Looking sick!

Those Indomitus marines are lovely... and weirdly more easily kit bashed than some of the recent multipart kits!

Hey mate, long time no see! Hope you're keeping well, we should get a game someday if you're still around G-town!

After another ridiculous hiatus, I've finally painted another space marine. The local store has started a crusade campaign which is exactly what I need to motivate me to get stuff painted. Turns out 9th ed is pretty fun too, which is cool. First time I've actually played 40k for realsies since 4th ed...

Anyway, if I'm playing then I better paint some dudes. My list is a grab bag of starter box models mostly, but I'm working to convert stuff and keep it interesting. I've also ordered a few new kits which should allow me to expand the force slowly...

Being forced to build an actual army list, and playing in crusade, has given me reason to revisit my Corsair's background and design too, and I might play around with a few changes to how I do their markings, etc... We shall see.

Anyway, allow me to introduce Sergeant Harrex, 8th Assault Company, 4th Squad, veteran of the Defence of Nova Castellum, honour sworn battle brother to Captain Tancrede of the Howling Griffons, currently seconded to Strike Force Parthian.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate the feedback!

I got another Crusade game in last weekend, the highlight of which was a sole surviving bladeguard killing a half health Leman Russ after surviving a full barrage of punisher cannon overwatch. I might have to do something special for him...

I finished another three Intercessors off, just in time for me to expand Tactical Squad Dj'Urren to ten men, so now it's only half done *sigh* So far this squad has been one of my best performers, and I've upgraded them with Marksman Honours, which I've depicted on the models.

I've also tried a new approach to markings, using company colour and heraldry on the right kneepad, and squad markings on the right. When I first started these guys years ago I was experimenting with a lot of transfers, but in the time since I have gotten more confident with my free hand, so I'm also using more freehand markings rather than relying on transfers. The crossed mace/key on Dj'Urren may be one of my favourite little bits of painting I have done in a long time.

Tactical Squad Dj'Urren, 4th company, 3rd squad, currently seconded to Strikeforce Parthian in the course of the Ophidian Crusade. Cassem Dj'urren drills his men relentlessly in conducting sweeping advances under a hail of bolter fire. The squad members bear numerous Marksman Honours recognising this expertise, in addition to a range of campaign insignia. Dj'Urren himself displays the crossed mace and key symbolising his part in the suppression of the Cult of St Servicius as a member of Cardinal Orgelio's crusade command. While the Corsair's have not enjoyed close ties to the Ecclesiarchy, Dj'Urren was cited for commendation by the Cardinal for the ruthless efficiency with which he oversaw the urban extermination efforts against the cult.

Brother Torren has been censured by the chapter armourers repeatedly for his practice of inscribing kill tallies onto his personal bolt rifle, Carniphage. Brotther Torren insists the practice pleases the weapon's fierce spirit, and so long as he continues his exemplary record of kills, Dj'Urren sees no reason to take further action. Torren displays Marksman Honours as well as the badge of the Defence of the Varentian Gate, during which he was left as the sole survivor of his then-squad.

Brother Saerel is the newest member of Squad Dj'Urren, recently promoted from his time in the scout company, in which he demonstrated a mastery of stealth warfare and the assassination of key enemy personnel. His superiors anticipate a rapid promotion to the fire support role of Eliminator, but first he must prove his mettle under the veteran eye of Dj'Urren.

Thanks for reading!

Thanks guys! Between the kind words and the semi-regular games I'm getting in currently, I'm not sure I've ever been so motivated haha.

Not much to show for the last week, I spent a fair bit of it away from home. But I have started mocking up the first of my bladeguard. I've been using the Indomitus models as stand ins, but I really feel the Corsairs would have something a bit less baroque...

The idea for these actually started right back when I began the army years ago, back then I planned to run them as vanguard vets, but the new assault intercessors and the addition of bladeguard gave me a chance to build some really cool 'boarding assault' veterans.

Ok, so I opted for another Mechanicus related decal to detail the fist, since I see this guy, a grizzled vet with extensive bionics, as probably being fairly close to the techmarines of the chapter. However, after some feedback elsewhere I'm wondering if the model isn't a little too busy? Perhaps leaving the fist plain black would look better? Another suggestion I got, which I actually quite like, would be to paint the fist the same grey as the weapon casings, and use this colour for all weapons, melee or ranged. Thoughts?

Regardless, here is the (at least for now) finished Lieutenant.

Brother Ortus Rhane, 4th Company Lieutenant. One of the few remaining members of the Corsairs' former 1st Company, Ortus has served with distinction for almost four centuries, rising through the ranks to become a 9th Company devastator sergeant before being promoted to the honoured 1st Company as sergeant of 6th Squad. In the wake of the fall of Cadia and the opening of the Great Rift, Ortus' experience and leadership has been important in shaping the future of the rebuilding chapter, and his brothers fully expect him to be given command of 9th Company when it is eventually reformed.

As befits a veteran of so many years, Brother Ortus bears many honours and campaign badges, as well as the scars of uncounted other battles. Extensive injuries suffered during the defense of the forge world Omnichalos III necessitated major bionics and the fabrication of a customised breastplate and gorget by the grateful adepts of Omnichalos, whose emblem Ortus bears to this day. He also bears the Indomitus badge with honours and the Celestra campaign badge. His right greave carries the most significant honour, showing his participation in the Corsairs' pilgrim-embassy to Terra that resulted in their new pact with Navis-Nobilite House Ersine. This marks Ortus as one of only two dozen Corsairs to have set foot on Terra in the last two thousand years.

Love the lieutenant with the power fist.  Colour scheme and painting look crisp and the lore is really well thought out. Great that you stayed with the name and image for the chapter.
