Black Templar Kill Teams

Recommended Posts

I would hope the next Kill Team update (Commanders) has an apothecary.

In the meantime, take the apothecary, run it as a tactical medic.

(It better have at least something else though, the only space marine character mentioned in the reveal was a filthy witch bookkeeper!)

Hopefully, they will reveal more, better, commanders in the coming month.

They talked about 41 kits. So yeah. Hopefully there will be a cool melee option for marines.

With a commander you could maybe even do a workable melee kill team as Marines.

Urgh.

I didn'T think they'd be counting the normal 40k models as part of those 41. Would have been a really nice chance to reintroduce multipart characters and step away from those single pose models...

Well okay. Converted gravis captain it will be at some point then.

:cuss it. I tried making Adeptus Astartes Black Templar kill teams but it just doesn't work and the commanders won't help :cuss. I can do effective primaris kill teams, but it's not what my overzealous melee specialists were made for.

What I ended up doing is playing Deathwatch on paper and using BT models. I can give each guy a power weapon, combi- ,or stormshield, I have special melee dude that re-rolls charges, everyone has 2+ attacks and I can take both zealot and combat specialist. Plus I can use a non-primaris commander.

Yep for me KT sucks - it lacks 3 factions i have. Black Templars, sororitas and inquisition.

and i do not even have models with bolters - only BP and chainswords.

Playing bolterguys is fine, but not being able to play any chainswordguys (apart from a single sergeant) sucks. So much for extensive customisation of every single model. Until GW stops pushing Primaris models down my every orifice, I'll stick to playing them as count-as-deathwatch, where I can run my emperor's champ as black shield zealot, give each model power maces, power swords or thunder hammers, plus plenty of combi plas/meltas, stormshields, etc. And if I do want to run primaris at some point, I can. Besides, the models are mostly black anyway.

This is a successful list for me so far, 2 meltas + 3 rapid fire plasmas to deal maximum multidamage wounds, plus every combi weapon can use the special ammo on the bolter mode. It's far from perfect, sarge has plasmagun that needs 1cp per shot to prevent overheat and I have to expose him to get good shots, but giving him melta would expose him even more. Everyone still has 1 wound and a single model going down is 20% of the army. On the other hand, the amount of kills you can pull of each shooting phase is nuts, plus you have 2 attacks with power weapons on every model (and black shield can charge with 4x Str 5 AP-3 attacks). I play against orks often, so I use power mauls, but they cost the same as power swords so you can switch them as needed. The list is also very CP hungry, 1cp every time you shoot plasmas (apart from sniper), some re-rolls and plenty of tactics to use in close combat.

+ Leader [20pts] +

Watch Sergeant [20pts]: Combi-plasma [4pts], Leader

+ Specialists [61pts] +

Black Shield [21pts]: Combi-melta [3pts], Power sword [2pts], Zealot

Veteran [20pts]: Combi-plasma [4pts], Power maul [2pts], Sniper

Veteran [20pts]: Combi-plasma [4pts], Comms, Power maul [2pts]

+ Non-specialists [19pts] +

Veteran [19pts]: Combi-melta [3pts], Power maul [2pts]

This is a simple, casual list. Everyone has special-ammo bolter and power weapon. 2 attacks with everyone, 3 with sarge, combat spec, black shield (+1 on charge). You have 1 more model than the previous list as well. You can make better lists with infernus bolters, shotguns, frag cannons, etc. but these two I think are the easiest to build for most BT players from the models and weapons they typically use.

My current "Deathwatch" Black Templar Sword Brethren list is this:

Leader: Chaplain "Watch Sergeant" with power maul and combi-melta

Combat: Emperor's Champion "Intercessor Sergeant" with power sword and bolt pistol

Zealot: Vanguard "Black Shield" with power sword (axe) and storm shield

Brethren: Veteran with combi-plasma

Brethren: Veteran with combi-plasma

5 bodies, 98 points. I suppose I should give one of the com-plas guys a specialism. I wish I could find a way to have more bodies around the Champion and Chaplain, even if I lose killing power.

Chiming in here, this has worked pretty well for me:

Sergeant:Power Sword & Plasma Pistol

Specialist One: Tac Marine w/ Bolter; Specialization: Zealot

Specialist 2: Tac Marine Gunner w/ Plasmagun Specialization: Demolitions

Specialist 3: Tac Marine Gunner w/ Heavy Bolter Specialization: Heavy

Regulars:

4x Scouts w/ Combat Knife and Bolt Pistols

This generally works pretty well for me, and it's fairly fluffy (at least to how I run my crusade squads on occasion). Definitely wish we could get more CC but this works.

Looks like it’ll finally be possible to get some proper Templar flavour into our kill teams with the new Elites expansion. Of course it’s adding Chapter Tactics (no confirmation yet but ours will almost certainly be the usual charge rerolls) but we’ll also be getting 3 flavours of veterans: Sternguard, Vanguard and Company Veterans. So for a few extra points you’ll be able to have a kill team of Sword Brethren, or kit out a close combat crusader squad, albeit one where the initiates are veterans. I’m looking forward to it!

What would be your dream kill team using the new elite options along with the existing Astartes options?

Re-rolling charges is confirmed. https://youtu.be/rPW_VzMpF8E?t=852 at 14:12

Anything else for us? I.e no Libby atleast

I don’t think it specifies that we can’t take librarians. Probably an oversight. Unfortunately I don’t think the vets can take storm shields which is unfortunate cause I gave all my sword vets storm shields. Looks like I need more models.

Edit: I'm blind, all vets except Sternguard can take storm shields.
