Iron Hands Fanatic Posted December 25, 2017 Share Posted December 25, 2017 (edited) So um, ah.... forgeworld named a product bundle after my homebrew Xth Legion Clan https://www.forgeworld.co.uk/en-GB/Clan-Brannsar-2017 It could just be someone at FW googling a Clan name and mine booping up miss-attributed as canon, but if not - holy I'm incredibly flattered. Whether this means someone's just seen a fraction of my stuff and thought it was cool, or there's a FW staff member who frequents the forum, this is amazing in it's own small way. I know it in no way makes Brannsar canon, but this is such a cool thing to happen. People have always said that there are folks at FW who keep an eye on my stuff, but the closest thing to that is the possibility that my idea for circuitry-design tattoos for Iron Hands Legionaries influenced the artwork of Autek Mor, which is entirely speculation Congrats! I am glad to see it has made your day my friend. Ha, I wouldn't quite put it there, but it was a pretty cool thing to happen, and totally unexpected. I guess FW might be in line for a burn of their own. EDIT: Could be someone from FW had seen OP's work, and then forgotten about it. This might be purely a coincidence, of course, but even if it is, congratulations. I would caution against listening to the nonsense about owning any rights to the name or the ludicrous thought that you might be owed compensation. Your work is derivative of GW's original work; and as has been pointed out, it's not like the name was made up. Congrats again! At least in the US (don't know much about international IP law, but I imagine it's largely the same in the broad strokes) a name on its own is not protected by IP law, unless it is used as a trademark to denote particular products or services of an individual or group, and he's not used it as a trademark so far as I know of, As far as I can see, the Clan Brannsar bundle bears no direct relation to IHF's masterfully creative inventions, but merely shares a name to reference products which FW and GW own the rights to in their entirety. I don't believe he has legal rights to the name, but a trademark lawyer could probably analyze such a thing more closely. I almost forgot, though! Congratulations IHF! Awesome to see that FW still keeps an eye on the community, or seems to at least. Like I said in my post, the only time a name can be protected under law is when it is used as a trademark, and they do not borrow from the particular ideas expressed in IHF's work and design either, merely using it in reference to their own products priorly established. That does not infringe on the copyright of his work. There's nothing in that Wikipedia article you linked to support your claim, either, so I'm honestly not sure why you linked it. It started to falter a bit so I took it to my local group and we ran with it and finished it ourselves. A couple of years later the Imperial Knight with House Cadmus as the poster boys is released. We were delighted! I own a nice sizeable Cadmus force now cause how couldn't it? I hope it was thanks to that initial organiser that someone at GW spotted the Cadmus name, such a cool link.
