Micah's Dark Eldar

Greetings.

I'm looking to start a Dark Eldar army now that my chaos and Astra Militarum armies are getting larger. I haven't seen anyone play Dark Eldar at my local store, and I like their aesthetic, so I think they will be a good fit. They are also a completely different play style than I currently own.

Anyway, tk start I am currently winning a bid on the Gangs of Commoroagh box on eBay. I really like the Reavers. I'm not as fond of the Hellions.

Honestly as far as our dark eldar are as an index hellions are a bit better than reavers. Then again most of the DE range is useful, save for one or two depending on who you ask.

As far as starting them what are you looking for as a start? I mean beside the obvious reavers and hellions from GoC.

I like the wyches a lot, but I think a couple Start Collecting boxes will be my next purchases so I can get some troops and transports, and field a large Reaver squad. 12 Reavers with Painbringer for the extra toughness I think would be a good, durable (for Dark Eldar) annoyance.

Run the Kabalite Warriors as a 9 man Trueborn squad with 4 blasters and 2 Dark lances, and then add an Archon with a blaster.

For troops I think three very large Wych squads could be fun. Say 3x20 Wyches with agonizer on the Hekatrix and three sets of Hydra Gauntlets per squad.

That's a nice grab! The start collecting boxes are also a great way to start dark eldar, two boxes gives you a solid core of two kabalite units along with the transports they need.

One thing to keep in mind, it looks like the Dark Eldar codex is not far off. Personally my guess is mid February, so you may want to hold off on getting too much stuff just before the codex is out.

One other thing to consider, reavers are cool but currently they are wickedly overpriced. A list with a lot of reavers like you're planning just isn't going to be competitive. I'm really hoping the codex fixes that though and if that's the case you're in good shape.

4 Start Collecting boxes with what I currently have would give me 4 raiders, 3 with 5 kabalite warriors and 5 trueborn, 1 with 8 trueborn and 2 archons, all maxed out with as many dark lances and blasters as I can fit, plus 12 jetbikes with +1 toughness from drugs, and 10 Hellions with +1 attack from drugs. Its 6 placements at 1960 points, with 12 dark lances, and 19 blasters.

I think that will be a good start until the codex arrives. Once it arrives I can expand to other troop choices and elites, get a void raven eventually, and all that fun stuff.

Can't go wrong with spamming blasters and dark lances, but you'll really suffer against any horde armies. Not that DE are currently good at dealing with hordes anyway, but other units like venoms with splinter cannons would certainly really help out. As you said though it's a good start, and you'll without a doubt need raiders and kabalite warriors no matter what the codex changes, so you really can't go wrong with getting those units.

Well you mentioned you grabbed a few start collecting Dark Eldar which is just a fantastic choice all around. With the new codex being around the door I wouldn't reccomend too many more purchases but Ravagers are a safe bet for you to grab. IF you can't grab them conveniently I don't think it would be too hard to convert them as Ravagers are just Raiders with a couple extra Dark Lances / Dissie Cannons on the side. A Razorwing Jetfighter is another good grab that I can reccomend.

Mandrakes are a very efficient model right now and I personally find them an absolute joy to use, Incubi I find pretty fun although they are by no means a required part of our lists.

Overall I'd say that you have a very good core for your army, and experiment with what you have find out what you like and wait for the codex before making too many more big decisions for your army. I hope you have fun and welcome to the True Kin :)

I'm trying to settle on a color scheme. Oddly enough, I think white for the vehicles could be cool. I've never been happy with anything white I've painted. I'd try to paint them not in the Western style "wedding" white, but more in the South American native style of "death and mourning" white. Does that make any sense?

I've considered blue tones, but most of my Chaos list is Alpha Legion with a lot of blue and green. Oddly enough I feel like I can paint blue and green decently enough now. My Astra Militarum are camo green and gray, and I can do realistic drab camo pretty well, but that doesn't really fit with the dark eldar.

I don't really want to paint red, I've tried it a lot recently and haven't really been successful with the color palette I currently own, although I think it could look cool if done well enough.

I will not do bright green, I just finished trying to do a "sons of Medusa" theme and was very unsuccessful with that, to the point where I don't want anything to do with brighter green colors.

I figure if I do a white scheme on the vehicles I could color the infantry using colors related to the shading color on the vehicles to bring them all together some. So maybe white vehicles with purple, blue, or red shading and then purple, blue, or red infantry with white highlighting.

I think I understand what you mean about the whites, as I myself have been using bone white for some of the paneling of my vehicles and it's worked out very well.

Personally I prefer dark colors for dark eldar, but generally speaking I think dark eldar are a pretty forgiving army when it comes to your color scheme-you can basically do pretty much anything you want and it should work out just fine. One thing I have found is they do require edge highlights more than other armies, so maybe a dark blue, red or purple base with highlights could work well. Tying in the vehicles with one of those colors along with white should work just fine.

Yes

Edit: I get much better results with an airbrush so I try to use one whenever I can. I actually painted all my guardsmen with an airbrush. I tried blending this with a regular brush and it didn't look good, so I did this with my patriot 105. The patriot 105 can spray some of the Vallejo model colors without thinning them.

It's been a productive day.
