Primaris Upgrade pack

Ordered myself a few of these ready for this weekend, but I almost didn't bother...

I keep thinking back to the old Upgrade Pack we had:

10 very distinct should pads.

2 heads

2 Amulet thingeys

Best Axe and chainsword (for me anyway)

Backpack

Wolf pelt

With this pack you could take any SM model and make him into a Wolf Lord

Primaris:

Dull shoulder pads

a chainsword that has not SW markings (from what I can see)

a half drawn knife (best bit in the upgrade)

2 wolf tails (cause no-one has any spares of those and Primaris wolf tails must be much bigger?)

3 heads (nothing earth shattering)

2 Amulet thingeys

I feel a little deflated, I'm glad we are getting something but it's like when you asked your Mum for Nike trainers and she got Primark (Target for my brothers across the great ocean) own brand.

I think the plainer shoulder pads are actually better for standard marines, as I feel that some of the more ornate ones in the old upgrade pack look out of place if they are repeated too many times. Also, the older pads as far as I remember are flat for the wolf symbol, whereas the newer ones have the wolf symbol layered.

I agree the raised Wolf Symbol is a good addition, I've been buying symbols from Pop Goes The Monkey on Shapeways as they look way better than transfers.  Just wish we'd had a Primaris sized weapon, you know a pistol or axe.

I'll just treat "ragnars" symbol as the legion era symbol for the wolves.

and If I do give my pack a marking it'll either be ablack slab (to represent either the 13th co, or a "special ops" great company that assists the other great companies, and will parade around as on of the other 12 depending on the field they enter)

I'm going to grab a few more ofthe old upgrade packs and combo the kits with the primaris upgrade to make some awesome kits.

I may order one of the Primaris stuff, however I think one of each is ideal. The parts in both kits if used too often gets repetitive. However if I had to choose one to select, it would be the normal SW kit, just because it has some really unique items and isn't focused on only Ragnar's company. Being a Lost Company this is a big hit for me.

I'm kinda glad those tails are smaller, as it allows for more decoration opportunities. Granted, I really would have preferred a wolf skull instead, as those are much harder to come by.

the smaller tails are a big win for me.

they are smaller, and that to me improves the aesthetic for me, they are a additive, not the focus.

The Primaris pack doesn't replace the regular pack, the regular pack still exists.

This is the PRIMARIS pack, it's literally the same as everyone else's Primaris pack, except us and the Blood Angels get chainswords instead of power swords because we are the only ones that can take them on pack leaders/sgt's, Dangles and Smurfs get the Power Swords to put them on their Lt's.

I cut all those blackmane icons off so without the "ornateness" I'd just be in it for the heads and knife arm.

Why not just use regular shoulder pads then?

You mean from the pack kit? Because they have nice designs...like I said. If you’re asking me why not use the regular upgrade instead of the primaris, then yea that was my point.

The question for me is why we didn't get a free upgrade sprue bundled into our primaris kits like the angels got on their release.

well because we dont have primaris kits to bundle with it.

We have the same ones they have though. They just got a free upgrade sprue with their intercessors, agressors, etc. which you can still buy on the GW website. We have to buy the kit (which costs the same) and then also buy the sprue, effectively making our primaris kits more expensive.

Not on the US webstore:

Blood angels intercessors with sprue - $60

Space Marine intercessors no sprue - $60

I'm asking why you'd cut the icon off of a textured shoulder pad instead of using one without it.  There are plenty of "wolfy" options that don't include the Blackmane crest, and it would give you an opportunity to apply other decals or work on your freehand.

And if you're skilled enough to cut the head away so well that you can do those things to it afterward without it looking awful, well then you've got the skill to sculpt what you want onto a regular shoulder pad anyhow.

Personally, I don't want my Primaris to be part of Blackmane's company, but back before there ever was a Ragnar Blackmane, this was practically the symbol for the Chapter anyhow.  You can paint the head or the background differently, but it makes no sense to get the sculpted ones just to deface them.

This is a really odd arguement. Cutting off the icon is maybe 45 seconds of work. Replicating the designs on the trim would be a two day project if done right considering cure time.

I don’t play blackmanes, so I’m not cutting it off to paint it on, that’s a really bizarre point to make. Bottom line I like the way I’ve made my army, that’s why.
