What could Chapter Approved do?

Recommended Posts

I've heard there are some snippets floating about.

I'm dying here.

Really, really anxiously awaiting the CA, much like I would be waiting for/anticipating a new codex.

Maybe im pinning too many hopes on this...but, as everyone has been discussing, this is really needed.

Has anyone heard anything, or spotted any info/discussion/rumours online?

Wouldn't it also be reasonable to guess they'll revise and potentially implement existing Beta Rules as well? And potentially add new ones.  I'd be interested what people think they'll do with the existing Deep Strike delay beta rule as that's by far the most controversial one they've had so far.

Even if it only has point adjustments (so long as they're sensible) and a limitations of CP usage based on which detachment generated it I'll be happy.  Anything past that is icing.

Maybe VDR 2.0? Or is that asking too much? Nobody I know uses them because Open Play doesn't exist.

I just vowed my Land Raider for CoC. If I can make it a Hades Diabolus instead? That'd be awesome!

We’re all anxious

I know Robbin Cruddace was a table judge at Nova. I also know he got a bit of an education on RAW vs RAI. I know they made judgements on the fly that had to be explained to the group as a whole so everyone was on the same page. ( I saw this on the feed and post game interviews with players).

Just my opinion but I think they went home with an understanding of some fundamentals that need tweaking. Every time they experience 40k outside of their environment they make some potent changes based on it. I think it should be any day, but I imagine some of the big moments that happened at the tournament will be addressed. Not to mention ‘the list’ which seemed to be everywhere at that and other events.

This definitely seems to be the case. GW rules designers are still fairly narrative focused and care about balance second (I think they think its balanced). They do seem to be really shocked about how the competitive scene uses the rule set. I don't mean to be down on competitive players but I think a better distinction between the game your Average Joe plays versus the Organized/Tournament play. I personally think the Big FAQ/Beta Rules from a few months back was a mess and my group ignored about everything except cheaper commissars. They made the CP disparity worse between "elite" armies against the horde types with the Battalion and Brigade CP values.

@D3L I almost expect 9th in summer 2019. I enjoy 8th a lot but I think between all the FAQs, CAs, and other sources of where I have to check to make sure my list is accurate and up to date is already becoming tedious after just over a year. I was under the impression one of the big reasons they moved past 7th was that 40k was becoming encyclopedic and needed like 4 books to run an army. This seems like it might be a short edition like 6th.

Didn't they openly market the Chapter Approved books as a yearly supplement? Additionally, I can't see 9th arriving until all the outstanding codexes are brought up-to-date.

Edit: But I do agree, the sooner that they can do some kind of release that consolidates all of the fractured bits of information into one form which will likely be 9th edition, the better.

Do people really not like the turn 2 deep strike rules?

I think for our group it was a mix of why it was done which was crazy alpha strikes in tournaments that then gets imposed on the community writ-large. At least that was some of what my group was saying. I  was playing Elysians during all of that and was slightly miffed about it, but such is life. I think my group was just upset about the tourney players forcing GW's hand and throwing blanket fixes on everyone else in the mean time.

Well let’s put it this way... I don’t know a gunline army that doesn’t like it.

I think you will hear a more.... vocal response from a lot of aggressive marine players lead by a group of angry Grey Knight players :)

I think if they're gonna nerf Turn 1 Deep Striking, then they should nerf Turn 1 shooting as well.

Their stated intentions were to "let the game develop more" and let things breathe instead of having Turn 1 Win Syndrome. Ok, if that's their intentions, why not go all-in and say that Turn 1 is really about Movement and positioning so other actions (Shooting, Reserves, Psychic, Charging) are penalized some how? Make it even handed across all army types as opposed to just a select few.

Anyways, I have a feeling this December 2018 Chapter Approved is going to be pretty beefy. The community backlash about having to pay for points adjustments was universal enough that they definitely took note (even for GW). But that doesn't mean they'll make it cheaper, rather they'll cram more in to try to justify the price.

As such, I imagine there will be some hefty substance in there. The beta SoB Codex being one example.

Just my $0.02

Official news? No, unfortunately not.

All that I "know" is that we'll be getting SoB beta rules and I've heard from multiple sides now that the CA will have something really good for Marines, GK included.

What I hope for is more Stratagems, Relics, Warlord Traits for each faction, reworked terrain rules and a playable version of the deep strike beta rule. My group has nothing against using beta rules but we quickly decided to ignore that one in its current form because it doesn't solve any problems (aside maybe from Terminator/Obliterator bombs) and just makes things harder for melee armies.

'Universal night fighting in effect - all models suffer -1 to hit in the shooting phase'

Killed my interest in the game, TBH. Kind of a poor reaction, I'll admit, but an honest one.

I had the same reaction. It's a terrible rule, and the power level additional rule already solved most problems with reserving deep strikes. The moronic rule about how for the first time in the game in a very long time you can't wobbly model to make very obvious assaults up levels was another nail in the coffin for an edition / LoS ruleset that already favored shooting armies with a limited number of super mobile exceptions.

Combine that with Knights, Astra Militarum, Ynarri, Dark Eldar, and Custodes all being a little over the top, and a lot of armies still having mediocre units post-codex (especially Heretic Astartes, but also many others), and it's a bad mix. Even if a lot of the codexes are creative and cool and the 8th ruleset itself is fundamentally great.

I loved 40k by the end of 2017. As 2018 progressed, I liked it less and less.
