Playing various BA chapters? (newb alert)

Total newb...to the game and to Blood Angels.

Anyways...I'm 99% sure this is the army I will be picking up as my first as I jump into the 40K world for the first time. My question is...if one wants to roll with a chapter of Blood Angels other than the standard BA...like Flesh Tearers or Blood Ravens, ect....are there actual different rules for them or do they play like regular BA's just with a different and appropriate paint/modeling scheme? I haven't gotten too deep into things yet but at the moment I'm kinda fond of the Blood Ravens...but there's a lot of others that are appealing as well, at least from an aesthetics standpoint. Just trying to figure it all out and currently in the planning stages of what I need to order so I can get started and on the table. Open to suggestions for that as well.

Currently there are no special rules for playing flesh tearers or any other successor chapter. That may change once we get an updated codex for 8th edition in the future. The only exception is as a flesh tearers army you can use Gabriel Seth, the chapter master of the flesh tearers.

Also the blood ravens are not thought of as a successor chapter to blood angels. Their founding is, I believe, unknown. It is rumored that they were formed from the traitorous legion, the Thousand Sons. Nothing is stopping you from using whatever rules you want with your guys though.

The only difference so far is that successor Chapters can't take special characters with the Blood Angel keyword (wouldn't be much of a problem if your group accepts "counts-as" tho) and Blood Angels can't take Seth as he is the Flesh Tearers Chapter Master.

We don't know for sure yet whether we'll get rules for different successor chapters and I honestly think it's rather unlikely. Maybe Flesh Tearers will get their own rules like Black Templar and Crimson Fists for Imperial Fists but that's it.

And yeah Blood Ravens aren't Blood Angels successors. The origin of the Blood Ravens is mostly unknown. It was theorized they're a loyal splinter group of the Thousand Sons, however that got debunked iirc.

If you want a list of some Blood Angel Successor Chapters then I'll give you a rough overview (mostly copy&paste from the wikia):

Angels Encarmine
http://warhammer40k.wikia.com/wiki/Angels_Encarmine

Chapter Colours
The Angels Encarmine's Power Armour is painted red, with black trim and black backpack and a yellow Aquila symbol on the chest plate. Like all Successor Chapters of the Blood Angels, the Angels Encarmine maintain an elite force of Assault Marines known as the Sanguinary Guard and a Death Company to contain those Space Marines who succumb to the Red Thirst and the Black Rage. However the colours of their Death Company and Sanguinary Guard are an alabaster white, with black shoulder guard trim and backpack, but still bear blood-red saltires to symbolise the wounds of the the Blood Angels' Primarch Sanguinius after he was slain by the Warmaster Horus during the Horus Heresy.

Chapter Badge
The Angels Encarmine's Chapter badge is a single, red droplet of blood with a pair of ebon bat-like wings (displayed and elevated) protruding from its sides, centred on a field of red.

Angels Sanguine
http://warhammer40k.wikia.com/wiki/Angels_Sanguine
Chapter Colours
The Angels Sanguine's Power Armour is halved red and black with a yellow Imperialis symbol on the chest plate. The white squad specialty symbol -- (Tactical, Assault, Devastator or Veteran) -- is indicated on the right shoulder guard. A black Gothic numeral centered in the middle of the squad specialty symbol indicates squad number. The company number is indicated on the right knee guard in accordance with the heraldry used by the Blood Angels.

Chapter Badge
The Angels Sanguine's Chapter badge is a large white skull centred on a pair of red wings on a field of black.

Angels Vermillion
http://warhammer40k.wikia.com/wiki/Angels_Vermillion
Chapter Colours
The Chapter wears dark red Power Armour with a yellow Aquila or Imperialis emblem upon the chest plate. The Angels Vermillion were originally depicted as wearing carmine armour with a yellow chest Aquila. In the book How to Paint Space Marines, however, the Chapter is depicted in the scheme used by the Angels Encarmine: vermillion armour with a yellow chest eagle, black shoulder plate trim and backpack. The Codex: Blood Angels (5th Edition) restored their original armour colour scheme.

Chapter Badge
The Angels Vermillion's Chapter badge is a winged blood drop, with a small skull at the base of the drop, which is very similar to the badge of the Blood Angels.

Note: They follow some rituals to keep the Black Rage in check nobody is outside of their Chapter is supposed to know about which brings them at odds with the Blood Angel Chapter Master Dante. To a degree that he didn't even ask them to help defending Baal against Hive Fleet Leviathan.

Blood Drinkers
http://warhammer40k.wikia.com/wiki/Blood_Drinkers

Chapter Colours
The Blood Drinkers' Power Armour is carnelian red, with golden yellow trim on the shoulder pauldrons. The Imperialis or Aquila on the chest guard is also yellow. Like their progenitors, the Blood Angels, the Blood Drinkers also utilise the same strict heraldic system, which allows them to recognise what company and squad any given Battle-Brother belongs to at a glance. The advantages of such swift recognition amid the madness of battle are obvious. More than this, however, the Sons of Sanguinius revere their heraldry, and bear these markings as badges of pride.
Sanguinary Priests of the Blood Drinkers have the entire right side of their Power Armour painted white and have a golden yellow vertical stripe painted down the centre of the helm. Blood Drinkers Librarians have blue armour with the left shoulder plate painted red. The Chapter badge is located on the right poleyn (knee guard).

Company and Squad Markings
The Blood Drinkers also utilise the same heraldic symbols as the Blood Angels to show company and squad designations. Most unusual for a Blood Angels' Successor Chapter, instead of using the same heraldic symbols to represent squad specialty and number, they instead use the Codex-proscribed squad specialty symbols (Tactical, Devastator, Assault or Veteran) which are white and located on the right shoulder pauldron. A black Low Gothic numeral is stenciled in the centre of the squad specialty symbol, which designates squad number.

Chapter Badge
The Blood Drinkers' Chapter badge is an ebon chalice with a single, black droplet of blood falling into it, denoting their Chapter's name, the Blood Drinkers.

Flesh Tearers
http://warhammer40k.wikia.com/wiki/Flesh_Tearers

Chapter Colours
The Flesh Tearers have a two-tone colour scheme with crimson red covering the torso, arms and legs of their Power Armour, while the helm, shoulder pauldrons and backpack are jet black. Like the Blood Angels, the Flesh Tearers' company designation is displayed on the right shoulder plate in the form of a skull (for the Veteran 1st Company) or a differently-coloured drop of blood for the other companies. A Flesh Tearers' squad designation is determined by a Low Gothic numeral placed on the right knee plate. Librarians of the Chapter wear blue Power Armour with only the left shoulder plate painted black.

Heraldry of the Host
Like their predecessors, the Blood Angels, the Flesh Tearers adhere to a strict heraldic system, allowing them to recognise what company and squad any given Battle-Brother belongs to at a glance. The advantages of such swift recognition amid the madness of battle are obvious. More than this, however, the Sons of Sanguinius revere their heraldry, and bear these markings as badges of pride.

Squad Designation
The Flesh Tearers make use of symbols from the Codex Astartes for squad specialty designation. They favour a white symbol, indicating either Tactical, Assault, Devastator or Veteran, on black with contemporary markings over the top.

Squad Number
Unlike the Blood Angels, the Flesh Tearers use simple Low Gothic numerals to identify individual squads, commonly presented on the warriors' right knee guard.

Company Markings
Like the Blood Angels, the Flesh Tearers use variations of the blood drop to denote company, even though their four existing companies are often divided into ad-hoc battle groups:
  • 1st Company (Veteran): A white skull over black background on the right shoulder plate. On Terminator Armour (Tactical Dreadnought Armour), the left shoulder plate shows the First Company's specific heraldry, the right shoulder guard displays the Chapter badge in white.
  • 2nd Company (Battle): A single yellow blood drop.
  • 3rd Company (Battle): A single red blood drop.
  • 4th Company (Battle): A single green blood drop.
  • 5th Company (Battle): A single black blood drop.
  • 6th Company (Reserve Tactical): Twin yellow blood drops, side by side.
  • 7th Company (Reserve Tactical): Twin red blood drops, side by side.
  • 8th Company (Reserve Assault): Twin green blood drops, side by side.
  • 9th Company (Reserve Devastator): Twin black blood drops, side by side.
  • 10th Company (Scout Marines): The Flesh Tearers' Scout Company wears a black skull on the right shoulder plate, and the Chapter badge on the left.

Chapter Badge
The Flesh Tearers' Chapter badge is a circular, white saw blade with a crimson blood droplet at its center. The blade is centred on a field of black.

Sons of Sanguinius
http://warhammer40k.wikia.com/wiki/Sons_of_Sanguinius

Chapter Colours
The Sons of Sanguinius' Chapter primarily wears terracotta red Power Armour. The shoulder plates are black and the trim is yellow. The white squad specialty symbol -- Tactical, Assault, Devastator, or Veteran -- is indicated on the right shoulder guard. Company markings are superimposed over the top of these squad specialty markings. The Sons further identify their squad specialty by the colours of their helmets -- Tactical (White), Assault (Bone), Devastator (Light Blue) and Veteran (Black). Some Battle-Brothers have bright red mouth pieces which indicates that they are "blooded" Astartes -- Space Marines who have distinguished themselves in battle with extreme levels of brutality. The Aquila or Imperialis on the chest guard is yellow. All Sons of Sanguinius usually have at least one part of their battle plate coloured black. Most Battle-Brothers wear only black shoulder plates, but some of the more morose will wear black leg armour, knee pads or even colour the entirety of their battle plate black. These particular Astartes have seen through Sanguinius' eyes in their dreams, but can never see him in reality.

Heraldry of the Host
Like their predecessors, the Blood Angels, the Sons of Sanguinius adhere to a strict heraldic system, allowing them to recognise what company and squad any given battle-brother belongs to at a glance. The advantages of such swift recognition amid the madness of battle are obvious. More than this, however, the Sons of Sanguinius revere their heraldry, and bear these markings as badges of pride.

Helmet Designations
Instead of using the standard Codex-compliant symbols to show a unit's role or helmet colour to denote rank, the Sons of Sanguinius' helmets reflect the squad type to which they belong:
  • Assault Marine: Bone - Battle-Brother assigned to an Assault Squad
  • Tactical Marine: White - Battle-Brother of the standard Battle Companies
  • Devastator Marine: Light Blue - Battle-Brother assigned to a Heavy Support Squad
  • Veteran Marine: Black - 1st Company Veteran Battle-Brothers

Sons of Sanguinius' Librarians have blue armour with the left shoulder plate painted terracotta red. The Chapter badge is located on the right knee plate. Sons of Sanguinius' Sanguinary Priests have terracotta red armour trimmed in white, with the Chapter badge on their left shoulder plate.

Unlike other Chapters of the Adeptus Astartes, the Sons of Sanguinius wear the same squad markings of their Progenitors, which comprise a single symbol worn on the right knee plate of their Power Armour:

  • 1st Squad: A white skull on a black background
  • 2nd Squad: A white skull on a blue background
  • 3rd Squad: A red blood drop on a yellow background
  • 4th Squad: A red blood drop on a black background
  • 5th Squad: A white X on a black background
  • 6th Squad: A white X on a blue background
  • 7th Squad: A yellow lightning bolt on a black background
  • 8th Squad: A black lightning bolt on a yellow background
  • 9th Squad: A yellow angelic wing on a black background
  • 10th Squad: A black angelic wing on a yellow background

Company Markings
Like the Blood Angels, the Sons of Sanguinius use variations of the blood drop to denote company, even though their companies are often divided into ad-hoc battle groups:

  • 1st Company (Veteran): A bone coloured skull over black background on the right shoulder plate. On Terminator (Tactical Dreadnought) Armour, the left shoulder plate shows the First Company's specific heraldry, the right shoulder guard displays the Chapter badge in white.
  • 2nd Company (Battle): A single yellow blood drop.
  • 3rd Company (Battle): A single red blood drop.
  • 4th Company (Battle): A single green blood drop.
  • 5th Company (Battle): A single black blood drop.
  • 6th Company (Reserve Tactical): Twin yellow blood drops, side by side.
  • 7th Company (Reserve Tactical): Twin red blood drops, side by side.
  • 8th Company (Reserve Assault): Twin green blood drops, side by side.
  • 9th Company (Reserve Devastator): Twin black blood drops, side by side.
  • 10th Company (Scout Marines): The Sons of Sanguinius' Scout Company wears a black skull on the right shoulder plate, and the Chapter badge on the left.

Chapter Badge
The Sons of Sanguinius' Chapter badge is a golden chalice with a skeletal face carved into it and overflowing with blood. It also bears a pair of white, angelic wings. This is a symbol of Sanguinius himself. This imagery is centred on a field of black, or red when worn on the Power Armour of Sanguinary Priests.

Lamenters
http://warhammer40k.wikia.com/wiki/Lamenters

Chapter Colours
The Power Armour of the Lamenters was originally bright yellow except for a red helm stripe and the right shoulder plate, which was decorated with white and black checks, upon which rested the Chapter's badge. The most recent Chapter colours include a Mark VII Aquila Pattern Power Armour scheme that darkens the Lamenters' armour to a mustard yellow, and transfers the Chapter badge (and the checked pattern) to the left shoulder plate. The helm stripe was dropped completely.

Chapter Badge
The Lamenters' Chapter badge is a bleeding heart against the background of a black-and-white checkerboard pattern.

Note: Cursed foundation chapter. Kinda haunted by bad luck lol

Carmine Blades
http://warhammer40k.wikia.com/wiki/Carmine_Blades

Chapter Colours
The Carmine Blades' Power Armours are painted carnelian red with bone white helmet and trim on the autoreactive shoulder guards.
The Carmine Blades' company markings differ from those outlined by the Codex Astartes in utilising symbols on the right shoulder plate instead of different colored trim and numbers. Only in special cases does the Chapter badge not appear on the left shoulder plate. The following is a list of how each Company represents itself:
  • 1st Company (Veteran): A white skull over red background on the right shoulder plate. On Terminator Armour, the left shoulder plate shows the First Company's specific heraldry, the right shoulder guard displays the Chapter badge in black (yellow for Sergeants).
  • 2nd Company (Battle): A single yellow blood drop.
  • 3rd Company (Battle): A single white blood drop.
  • 4th Company (Battle): A single green blood drop.
  • 5th Company (Battle): A single black blood drop.
  • 6th Company (Reserve Tactical): Twin yellow blood drops, side by side.
  • 7th Company (Reserve Tactical): Twin white blood drops, side by side.
  • 8th Company (Reserve Assault): Twin green blood drops, side by side.
  • 9th Company (Reserve Devastator): Twin black blood drops, side by side.
  • 10th Company (Scout Marines): The Blood Angels' Scout Company wears a black skull on the right shoulder plate, and the Chapter badge on the left.

Unlike other Chapters of the Adeptus Astartes, the Carmine Blades' squad markings comprise a single symbol worn on the right knee plate of their Power Armour:

  • 1st Squad: A white skull on a black background.
  • 2nd Squad: A white skull on a blue background.
  • 3rd Squad: A red blood drop on a yellow background.
  • 4th Squad: A red blood drop on a black background.
  • 5th Squad: A white X on a black background.
  • 6th Squad: A white X on a blue background.
  • 7th Squad: A yellow lightning bolt on a black background.
  • 8th Squad: A black lightning bolt on a yellow background.
  • 9th Squad: A yellow angelic wing on a black background.
  • 10th Squad: A black angelic wing on a yellow background.

Chapter Badge
The Carmine Blades' Chapter badge is a large white skull, the top removed, which resembles a Blood Chalice. Three large drops of blood are centred above the skull. Presented to the Blood Angels long ago by its Primarch, the first Blood Chalices were said to have contained the very essence of Sanguinius himself. Lost through war and catastrophe over the centuries, only a handful of Blood Chalices now remain and they are only entrusted to the most faithful and deserving members of the Chapter. The use of such a potent symbol is appropriate, and more than likely represents that the Carmine Blades also contain the very essence of their fallen Primarch.

Knights of Blood
http://warhammer40k.wikia.com/wiki/Knights_of_Blood

Chapter Colours
The Knights of Blood have a two-tone colour scheme with dark red covering the helmet, shoulder pauldrons, Aquila, and part of the backpack, whilst their torso, arms, legs and backpack exhausts are silver in colour. Like the Blood Angels, the Knights of Blood's company designation is displayed on the right shoulder plate in the form of a skull (for the Veteran 1st Company) or a different-coloured blood drop for their other companies. A Knights of Blood's squad designation is determined by symbols commonly used by the Blood Angels and their Successor Chapters and placed on the right knee plate.

Chapter Badge
The Knights of Blood's Chapter badge is a white shield with a red blood drop at its center, with two crossed black swords behind it.

Knights_of_Blood_Marine.jpg

Note: Suffer from heavily degenerated gene seed where they barely have controle over the Red Thirst and thus got declared Renegade eventually. Instead of turning to chaos and becoming traitor marines they decided to stay loyal to the Emperor tho.

There are more and I probably forgot some more important ones still but there you go. Of course it's always an option to create your own Successor Chapter (especially now that the Blood Angels and Successor Chapter got almost wiped out defending Baal and with the arrival of Primaris Marines), however then you will never have the chance of reading about 'your' chapter in official fluff of course (and the benefit of official fluff not screwing with 'your' chapter. It's a tradeoff).
