that, and the way it connects to the carapace is different, thus requiring at least that much to be different, not to mention minor details to help it look right in proportion to the rest of the Titan carrying it.

Folks, I'm trying to plan how to magnetise my Reavers. I have one of the current kits and plan to get one of the new kits with the Melta and chainfist.

 

For now, I'm just planning to magnetise at the shoulder (as opposed to the arm mount) mainly because I don't think one 2mm magnet will hold the gun, I don't really fancy doing multiple magnets as that will be a headache and I don't have a 5mm drill bit to use 5mm magnets.

 

I'm planning to have a left handed power fist and a right handed chain fist. I don't know which arms to put the remaining for weapons on.

 

I guess my question is what weapons pair best with what? If I have a left handed Melta and left handed Gatling Blaster, I can't pair them, but can run them with a chain fist or either of the other two weapons, as an example.

 

Alternatively, is there a better way to magnetise at the shoulder and at the weapon? I feel there probably is, but I'd still be interested in the weapon pairing discussion above.

The power fist is light enough to be magnetized with a 3 mm magnet.  And you don't need a 3 mm drillbit for it.  The reaver ranged weapons might need 5 mm magnets, but this... butcher... method of a craftsman also works for 5 mm magnets.

I'll skip past the pairing debate for the time being Dallo, because I've gone for the utility approach! So, whilst I've got one fist that looks deliberately glued to be left handed for a pose - I can still swap that, or any others, and use them either side, assuming I'm not too fussed about which way the connector points - and actually, I don't think it makes that much of a difference visually. 

 

Quite simply, parts C16 or C45 - I've literally cut the top off to make them flat: I've used Green Stuff with Super Glue to affix the magnet in a roughly horizontal pose. In the arm socket, I've filled this with Green Stuff, before adding the appropriate magnet so any of the weapons can plug and play into that shoulder joint. It means for future, I can basically swap in any weapon, as these are likely to be ubiquitous - or are likely to have connectors I can do that with in any case. 

 

The emphasis here is on efficiency, but means I can comfortably pair basically anything with anything else: I've not built the other fist just yet, but I'll assume it'll be worth making this right handed just for variety, and so that I could run this paired in future. Anything else, will just work!

 

I'm using 5x1mms across the board for basically all Titans and weapon mounts: it makes it consistent and hopefully versatile - but naturally, much will also depend on magnet size/strength as a relative factor too.

I haven't thought of the best pairing of weapons yet. I magnetised my reavers at the shoulder, at both top and bottom of the "arm" and at the weapon joint of course. My goal was to have maximum flexibility. Don't hesitate to check my project log as I posted a couple of rather extensive "progress reports" on this.

 

Next reavers I'll magnetise, I'll most likely use 3x2mm magnets for the shoulders, 3x1mm magnets for the arm (top and bottom) and weapon. Main issues encountered are related to magnet strength and getting the position right at the top of the arm so that the positioning is dynamic (aiming for the "arms" to be slightly spread away from the body).

 

My experience with 3x1mm magnets is fine, but I feel 3x1mm may be a bit light at the shoulder unless you have perfect contact, hence watch out for not "burying" your magnets too deep.

 

Hence also my choice for 3x2mm magnets for the next ones. Also this might allow to magnetise the shoulder armour plates - still to be tested. And this might lessen the potential for badly positioning your magnet or having it flip side while being pushed into position.

 

For the carapace weapon, I used a 5x1mm magnet glued on the torso in the designed location and a 3mm diameter steel ball inserted in the base of the Apoc launcher (with toilet paper to fill the hole so that the steel ball is not buried too deep).

 

Providing you work methodically, using magnets of various sizes is no headache at all and you can actually be quite fast when magnetising multiple titans at once (sub-assemblies and chain work basically).

 

It helps choosing a direction for your magnets and stick to it. I use the "arm" and weapon of one my knights to "check" my magnets are oriented in the chosen direction. Basically, in my case, I chose that all the magnets glued on the torso and shoulders - for weapons and heads - would attract towards them.

 

Also best to have some wooden stick or long and thin plastic element to maintain magnets in place (especially if you use another magnet or a metallic part to put them into place, like a 1mm drillbit as I do).

 

Beware of your magnets inadvertently flipping while gluing them. Check and re-check as much as necessary. Once glued you'd have to butcher the piece to remove the magnet (I did that a couple of times, fortunately enough the socket renders the butchering invisible).

 

I borrowed 1mm drillbits from my old dad and bought a set of 5 drillbits, from 2mm to 6mm, from a DIY store. Cost was around EUR 15 for 5 drillbits (able to drill through metal).

 

An alternative I haven't tried yet for reavers would be to glue the arm into the shoulder socket and only magnetise at the arm - weapon joint. This works for a shooty reaver only as it removes the possibility to use the power fist.

 

Of course variations are many and the best is to find the method you are most comfortable with.

Tip on magnetizing reaver's shoulders.  You can first worry about the magnet and polarization and then greenstuff the shoulder so that it sits in a good, natural position.  I found that mine were floppy (using 5 mm magnet on shoulder and gun, with 3 mm magnets on 'upper arm').  A little bit of green stuff on the 'upper arm' ball bit and floppyness was gone. 

I’m mixing antishield and antiarmor. Volcano/Gatling or melta/Gatling, laser/fist, etc. I actually dont worry too much about range bands as you really can’t control which range band you sit at in most games. Between line of sight and Warhounds or Knights racing at you, I don’t know that we can safely equip a titan for long range end expect to have it sit comfortably.

 

Likewise a titan with a 12-24” range is going to spend half the game getting into position so I’d rather mix ranges than have specialists who will get targeted first.

 

That said, the first Reaver I made was a brawler with a PF/CF and Turbolasers. :)

Theoryrafting, I think this is always a compromise. In theory, you are either trying to strip shield or kill the target that has lost its shields.  Because splitting fire requires orders it is tad ineffective.  So ideally a titan would either fire at target to collapse its shields OR to deliver a killing blow.  

 

Now reaver can be made an excellent shield stripper with two gatling blasters and set of missiles. That's a lot of dakka that's going to say 'ciao' to any shields - or any banners that wander too close.  However such a reaver won't be delivering a killing blow.  Meanwhile a reaver with laser blaster / melta cannon / volcano cannon (combinations) can deliver a killing blow to any chassis -but cannot strip down shield very effectively.

 

So this raises two questions.  Do I optimize and make a 'shield killer titan' and 'deathblow' titan or do I try to scatter the weapons across multiple frames, making a loss of a single engine less of an issue.  

 

With that out of the way, I think that you want to pair a power fist / chain fist with wither gatling blaster or melta cannon and missiles as such titan will have to walk towards the enemy - and since it won't be lining to deliver killshots, it can just as well as work as short ranged brawler or shield stripper that shoots at 'shields' while getting close to whatever it wants to punch.  This makes sense on paper at least as such an assault titan would likely have to face banners of knights coming to intercept it - and as it happens these anti-shield weapons also wreak havoc among knights.s
