So I'm making a full primaris army atm and I remember in the mini 'dex that comes with dark imperium it shows that the colours of the pauldron trim denote battleline, close support and fire support. I want to include these colour markings in my force but I can't for the life of me remember what they are (and I can't find my mini 'dex to check)

If someone has a copy of the book would they please be able to either attach a picture of the page or simply tell me what colours they are? I can't find it online or in the new SM codex.

Thanks in advance for any help!

(I hope this is in the right place, I'm sorry if not!)

Greeting ChaoSam,

I'm working on a Primaris army myself and have had a similar question. Upon further reading this is what I found.

A lot of codex complaint companies use the Trim on the right shoulder to denote the company. However the symbol on the right shoulder indicates if he's battle line, close support, or fire support.

Here is what a current company looks like after the Codex revisions by Guilliman

Chapter

1st Veteran Company

2nd Battle Company

3rd Battle Company

4th Battle Company

5th Battle Company

6th Reserve Company -Battle Line

7th Reserve Company -Battle Line

8th Reserve Company -close support

9th Reserve Company -fire support

10th Scout Company

The veteran company has all your veteran units in it and get shuffled around the other battle companies as needed to assist,

The battle company is made up of 6-12 Battle line units, 2-4 close fire support units, and 2-4 fire support units. These companies are the primary marine fighting force. They make up the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th companies

Companies 6-9 have units of the type listed who are greener and still learning. They typically get sent to battle companies 2-5 as need to reinforce or resupply

Company 10 is scouts and basically neophytes who just got in and are learning the ropes.

Battle line units that are primaris are:

Intercessors, and they are represented by an up arrow

Primaris units that fall under fire support are:

Hellblasters

Aggressors

They are represented by a chevron

Close support that are primaris are

Reivers

Inceptors

They are represented by the 4 outward pointing crossed arrows.

Non primaris marines all get shuffled into these categories as well but these are just the primaris designations

Of course while this is the 'usual' it's not universal. Sure Space Wolves, Blood Angels, and Dark Angels do their own scheme but even amongst the complaint ones there are variations, Black Templars, Salamanders, and White Scars are all examples of chapters that have unique company, squad, and type based markings.

In summary for most:

Right side shoulder trim = Chapter's specific company

Inside Marking denotes squad type.

Up arrow ~ Battle Line

Crossed Arrows ~ Close support

Chevron ~ Fire support

It's actually dependent on the chapter.

Ultramarines: same as always, pauldron trim = Company color, battle role = white symbol

White Scars: leg lightning bolts = Company number, battle role = red symbol

Imperial Fists: pauldron trim = Company color, battle role = black symbol for battle-line, no other roles shown

Black Templars: black trim, white pauldron = battle-line / red trim, black pauldron = veteran / red trim, white pauldron = close support

Salamanders: Various shoulder colors = Company, fireball symbol = battle-line, no other roles shown

Raven Guard: left shoulder only, gold trim = battle-line, blue trim = close support, purple trim = fire support, red trim = veteran

Iron Hands: black/dark gunmetal trim always, clan symbol on pauldron, white role symbol on left leg

You are probably describing the Raven Guard role colors.

Ive seen the picture that shows this. It's misinterpreted, it shows the different with different color trim but that's only to show of what it looks like for different companies. It still states Raven Gusrd follows codex complaint color's and does the conventions of the Ultramarinew at least for company colors.

Left shoulder pad

Company = trim

Type = decal ( Arrow, Chevron, Cross arrows, or Veteran mark)
