Evening all,

So I've finally bitten the bullet and decided to begin an army different to Space Marines. However, not being a filthy xenos lover or a dodgy heretic, I've decided to turn my attention to the sledgehammer of the Imperium, the Astra Militarium...or the Imperial Guard, as should be known.

Being an adult with income has finally meant I can live my dream of having an army of Vostroyans. So I've stockpiled the figures, and slowly started to batch paint the infantry...it's taking a while. I'm not going to lie.

First four are done:

Vostroyans group 1

Nice to see you starting your WIP up, I like the scheme you have good colours on them so they're going to look great as an army on the table top :) Have you decided on what tank scheme you'll go with, the classic Vostroyan scheme or something a bit different?

@WarriorFish - I’m not yet sure as to whether I’m going to go with the traditional scheme. In my mind, I was toying with painting any chimeras with lots of banners and devotional imagery, kinda making them a devotional shrine for the simple minded tommies, to steal a phrase. But the tanks used for war will probably go in a Vostroyan scheme.

@Kage - thank you! That’s really helpful.

  • 2 weeks later...

So I need some advice.

I’m currently working my way through five infantry squads and a command squad. It’s taking forever, but as I’m working through I’m beginning to dream about where to go next. For a Vostroyan regiment, what would you grunts recommend? Tanks? More infantry?

Their Doctrine works well with Leman Russ Punishers if you fancy a change from infantry.

Otherwise, some HWTs (HB and/or Mortars perhaps), and some SWS would be worth a look (plasmagun SWT work well with the Doctrine too). Or a few Tempestus squads converted to suit the Vostroyan theme maybe?

I suppose a better question might be: what do you fancy painting next?

See, you post things like that and I can already tell that you're in the right place. Welcome to His guard.

It can take a while to work through a lot of troopers, so keeping your painting queue is essential to make sure you don't burn out on them :) Swap to something different. Maybe a single fancy character model, or a tank (I like artillery, and it would suit Vostroyans too) or maybe another army completely - something to break it up :tu: As Gilbear says that model you've been eyeing up for a while is a great way to keep painting, but there's nothing wrong with putting down the paint brush for a little bit instead either.

I'm not 100% sure. I'm 18 Vostroyans in, 21 left to go. Then the Heavy Bolter teams for each of the five squads, then the command squad...as WarriorFish says, I need to throw something into the mix to break it up. I have a ratling squad that's been sitting idle waiting for some kind of attention.

Every day is a holiday in the Guard, that's what the recruiting officer told me.

Artillery is a good idea. Initially, my plan was to build up 1000pts of infantry to use in Zone Mortalis games, then do 1000pts of tanks. But I could do with a break of painting the rank and file. Maybe some sentinels? They can be used in ZM games (dreadnought sized), and I like the idea of squads of Vostroyans following behind them...

In the meantime.

First, a bit of light reading, both to get into the Christmas Spirit, and to get into the mindset of the honest Vostroyan

I've also unearthed these. Gained in a trade about 5 years ago, they've sat unloved apart from the one, as I've been unsure as to what they are. However, recent researchsays that they're rogue-trader era commisars. I'm not sure if I'll paint them up as commisars or run them as some kind of "vet" squad. If memory serves, you used to be able to run a commissar cadet squad...I'll need to strip the one painted model, and find suitable replacement arms for those without 'em.

I don't know why, but as the vostroyans are all metal, and the ratlings I've got are metal, and these commissars are metal...I'm really tempted to try to make sure that all my infantry models are metal.

I suspect that's a stupid idea that I'll come to regret.

You could also run them as Storm Troopers (i.e., Scions). Since they don't have arms, it would be easy to give them some backpacks and some different-looking lasguns and/or special weapons. :smile.:

You may regret it, but all my Guard armies are pretty much entirely metal. I give the plastic heavy weapons a pass, but use metal crew. I do like the heft of metal, even if it's not the most practical for transport. :tongue.:

Not too dissuade you from going all metal, because that's totally cool, but it looks like Anvil Industry have some good 3rd party heads coming down the pipe pretty soon.

Just in case you did come to regret it :)

EDIT: Sorry, rude of me. What you've got so far looks ace! :tu:

Good idea about running them as Scions. It'd certainly be colourful - a commissar cadet squad, final stage of training before being sent out to serve other regiments as full blown commissars in their own right. I just need to source some appropriate arms and weapons to convert up those who need it (some of the models are 'armless, pun intended.)

Really? That's awesome news for when I do tank crews; some suitably vostroyan heads would be awesome. Means I wouldn't have to consider buying one more squad and hacking the heads off... And thank you!

Right, so no pictures yet, but I'm pleased to report that last night I finished and based the first 39 models of the Vostroyan infantry. Next on the painting table is 1 sergeant (he got missed in the initial batch paint) and five heavy bolter teams. Once they're done, I'll have 5 squads of Vostroyans ready to take to the battlefield.
