About 6 months ago my best friend and gaming buddy took his own life. He had been collecting Salamanders because he appreciated their self reliance and protective demeanor. His family gave his Salamanders army to my 9 year old son who he loved like his own nephew and who has been wanting to play 40k with the grown ups since he was 4 years old.

The army hasn't been well kept, but my wife and I want to fix up the army for our son. Also it means a lot to our 40k group to keep it on the table since he should still be here with us. We had big gaming events every year and we plan on making sure it's on the table even in his absence.

We bought the new SM codex and we got the Salamanders out of storage and gave it a try. After 17 years of playing Chaos, I have no idea what to do with loyalist marines. The models look similar but thy do not play the same way.

I'm looking for advice from Salamanders veterans. Any advice. My friend said he intended his army to be a battlforce from the 3rd company. He left us a Redeemer, Thunder Hammer Terminators, 2 tac squads, a drop pod, Vulcan, sniper scouts, a landspeeder storm, sternguard with combi-meltas and a Terminator Chaplain.

Thanks in advance.

I do not know all the details about Salamanders, but if you check page 48 of the Codex you will find their organizational structure. The 3rd Company are called the Pyroclasts. You will definitely need a Captain, who is the Master of Arsenal, 1-2 Lieutenant(s), a Chaplain and an Apothecary. Battleline Squads will be your tacticals. Flamer and Melta weaponry are preferred. Guilliman has altered the Codex, so that a Tactical Squad in a Company can also be 5man, so MM or HF Razorbacks are fair game, as well as the Rhino.

Close Support you would probably be looking at the Thunderhammer Termiantors, Flamer Aggressors and Melta Assault Centurions. Fire Support is tricky, but Devastators seem like fair game, not sure how Salamanders are feeling about Predators. Dreadnoughts would want Melta and Flame weaponry. Any version will probably do. You also definitely want a Land Raider Redeemer.

The Company also includes Scouts, so you are good to go on those. Though Scouts and Sternguard are from the 10th and 1st Company respectively and act as borrowed auxiliary force to the Company. Same goes for Terminators, actually. Keep that in mind when doing the squad numbers.

But yeah, this is just a bunch of logical conclusions. I am by no means an expert on Salamanders. Maybe someone else can offer more complete info.

I've no good advice, all told, but I'm in a muddle myself as to how to organise my Salamanders henceforth, and this sounds such a poignant, fitting, and sadly heartwarming project that I'll endeavour to keep it in mind if/when I discover useful information!

You have enough for a Battalion detachment already.

HQ

Vulkan He'stan

Terminator Chaplain

TROOPS

2 Tactical Squads

Scout squad

ELITES

Sternguard

Hammernators

HEAVY SUPPORT

Land Raider Redeemer

Put the Land Speeder Storm on a shelf. Salamanders rarely use skimmer vehicles, and they're pricy in-game now. You're better off using Concealed Positions to place the Scouts.

Sorry for your loss. Hopefully I helped keep your friend's army in the fight.
