Hi all!

I'll leave the original post below for posterity but I'm changing this into my project and gaming log.  Hopefully it will gain some traction with you guys and girls.  I have around 12000pts of Dark Angels painted, including a full 3rd battle company.  Over the first few pages you'll find my Deatwhing but I'll be adding group shots of the rest as well as WIP's in the coming weeks.  I'll also try and keep a rough summary of my battles going, although I'm absolutely hopeless at remembering to take photos.

Enjoy!

My 40k mates have set me a couple of related challenges as I have a rather large multi-army collection, the bulk of which is DA.  I already have a battle company painted up along with sizeable RW and DW forces.  Alas, there lurks a hidden mass of grey plastic within the depths of my own personal rock (the house) and it really needs working on at a greater pace.

The challenges:

  1. Complete a company of DW, RW and Scouts
  2. Play a 5k+ game at warhammer world taking "pure" DW

Obviously then I must focus in on the DW.  The smaller of my 3 DA forces already consists of (painted up):

Interrogator Chaplain in TDA

Librarian in TDA

Deathwing Champion

Deathwing Apothecary

Deathwing Ancient

Deathwing Squad - 5 x TH + SS, Cyclone

Deathwing Squad - Cyclone, Chainfist

Deathwing Squad - Assault Cannon, Chainfist

Land Raider

Land Raider Crusader

Dreadnought - Twin Lascannon, Missile Launcher

Mortis Contemptor Dread - 2 x Kheres Assault Cannons

Caestus Assault Ram

I have a number of units in limbo such a a squad of DW Knights as well as a Redeemer and Achilles to be assembled.I also have scope to add pretty much any combo of DW squad you can think of as well as purchase a few bits here and there without going too mad.  What I'd like is some help deciding where to start and where to take this.  Do I go for as many DW units as I can squeeze in? Belial and 10 Knights?  Loads of Dreads??

I'll consider any ideas no matter how wacky.

Most importantly this is going to be a fun project, including the battle itself, I don't think I will win but I'd like to give my opponent a run for their money, whatever they may take to oppose me.

I have a tonne of terminators yet to assemble/finish, something like 75 all in including already painted.  It just so happens that a 5 man lightning claw squad is one my "almost finished" units with some revisiting and one whole mini left.

Not much interest in this so far but I'm going to carry on.  80% sure I'll be facing Nids with a Hierophant bio-titan so this could get difficult!

I ran a couple of lists through in my head ranging from 35 to 60 Terminators, now I'm not sure which way to take it.  I need a hell of alot to deal with the titan but also potentially alot of big bugs.  What would you guys recommend?

A bone white Reaver Titan? :p

I wish!

I think I may have to saturate the battlefield with lascannons and cross my fingers. I can probably (if I convert a land raider) field 3 godhammer pattern as well as three dreads with some high powered flashlights as well. Doesn't seem enough though!

I guess I can back them up with a tonne of cyclones. Ironically the one blessing is he doesn't have a tonne of chaff in his nid army so I could perhaps get away with it.

Whilst normally that would be excellent advice, I'm definitely committed to this being a 100% Deathwing list, so I'd have to justify any unit taken as being part of the Deathwing. Predators sadly are not.

How do you think DW would fair in close combat with the beast?

Anything over an Imperial Knight (titan) doesn't really belong in a normal game, unless it's just for a narrative (apocalypse) game. If youre doing that, it's fun and games for his titan. If not, you should stick to the regular units.

It's cool to try, but the outcome would be surprising if you ended on top :)

If I had the choice I'd take at least five dreadnoughts at that points level just to spread out some lascannons, two land raider crusaders to move knights forward and a godhammer or two for more fire support.

Just wandering if your pure deathwing limit would prevent you from bringing a transport flyer such as a stormraven/stormeagle? Their not ravenwing or greenwing units there support units

Not that it's a powerful choice but it would just look cool to have say an elite stike team and supporting dread arrive in this way and at 5k you're not taking too many points out to have a cinematic entrance for some characters. Also I hope you get a squad or two in gravis or tartaros armors

Whatever you end up doing I'm jealous but want to see picture pls

Hoots

Well I'm not too sure about Storm Ravens as I plan to have mine green.  I do plan on a DW Spartan and already have a Caestus (painted bone) though.  I'm trialing 5 Knights, Belial, Ancient and a 10-man Assault Cannon (2) squad all deep striking in, along with some greenwing in games soon.  I plan on doing that to try and get a handle on the different units and then add-in units that help them synergise together for the big game.

Rest assured, pics will be posted :smile.:

If you can, if that 10-man squad is planned for to use DeathWing Assault, swap the two assault cannons for SB+Cyclones. I know it's more points, but those 4 missiles per model... They do make an impact :) And you get up to 8 SB shots as well.

I had a couple of games over the weekend and got to try out a small contingent of DW (1250pts limit):

Interrogator Chaplain

DW Ancient

DWK (5)

The first game they fluffed their charge against Cawl and got deleted by the rest of the ad mech army in the shooting phase, bar the ancient who went a couple of rounds with Cawl in combat before biting the bullet.

Second game they took on and won against a charging unit of 8 Purestrain 'Stealers + Patriarch and a Primus, losing all bar the Ancient (on 1 wound) and the Chappy (on 1 wound). Luckily this was the relic and took place right on top of the objective so got me the win. Man of the match by far was the Ancient who killed 4 or 5 'Stealers as well as the Patriarch. This was after successfully charging a cult squad on turn 3 deepstrike.

Overall it's important to know when to drop your DW. I got it wrong in game 1, although I doubt i'd have had much left on the board by turn 3 if i'd waited 2 turns. I had to drop them in on turn 3 in the second game, waiting as long as possible for his 'Stealer cult reserves, which paid off albeit due to being unable to fail a roll with the Ancient.

A small note if I may, Devastator squads with 4 Plasma Cannons have huge potential. Mine annihilated ad mech robots and a vanquisher in each game with 1 turn of shooting amongst other things!

Pic of the recently completed Knights to keep you interested:
