chance of a BT codex... Castellan Doren
And to think I was feeling bad for not getting a copy of index 1. I would like to see our own codex again. I would likely have bought it anyway if I had known, but at least it would have been my decision. I always feel like that sort of practice amounts to money grabbing. Back before these 'Sanguinary Guard' and 'Nephilim' and 'Darkshroud' units, and back when everyone knew that putting a filthy witch in a sacred Dreadnought was a bad idea, the Blood Angels were 'Codex with a few unique units and fluff', the Dark Angels were 'Codex with a few unique units and fluff', and the Black Templars were pretty much the same - 'Codex with a few unique units and fluff'. Those Chapters got unit variety when they got updated codexes; if we ever got our own, it would be the same.
