Using Kroot in a T'au Army Inquiry

Hey everyone,

Just curious what you're opinions would be on building a list around Kroot. What I'm thinking is something along these lines..

Troops x6 Kroot Carnivores x60 (6 squads of 10)

Elite x3 Krootox Riders x9 (3 squads of 3)

Fast Attack x3 Kroot Hounds x12 (3 squads of 12 Kroot Hounds)

Heavy Support x5 Hammer Head Gun Ships (With Longstrike)

This is most likely way over 1750.... I'll have to check points later but do you think Kroot could be used like this? Just curious.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

Well ... nothing you'll do will make a list with heavy Kroot focus competetive so it's really just about what you'd like to see in your list.

Kroot Carnivores are not as good a choice as Strike Teams, Krootox Riders while having a nice gun just die too fast for their cost so you'd probably be better off with Ion rifle Pathfinder or Missile Broadsides for a weapon with a similar profile and Kroot Hounds are ... okay, I guess. They just have expensive models and you need lots of them.

Why the focus on Hammerheads? Any specific reason?

I guess the main question is: what do you want to do with the list? Just for friendly fluff games or semi-competetive or even tournaments? Because the last two will be basically impossible to pull of while with the first it doesn't really matter as long as you like the army (tho I'd include one or two Kroot Shaper as well).

The Kroot were mainly there to help generate CPs to focus on the Hammerheads. The Hammerheads are not even really necessary though. Was just remembering that I wanted to eventually have a Kroot army but it seems very difficult to pull off right now. I'll have to give it some play tests. I was also curious if anyone had actually used them or just used math-hammer to make the argument against them.

If you want them to generate CP then you can stop right there already. A min size unit of Kroot is more expensive than a min size unit of Fire Warriors.

There are also better options for the other slots but I won't go too much into detail here since you said you left your original plan anyway and want it to be a Kroot list instead.

A Kroot list will always be a rather low power list currently. The more Kroot you include the weaker it'll be. That's not just math hammer unfortunately. I'm using Kroot Carnivores regularly and they just aren't particularly good. I just like them too much to not use them in friendly games. :P

Kroot are cheap in points right? Like 5-6 points? They're cultist or guardsmen with bolters.

The basis statline for Kroot is OK for the points; the issue is that they do not benefit from Sept Traits or Stratagems so you end up feeling like playing an index army against codex opposition. They do die to a stiff breeze and also have terrible morale, you pretty much need to sprinkle in Ethereals to bolster them which also helps a little as the only HQ that buffs them decently.

If you use them to generate CP which you feed into other units then there can be merit in that, after all it is pretty much just an objectively inferior Loyal 32 that you see in Imperial Soup lists. Objectively inferior to the single best thing in the game is not a terrible criticism, everything else in the game is inferior to it ;)

The problem is that while Kroot are okay-ish for their points, a min sized unit still costs 60p while a Strike Team with superior guns, save and support (Sept tenets, FtGG, Bonding Knife Ritual, Fireblade) cost minimum just 35p.

Sure it's only half the models but if it's just about CP that doesn't matter and even if you scale them up to ten models the difference is still just 10p.

They cost about 50% more compared to cultists and Guardsmen for their scout move, for having Bolter and for having S4 in melee (tho there are Catachans so there's that...) while being in a Codex that doesn't support them at all unlike Cultists and Guardsmen.

Aren't they 5pts p/m these days?

They still can be very useful for Tau Sept to make a big line to draw in more supporting fire. Depending on how stationary your list is they do add a bit more mobility too.

Also there are situations where they outperform fire warriors on the mathhammer, just only at the very low end (cultists etc

Ah my bad, you're right. It makes it a little bit better but still not good. The biggest problem really is that Firewarrior are good (and cheaper at min size) and Kroot not getting any support from the Codex unlike similar units in other Codexes.

  • 3 weeks later...

If you want to go full kroot, as I'm looking into at the moment mate.

Go a proxy army.. I'm thinking Nids will be a good codex to work with (that also works on an extra level with the whole way kroot are biologically adaptive)

Kroot Hounds: Hormagaunts
Kroot: Termagants
Krootox: Tyranid Warrors
Great Knarloc: Carnifexes/Tyrants/Terivgons depending on what you have on their backs
Knarlocs: Hive Guard etc
Tbh I feel the main thing hurting Kroot is the rule of 3. Assuming your opponent let do 20 points = 1 Power. You could do a reasonably good mostly Kroot List. As Greater Krootox and the Cavalry both help key niches. While the Krootox unit itself if you could spam or use it in larger quantities would be an okay anti-tank.

When I use my kroot I usually deploy them as close to the centre of the board as I can then use their scouting move to pull them back.

I find this stops my opponent from deploying too close to my other units.

Also I think they’re great for 5pts, yeah they’re fragile but you get (more or less) Guardsmen with bolters!
