Running a small allied Battalion

It's just a general idea at the moment I haven't completely figured out the 1500 portion of it yet as I am still testing in games. I have noticed that larger primaris teams are not faring well and may end up with more kill teams than originally posted

Don't mind me, just get carried away with concepts sometimes :P

I think one reason why your primaris get ripped so hard is you just don't have the supporting alternate targets for mass fire against you, and once your two dreads are gone, or people have weapons not really worth firing at them, not much else too shoot at.

Another approach might be just taking advantage of Strategems and mission tactics. That’s my approach anyway. Basic dreads are quite threatening in deep strike. Remember in 7 th it was so expensive to do this and dreads are better now. Heck the Redemptor is more tempting now than ever and trust me I’ve used that junker many times with Ultra and would have killed to deepstrike it.

The allied piece can be viewed as a cheap 5cp that look after your zone, or in my case, provide the heavy hitting Onager freeing up my elite DW to be.... elite.

I really feel a lot of the choices are illusions, just keep it simple. I personally love Primaris models but they can be really inefficient if you’re not careful.

What are you equipping the scions with?

As much plasma as possible most likely.

I'm gonna try out one 10 man squad with all plasma and two 5 man squads with melta. It might be a while but I'll be sure to post something when I get to test out the list!

I would go all plasma for better range and more shots.

I want to, but then the rest of my list would be seriously lacking in the anti-tank department. Without some melta, my anti-tank would consist of:

-4 hellblasters in a kill team

- 4 frag cannons split among two kill teams

- plasma from the scion squads (with lucky dice)

I just think in my situation the melta is a better choice. I at least have some heavy hitting guns that can be supplemented by plasma and frag in the rest of the list. This is why we test things of course. If the melta is not up to snuff I'll certainly give even more plasma a shot!

Telion gives you something unique and he's cheap, but he isn't incredible. If you want staying power to sit in deployment zone then raven guard become very tough to shift at range.

Iron hands tactics could be good if you expect those scouts to end up closer than 12" - it works out better than the RG tactic under those circumstances.

Just for backline, I would go Raven Guard as well.

Cap and Lt, 2 5 man scouts with camo cloaks and a Hvy bolter each for hellfire, then either 5 more scouts with a ML for flakk, or some tacs for a bit of manuverability and not having to rely on cover and cloaks to keep you safe.

I don't see much value in the Cpt and Lt for scout squads. I think with the changes to first turn assaults scouts are not nearly as useful now.

He want's to use them for back line objective holders and character sniping. Cap and LT provide the most re-rolls to deliver that objective.

In the greater scheme of things, with Scouts being used as DS denial, I would agree with you.

Well another thing I was thinking as the 2nd battalion for backfield camping and to utilise our flakk/hellfire stratagems is:

Librarian

Watch Captain Artemis (or similiar)

5x Veterans - 4x Stalker, 1x Storm Shield, 1x Heavy Bolter

5x Veterans - 4x Stalker, 1x Storm Shield, 1x Heavy Bolter

5x Veterans - 4x Stalker, 1x Storm Shield, 1x Missile Launcher

=576pts

For the price of Artemis, I'd rather another watch master for the re-roll misses, C-SM librarian powers are pretty situational as well, not a big fan of them either, would still prefer a LT. As for stalker bro's, I am a big big fan of your setups (add in the free chainsword as well though). No sniping, but thats still 24 shots being piled out, plus the option to use both MW stratagems.

Watch Master is a good idea, what would you take instead of Libby? If only we could take a Lt that would be ideal

Oops, forgot we were talking about DW again. :D

Probably a chaplain, more 4+ invul and cheapest option. Yo0u don't get the BS 2+ of a captain, but if you resist the urge to tool him up, another captain would be good as well. Have 2 squads stay near the watch master and have the cap leading the other squad in case you need to move around a bit.

Alright this is what I've come up with

Librarian

Watch Master

5x Veterans - 4x Stalker, 1x Storm Shield, 1x Heavy Bolter

5x Veterans - 4x Stalker, 1x Storm Shield, 1x Heavy Bolter

5x Veterans - 4x Stalker, 1x Storm Shield, 1x Missile Launcher

Watch Captain - TH/SB, Bane Bolts

Watch Captain - TH/SS, Beacon

5x Intercessors - Bolt Rifle, 4x Hellblasters - Plasma Incin

5x Intercessors - Bolt Rifle, 4x Hellblasters - Plasma Incin

5x Intercessors - Auto Bolt Rifle, 3x Aggressors - Flamestorm

Contemptor Mortis - 2x Twin Autocannon

Relic Leviathan - 2x Storm Cannon, 1x Hunter Killer

= 1999 pts

So you can only have the same number of Relic units as normal units in that battlefield role. If you want a Relic Leviathan you need another Heavy Support to allow it and the Contemptor Mortis fills that role. Only other options we have is Hellblasters or Land Raiders from the codex and Contemptor Mortis, regular Mortis and Rapiers from FW.
