I started a Brazen Claws project not long ago. I already have a WIP thread in the Forge but I would like this thread to have fluff and tactics as well as painting in it.

First off, test model:

(Missing the freehand symbols, which will be done later, and varnishing, ditto.)

This afternoon I made my first vow for the ETL. All the models will be painted as Brazen Claws.

I, Chaplain Dosjetka, rise to the challenge of E TENEBRAE LUX on the side of the Adeptus Astartes, in the name of the Brazen Claws Chapter, and vow to complete...

  • one Chaplain (with bolt pistol);
  • one Techmarine (with power sword and boltgun);
  • one Techmarine (with power axe and bolt pistol);
  • one 5-man Scout Squad (with storm bolter, chainsword, and boltguns);
  • one 10-man Tactical Squad (with combi-melta, chainsword, meltabombs, meltagun, and multi-melta);
  • one Apothecary;
  • one Dreadnought (with multi-melta, DCCW, and heavy flamer);
  • one Venerable Dreadnought (with assault cannon, DCCW, and storm bolter);
  • one Venerable Dreadnought (with twin heavy bolter, DCCW, and storm bolter);
  • one 3-man Scout Bike Squad (with two Astartes grenade launchers);
  • one 5-man Devastator Squad (with storm bolter, chainsword, armorium cherub, missile launcher, and lascannon);
  • one Land Speeder Storm (with heavy flamer);
...of total value 1269 points on or before August 1st, 2018. Success will bring my Chapter eternal glory and failure will doom me to wear the Badge of the Oathbreaker until the year-end.

From top left, going clockwise: Tactical Squad; Devastator Squad; Scout Bike Squad; the Dreadnought and two Venerable Dreadnoughts; the Techmarines, Chaplain, and Apothecary; the Scout Squad; and the Land Speeder Storm.

Hopefully this will be the first of many vows as I have over 4000 points of unpainted Space Marine stuff at the moment... :sweat:

Fluff-wise, most of this army will be "sourced" from the 2nd Company, with some auxiliary forces from various other Companies. I didn't really like the idea of using the chest eagle to show company colours, as is mentioned in the Chapter's official fluff, so I've gone with coloured shoulder pad trims.

Thanks for looking and, as always, all comments are welcome! :thumbsup:

This is an army that will stand proud on the table top - as it should! Good luck for the ETL, nothing like an event to get models done :biggrin.: For some advice from a seasoned "Iron Hand":

Hobby

Build and paint Dreadnoughts

Strategy

Take Dreadnoughts in lists

Tactics

Get Dreadnoughts to do stuff during the game

Advanced Iron Handing

Get Forge World Dreadnoughts

There, think that about covers it :wink:

IFF: Since you've turned traitor, someone had to lead Ferrus Manus' children to victory and glory eternal! ;)

WF: Cheers! FW Dreadnoughts are definitely on the list for later on!

Now, because I'm prone to forgetting stuff (and perhaps this will be of some use to folks), here's the recipe for my Brazen Claws.

Blue & red:

  1. Red: basecoat with GW Mephiston Red;
  2. Blue: basecoat with a mix of GW Kantor Blue and Caledor Sky (not sure in what proportions, I think it's 1:1 or 1:2 in favour of Caledor Sky);
  3. Controlled recess wash of Army Painter Strong Tone (red) and P3 Armor Wash (blue);
  4. Paint everything that won't be either blue or red with Coat d'Arms Black;
  5. Clean up with respective base colours;
  6. Edge highlights of GW Fire Dragon Bright and GW Lothern Blue;
  7. Clean up with respective base colours.

Eye lenses:

  1. Basecoat with GW Ceramite White though leave a "border" of black;
  2. Wash once with GW Biel-Tan Green;
  3. Once dry, wash once more with GW Biel-Tan Green;
  4. Once dry, paint two small dots on the lens: one in the bottom front corner of the lens and one in the top rear corner (try and make these as small as possible).

Gunmetal:

  1. Basecoat with GW Leadbelcher;
  2. Heavy all-over wash of P3 Armor Wash;
  3. Edge highlight/drybrush with GW Ironbreaker.

Brass/gold:

  1. Basecoat with GW Runelord Brass;
  2. Heavy all-over wash of GW Seraphim Sepia;
  3. Lighter all-over wash of GW Druchii Violet;
  4. Edge highlight with GW Ironbreaker.

Black:

  1. Basecoat of Coat d'Arms Black;
  2. Edge highlight of GW Dawnstone;
  3. Clean up with CDA Black.

Basing:

  1. Paint metal bits using recipes for gunmetal and brass/gold;
  2. Apply GW Typhus Corrosion to metal bits (not too much, just enough for it to look worn and grimy);
  3. Cover any "earth" areas with a thick layer of GW Armageddon Dust;
  4. Apply FW Dark Sand generously to areas covered by GW Armageddon Dust and sparingly around the bottom of the model (feet and lower legs or tracks and lower armour), especially in nooks and crannies where sand/dust would collect;
  5. Paint rim with CDA Black.
