Black Guard - E TENEBRAE LUX Vow added

Hey all

With the new edition a couple of my buddies who still play started showing me all the new toys the marines got and they started playing again. After not playing since the beginning of 6th ed (roughly the last time I painted as well) I decided to pick up some Primaris marines and pick a new chapter.

My first army was Raven Guard back in 3rd. Since then there was 5 other Marine armies, 3 Guard armies,  2 Eldar Armies, an attempt at a Tau Army and one long. long, long term Sisters Army (a theme I see for most Sisters players).

After reading the fluff on the Black Guard, and seeing they finally got a color scheme I decided they fit my interests and went back to at least a descendant of my original force. Funnily enough, I found my original Raven Guard while cleaning out the attic and seeing if any paints where salvageable.

Anyway, no list as of yet. Just picking up one of each unit and painting it. Eventually it will end up as a playable force but for now, knocking the rust off the paint brushes.

Welcome back to the Ravenspire!

These are amazing   Please keep working on them.  All that is needed next is a tank.  Like a Vindicator

Anything but a Vindicator :ermm:   (never thought I'd say that).

Since you're dealing with black and white, it probably won't hinder you over much, but you should know after 10-ish years those paints you found in the attic aren't made any more.  GW has changed their paint since then, and a lot of them don't have modern matches.

@Firepower - the Black Guard are known for using artillery-like elements in the combat doctrine.  So, TFCs and Vindicators are reasonably expected, (like RG and Lightning Claws).  It's not a rule, of course, as the OP can do whatever he wants with them.  Yet, with his beautiful style (so far),I was humbly suggesting a vehicle that would be neat to see ^_^

Thanks everyone

@Race a tank is next up... provided my brick and mortar store I have a gift certificate to has what I want in stock. Might even pledge it to the Armored Might contest.

@Firepower Vindicators are on the short list, I have one from my Fist's army I'll use in some play tests to see how they fair in the new edition. Last time I used one Power of the Machine spirit was still a thing and was used to make sure even stunned, it fired. As for the paints its pretty much a total loss. Except for the Inks (why I have 3 un opened pots of Sky Blue Ink I have no idea.) and some unopened foundation paints. Oh. And Billious Green. Evidently it never dries out. Ever...

Most of the paints I have replaced now with the current standard as well as some P3 stuff. Coal black makes doing black highlights a lot easier I've found.

There will eventually be some Non-Primaris stuff now that GW has plastic Heresy armor. Now if only they would make a Demios Rhino in plastic.

Well, sadly in my experience (I have 2 and a half Vindies as my only boom-boom tanks) Vindicators may be the only unit in C:SM that was made worthless by 8th edition.

But I'm a style over rules guy myself, so the hell with that noise :laugh.:  Maybe you'll get lucky.

As an aside to what Race pointed out, Thunderfires actually aren't too bad (they have a very useful stratagem in particular).  May want to look at those, too.

Land Raider Achilles seems right up the Black Guard's alley.

It's a Land Raider with a thunderfire cannon mounted on it.

I didn't know anything about Black Guard, so I did a quick bit of google-fu.  Yeah, the Achilles seems absolutely perfect.  I approve of any army that thinks overkill is a fictional term, and Achilles encapsulates that nicely :tu:

Assuming you're willing to shell out the cash, points and deal with resin, that is...

Oh yeah, I had forgot the Achillies was a thing. Definitely going on the short list. I have no problems with it being resin, I've worked with FW stuff before.

However, in the mean time the local Brick and Mortar did have something I wanted...

Made some progress on the Repulsor. Got it primed and started blocking in colors on the sub assembly's that will be hard to get to.

Nothing is glued together yet. Dry fit testing for well.. fit and to try to map out a color scheme.

So between working on the Repulsor and waiting for some magnets to come in I decided to flesh out some more of the Reivers Squad. While I bought a 10 man box, I'm splitting it into 2 groups of 5 armed differently.

First group is Bolt Carbines and Grav Chutes. The test model was show earlier but here he is with the rest of his squad in progress:

ReiverSqd1

Since I upgraded my work lights I can see where I need to go back and touch up his highlights as well.

Also picked up a Primaris Captain model to go with the Primaris Apoth I had stared and put some work in on both of them while waiting for washes to dry. Digging thru old parts to find a better shoulder pad for the Captain as I dislike the eagle pad that he came with:

Looks great!

Good luck with the repulsor I magnetised mine. Putting it together was a pain the magnetising was up and down. I might suggest if u do the optional turrer stubber (the one which switches to a sight) you pin it rather than magnetising. It is possible but it would be way easier just to drill a pin through.

What kinda work lights do you use? Do they offer full colour spectrum?

I glued the sensor on as I dislike the look of that stubber sitting there. The other weapons (minus the pintle... the look of a Gatling cannon on it means auto choice for me) will be magnetized so I have options. Maybe a hang over from previous editions but I tend to keep my tanks as cheap as possible to allow for other things. The Repulsor itself is a huge chunk of points.

As for the work lights I use 2 metal clamp lights that cost all of 6 bucks a piece at home depot, with 60 watt daylight led bulbs. I have a swing arm light that has a 100 watt standard bulb in it if I need additional light. I have a left over Hue white spectrum bulb left over that I may switch into that just to play with the lighting spectrum some but so far this setup has been working fairly well.

  • 2 weeks later...

Small update. Was down for a week with a sinus infection that made it impossible to do much other than get out of bed.

Finishing up the turret for the Repulsor minus some weather that I will do once the rest of the tank is done. So far main gun is magnetized, I'm still waiting on the smaller magnets for the rest of the build and some green stuff to fill gaps on the main hull build.

First up is a Mock Up of the chassis just stuck together. Bonus door with the roughed in chapter symbol.

Repulsor Mock Up 1

Next up some close ups of the turret with the main gun swappable.  Just a single magnet on the back of each weapon with the pivot points trimmed down, and one on the back side of the mount point recess inside the turret.

Repulsor Turret 3

Repulsor Turret 2

Repulsor Turret 1

Hopefully will be able to get the main body fully assembled and greenstuffed up later this week then get the base colors blocked out.

As always thanks for looking.

The Repulsor is well-painted.

I’ll second that. I’m uber impressed with your ability to make black and white look this good. I especially have issues with white and you make even that fugly Repulsor look sharp.

Thanks everyone!

Small update, I finally got my magnets for the rest of the weapon swapping and obtained some fresh green stuff for the hull gaps. Just tacked together for now and mapping out the colors for the body:

I'm looking at hinging the doors but the way this kit is put together there isn't a lot of space to hide the wire inside the cabin and tbh the hinge points on the doors are about 1/3 of the size of rhino ones. I hate gluing the doors shut on transports (pure tanks are a little different) so looking at alternative solutions before I fully assemble it. In the mean time I am sub assembly painting to keep progress going.

Also looking for alternative placement for the auto launchers. I simply do not like the tacked on the turret look.

Thanks. This is actually a new method I'm trying for white. Base coat Mechanicus Standard, 1 thin coat of Administratum Grey, then 2 thin coats of Ulthan Grey. I will edge highlight with straight white once the model is done to keep it consistent.

The black is P3 Coal Black, highlighted with Eshin Grey, then Mechanicus grey. Given 2 thin thin coats of Nuln Oil shade to blend. Gives it a non-reflective black look that I quite like.

As always, thanks for looking!

Making some more progress. Got the Repulsor at least glued together. It may be apparent that I've had to assemble large GW kits before...

RepulsBuild

Also was digging thru and found my original Raven Guard army. Still looking for the Dreds/Tanks I had. Figured might as well share. I may end up stripping these and redoing them in between the Black Guard units

This is the army I started 3rd ed with. I played it thru 6th then dropped out early into 6th.  4th edition gave us the Chapter Approved Index Astartes articles with some special rules for the First Founding chapters. It allowed some interesting combos:

4th ED CMD SQD

This was the final iteration of the command squad for the army. Captain is the Master of Recruits, Company Champ sword, Command back pack and at the time, the only plastic Mk IV helm out:

6th ED CMD SQD

Rank and File, at least some of them. There's 2 scout squads and 2 demi-assault squads and some specialists left:

RankNFile

and finally, found the first mini I painted for the army, and here it is compared to the last. Quite a difference I think:

1stvslast

As always, thanks for looking!
