Additionally, it is worth noting that the advantage of being within 6" isn't as great as it was in previous editions, meaning that you shouldn't feel you have to get your meltas that close for them to be useful.  In other words, its nice to get them within 6", but they are still almost as good outside of that.

Thanks for the replies. Alright, trying to make this work, so bear with me. Would it make sense at all to use Hellhounds to block LOS to the Veterans for a big push the turn after they enter play? I understand conventional wisdom says to use troops to screen tanks and not the other way around.

Only the hellhound version (so, the one with the turret flame cannon) blows up on a 4+ - the other two versions (devil dog and banewolf) blow up as normal.  So, if you intend to keep your troops close behind, either a banewolf or a devil dog might work for you.
