Midnightmare
Some lovely work on here Doghouse, both your sculpting and your painting. I must say these Word Bearers in the pre-Heresy look brilliantly done, massive kudos mate :tu: Also, and most importantly, great to see you back on the road to good health :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/347046-starting-over-now-with-truescale-tutorial-video/page/4/#findComment-5154900 Share on other sites

Doghouse
Thanks guys. hushrong: Well these guys aren't too bad to make but can be a little bit costly, not horrifically though. I picked up the MkIII marines for £19 for ten, Cataphracti for £25 for 5 and the chest pieces for £1 each. It works out at £7.90 for each guy. You could work around this with casting your own from a few masters though as I have seen many people do but I find the process of putting them together very therapeutic and I can knock them together very quickly. I have another 40 of these guys at the moment in bits so should be good for a while yet. I'm glad to hear you are making your own with an alternative method. Primaris are actually really good for that but it's great to see you experimenting more importantly. Markus_: Thanks mate, not sure where they are heading just yet but I did find a couple of these in my bits box earlier that I might be able to use. http://i64.tinypic.com/2j0kp4g.jpg Midnight Runner: Thanks I appreciate the sentiment. Greenz
Haha, I that’s awesome! From “what can I do with my bits box?”, to eleven knock out true scales. If that’s not a plasticrack addiction, I don’t know what is! Those pre-heresy Bearers look fantastic, those different kits work so well together! I really like the angle you’re working with them, being pre-pre-heresy and “a time when they were all heroes”. That’s not something I see often at all (though I don’t venture into the 30k sub forum often). I can’t wait to see what’s coming! hushrong
I think one day I need to try and copy your work! It’s been fun seeing what others have done and trying to replicate it. And even though it takes me longer to make a marine I do appreciate them more. Corsair
Haven't posted here in years, but looked today on a whim and found your thread. As always, your work is an inspiration. I'm also truly sorry to hear about your health concerns, all the best mate. Doghouse
Greenz: Thanks mate. Yeah I have had a few moments when these guys nearly became Space Wolves but I love the tragedy of the traitors. These guys fought in the name of the Emperor and Mankind to carve out the Imperium and reunite humanity and it's easy to remember the bad stuff over the good. The appeal of the Word Bearers to me is that they are complicated. They fought for humanity out of their devotion and worship for the Emperor and when they were refuted by him for creating icons and idols in his name it must have hit them hard. To be humiliated and rejected by someone they saw to be a God is utterly mind boggling to me, I can't even begin to fathom how much that must have stung. Then you have the pre-pre-heresy aspect of a Legion like this where they started to change their colours from grey to red only about forty years before the Heresy began if I remember right. And it's this period before they were refuted that really interests me. Back in the day before the forge world Heresy stuff was made there were pockets of us discussing, scrutinising every tiny bit of lore we could find, talking about armour variants and what was canon for the period or not. It was a niche within a niche, as I am sure Apologist will back me up on here, but it almost felt like 40k historical wargaming and it was really interesting. This is what lead me to come up with my first truescale terminator based conversions because in my head 30k felt a lot more grand and I wanted to portray the Astartes of that time in a more credible light because of all the research we were all doing. Technically speaking the terminator based truescale guys are historical wargaming minis in that respect and through the work of the likes of Apologist and Synapse and all the others that went on to make armies of them and still do to this day even here on the B&C the method for creating them has mainly been firmly rooted in the Heresy era. Had I been in charge of Forge World the Heresy would have been truescale. :D hushrong: Well I think you are capable of it and they are a very nice little project even if you make one and of course these days with all the primaris knocking about there are plenty of materials and techniques. :) Corsair: Well first things first welcome back mate and I appreciate the kind words. :tu: HvitrVakdyr: Well hopefully if I can focus for long enough I'm going to take a bash at putting together a video on how to make this version of the truescale Astartes. I'm hoping to put one up over the weekend some time if I can remember how to use youtube. Doghouse
Ishagu: Thanks mate, I'm recovering well and I appreciate the sentiment. Well I've been playing around with making a truescale tutorial and the good news it went very well. I think I could do a few of these for lots of conversions and stuff to be honest. The bad news is to get them off my camera I think I need an SD card (which seem to be dirt cheap) so a slight delay. Doghouse
Well some good news I've figured out how to get video off my camera and onto my PC. I'd make a rubbish Iron Hand but some how I confused the camera's machine spirit into doing my bidding. I think I may have forgotten the consecrated oils when I stuck the rune marked on a second time... In the meantime a while ago I started some Black Templars and decided to bulk them out to a size that I could use them in forty kay as a detachment. I'm still cleaning up the original ten I started but have base coated another 20 to bring them up to a legal army size. All I need after that is to add a Chaplain to go with the Castallan and we're good to go. They are a little messy for now but I am confident I can clean them up nicely. http://i65.tinypic.com/2a6s4xv.jpg http://i65.tinypic.com/2ylqpee.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/347046-starting-over-now-with-truescale-tutorial-video/page/4/#findComment-5159165 Share on other sites
Doghouse
Well back to my Word Bearers... I'm still playing around with them but have started work on the Praetor/Centurion. I'm tempted to make him into a first sergeant rather than a senior officer because I don't think every detachment would be lead by a famous hero. I think 40k in general is very big and bold and screams mighty heroes battling but from a historical gaming view point not every French army is going to be lead by Napoleon if you see what I mean. There's also the sense of lost potential, the idea that this guy leading them had the Great Crusade gone on uninterrupted could have gone on to be one of their greatest commanders but because of the choices he and the others made that future is now closed to them. The Chapter itself will be the Graven Star, the addition of the chapter icon on their left knee signifies that this is a unit that is in service after Lorgar was re-united with the Legion, the chapters taking the names of the star constellations of his homeworld. So the change from the Imperial Heralds to Word Bearers is still quite fresh and these are mostly likely mostly Terrans with some new recruits thrown in. Picking a chapter should be simple but from a fictional historical viewpoint it's a little trickier. Calth was pretty nasty for both sides of the conflict and several Chapters that were committed were destroyed. As I prefer the stamped on look of the transfers for this time over freehand you are limited if you want to go historically accurate. I looked at a few such as the Flayed Hand, the Unspeaking, the Serrated Suns, basically the ones on the transfer sheet and then read into the events on Calth to see who made it out. I had considered the Twisting Rune chapter initially because that is the one that comes in the Battle for Calth game and so is pretty cheap to do but they were a thrown together chapter made up of those that hated the Ultramarines and were destroyed in the caverns beneath Calth. So I went for Graven Star. They have transfers that will help quite a bit firstly, they specialise in ship to ship boarding actions which ties in the MK III armour quite nicely and more importantly they withdrew from Calth and later took part in the Shadow Wars. So all three boxes ticked. This is a little update but I've base coated the Prator/Centurion and have started to add shade which I will clean up later. I've also started adding Colchisian rune script that was used to denote senior Legion members, the tactical marine can been seen using the dark angels style red tactical arrow that was later dropped in favour of replacing it with their Chapter icon. As the left shoulder pad is taken up I've added the chapter icon to the right knee instead. http://i68.tinypic.com/142dgno.jpg http://i65.tinypic.com/2iibeko.jpg http://i64.tinypic.com/jpg1mp.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/347046-starting-over-now-with-truescale-tutorial-video/page/4/#findComment-5159174 Share on other sites
Markus_
You're an absolute mad lad with the speed with which you model these out. Really liking how your army composition and bits of fluff are coming along for the Word Bearers. I also think you're right on the money with the 'historical wargaming' bit. Doghouse
Thanks mate. :D Well hopefully you'll see how quickly I can knock these guys out now when the video is up. :) Yeah the fictional historical aspect is what appeals to me a lot I think, I see it a lot like some of these re-enactors you see trying to work out service dates on rifles or swords. Doghouse
Well after much cussing and jiggery pokery I've managed to put together the Truescale tutorial video. Ignore the Mk II comments, it was a bit of a struggle focusing and I've done some not so graceful cuts where I was starting to ramble, slur a bit, repeat myself or forget what I was talking about. It's a bit rough and ready but on the whole though it's turned out not too bad. lionofjudah
Wow!! Brother, I’m grateful you’re continuing to put out such incredible work for the hobby!! Your word bearers knocked it out of the park and I’ve not had a chance to watch your video tutorial but it’s on my list for tomorrow :) are the parchments on the bearers going to get any scriptwork? I’m working at speed to finish my regular sized marines and then have a small pile ready to put 25 true scaled marines together and 6 of Apologists largerized terminators using the resin custodes term is. Ryltar Thamior
Every time I load this thread, my eyes begin to pop out of my head.I am, as ever, in awe of just how a square footage of truescale Black Templars looks; and you've done some really nice work with those XVIIth - both in terms of making grey armour not appear 'boring' with the metallic accents, the 'softness' of the tone etc .. as well as all the littl touches with the devotionals and such upon them. Well done. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/347046-starting-over-now-with-truescale-tutorial-video/page/4/#findComment-5159946 Share on other sites
Doghouse
HvitrValdyr: Thanks mate, I hope it helps. Eldrick Shadowblade: Cheers mate :) lionofjudah: Thanks mate, I look forward to seeing what you come up with. My Word Bearers are a bit early days yet but I will be finishing the oaths on their armour at some point with script. While I have no real desire to try my luck at youtube stardom I can appreciate the usefulness of being able to do tutorials and post vids to show others. Augustus b'Raass: Thanks mate I appreciate the compliment and hope it helps. Ryltar Thamior: Thanks mate. I am enjoying the Word Bearers and Templars at the moment and it dawned on me that they are kind of very similar in their outlooks with the Emperor till the Word Bearers got chastised. Still got a lot of work to do on them but I'm just going to go slow and steady. I may have a bash at a vid showing how to use Primaris to make truescale this weekend, I'll see how it goes. Might be a way to make cheapish versions. Pearson73
Wow, it's been too long since I checked in on this thread, you've really been turning out some good stuff! I'm really liking the Word Bearers, it's refreshing to see them in their pre-madness granite, the attention to detail and thought given to their chapter and the according markings for the Praetor are what makes projects ten times better. The white Reiver looks cracking too, all the extra gear strapped to his chest reinforces his position as a member of a roving kill team of last chancers.
