Ave Fraters,

Been a long time, haven't posted properly since.. 8th dropped? Before hand? Either way.

Starting to get back into the hobby proper after dabbling in other games. Having sat on the Dark Imperium box for a bit and added other bits and pieces, time to get them all painted and actually maybe get things sorted in the new year. Maybe.

Doubtful.

I'd sat deliberating which chapter I was going to do for a long, long time, flipping between Iron Snakes, Astral Knights and the Iron Knights. Eventually, after reading over the fluff available on Lexicanum and the 40k Wikia, I took to the sons of Dorn, the Iron Knights and began planning.

So, for a start, we have my build in progress Captain:

This guy is made up of parts from a few kits, including a couple of arms from the Intercessor kit, a Grey Knight force sword and tilt shield, the Blood Angel Lieutenant, a Sternguard head and shoulder pads and a (thoroughly aggravating to sculpt) Dark Angel cloak. Work still to be done includes gap filling, filing down the wings on the cloak and general tidying up (I see mold lines!)

So. Here we go. Place your bets now for how long this plog actually lasts.

Cheers guys.

Thanks for the comments and encouragement people,

After a New Year where I drank too much (and am now subsequently suffering for it) - a quick update on things

First, the updated Captain:

I was very kindly given some Imperial aquila brass etching by a friend to add some detail to the cape - which has worked quite nicely. Some last tidying up to do before pinning and on to painting.

Also a new work in progress for something else:

I'll probably build this guy whilst I paint the Captain and the first squad in the new, quicker colour scheme (no Nuln Oil Wash - straight into Nuln Oil Gloss). There's a squad already done but I'm going to strip them back and redo them too since I'm not too happy with how they turned out in the long run.

Cheers for now.

Must say I'm not totally convinced about the aquilas, not just because they're imperial :P, but because the wings aren't parallel to the cape edges and, while the Dark Angels wings were... well, too "dark angely", I think simply removing them would have looked better. Still it is an awesome conversion, and can't wait to see how the second character turns out!

I feel similarly to Traitor and Blindhamster, though I do like the idea itself. Perhaps it's possible to square the wings more with the edges of the cape, either with greenstuff or by some careful cutting/shaving?

Hello peoples,

Another short update - I believe the Captain is in a state where he can be painted:

Took the advice mentioned above by Traitor and Blindhamster and removed the Aquilla, added the chest skull and the kneepad Captain skull. Head is currently waiting to be attached to something to make it easier to paint, though I am toying with the idea of a helmeted head.

Second, a bit of pose testing on the Techmarine, as well as some detail removal (the wreath on the leg mostly):

Not the clearest photo I know. Intention is to add some cog motif to the top of the axe, possibly on the flat of the blade to push the Mechanicus links that bit further, possibly add a cog trim to the bottom of the greaves. Maybe on the arm guards too, if I can find my thin plasticard sheet.

Now - I did say I would be building a squad to go with the Captain. I ordered a set of tactical icons from shape ways so I don't have to go trying to duplicate as many tactical icons as I need for my basic troops (Iron Knights have the battlefield role represented on both shoulder pads and the chapter icon on the tilt shield). I'll be building a squad of 5 to go in as a test bed for this new painting method, the sergeant I've been messing around testing painting on needs a Dettol bath however and they all need their shoulder pads worked on (photos tomorrow).

Until then,

Cheers

Another late reply, with unfortunate news.

I undercoated the captain and found, to my annoyance, the greenstuff was not smooth. Hours of smoothing later with blade and 2000 grit sandpaper - over zealous in my desire for a smooth finish - I'd destroyed the cloak. A tad gutted about that.

ANYWAY.

I at least got started on the first 5. Also.

The Captain will have his cloak.

Update tomorrow!

  • 2 weeks later...

So much for posting the next day. Anyway!

Having multiple attempts at making a cloak, I finally managed to get a cloak to work (after a couple scratch build attempts, which went.. poorly.) Waiting for it to dry so tomorrow I can give it the final sand down before fixing any of the damaged detail trim:

And after a mate of mine dropped off a shed load of unused Mechanicus parts from another friends Rat Dark Mechanicus army, I can continue work on the Techmarine:

So a bit late on that update, but progress is resuming. Waiting for the Captain to be paintable before continuing with the 5 man squad.

Update when progress is worthwhile.

Cheers!

By the Emperor look at that... time to slay some Heretics.

The Captain is in the stages of drying after a wash - the cloak has reached a point I can look at it and say 'good enough' however there is a couple points I can do with tidying up. Either way, I can progress with the painting, at last.
