Hello

I've been painting up a small kill team over the last month or so - it's the neophyte hybrids from the kill team box.

Cultists are a bit of a departure for me, and bit of a full circle. In the main, I'm a marine player; I've been playing with marines since Rogue Trader days, and have slowly built up over 6000 points worth. But the game that really hooked me on marines was Space Hulk - terminators versus genestealers. I've always had genestealers hanging around because of it, but have always had a background desire to build up a few hybrids to complete the set.

And now I have. Well, I've made a start, anyway. There's only ten of them right now, and being neophytes, that's not even a full kill team. But it's a work in progress, and I'm enjoying how it's going so far.

Anyway. Photos.

Red Brotherhood

The whole kill team

Red Brotherhood : fire team

My leader, Ilia, flanked by his guards, Nicolai and Yakov

Red Brotherhood : assault team

Team shotgun - Timur, Sergei the icon bearer, and Vitaly the zealot

Red Brotherhood : special weapons

Mikhail the demolitions specialist, and Pavel

Red Brotherhood : heavy weapons

Yegor, my heavy, and Dimitri

I'm trying a lot of new things with them. It's my first time following the base, shade, layer, highlight pattern (usually I just go with neat block colours and dry-brushing), first time trying edge highlights, first time using texture paint. The way I see it, new force, new ideas.

And if you're interested in seeing the team in action, there's a few battle reports over in the kill team forum (http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/349390-kill-team-%E2%80%A2-battle-reports/page-2)

Thanks for the positive comments - they're very encouraging.

If you've been over in the kill team battle report thread, you'll know that my patience with neophytes is wearing a touch thin (because they're awful at doing things). So I've done something about it, and recruited a trio of acolyte fighters to the cause, on the grounds that big smashy close-combat weapons on WS3+ multiple attack hybrids looks like a lot of fun.

Next on the painting list, a couple of metamorphs...

Not a great one, but you can see my metamorph leader (Koschei) at the front of this team photo. His one outting so far saw him diced up by an ad mech infiltrator, but he's probably just a slow starter.

And looking to the future, here's my cult's Patriarch. It's a model I've had for years, but one of the arms went mysteriously missing a long time ago - I finally got round to replacing it, stripping the old paint off and redoing him to match the rest of the Brotherhood.

It's been a while, but quite a productive while. So here's an update on the Brotherhood.

As things stand, all the squads need adding to for combat purposes; and I'm working on a couple of Russes to give myself some shooting capability too. For now, I'm using some old guardsmen to act as brood brothers, and occasionally allying with my wife's Ad Mech in friendly games (because the Cult gets everywhere...)

Thanks Bjorn.

I had the battle-mat out again yesterday (teaching Abaddon and the Black Legion not to mess up the Cult's masterplan), so I got some photos of my ETL additions to the Brotherhood.

And the Primus. I feel tempted by a Magus now, to round out the broodcoven...

Here's the first of my refreshed brood brothers squads:

The last image is two of the closest models I could find, because I was interested to see the difference a 'proper' base, shade, layer, highlight approach and my early teenage straight-out-of-the-pot technique. I've definitely got better at eyes.

It really is*. They still suffer in comparison to newer models like the neophytes, but I was surprised how well they scrubbed up.

* the difference, I mean, rather than a cocky response to Bjorn. Got a bit ninja'd there.

Here's that Magus I decided I needed after all:

I'm working on a command squad, and have a third squad and officers still to go after that.

I've been having a productive few weeks, and have finally updated all of my old guardsmen into retro brood brothers. Here's how they look:

Squad three - these were the ones not in need of new arms, heads or weapon swaps, so they look closest to the originals.

This last image shows the entire brood brother contingent. Back in the RT era, this was my first real army - a box of plastic guardsmen, a few metal officers and a Leman Russ. In 8th edition, it doesn't quite make 400 points. Scary.

It's been a productive but relatively uninteresting few months on the painting table - I picked up the Cult half of the Overkill box, so have been working through various neophytes, acolytes, aberrants and genestealers, adding bodies and options to existing units.

But September has seen me breaking into the Cult starter box, and I've been painting up a ridgerunner. It looks like this:

ridgerunner A

ridgerunner B

The weapon and turret options can be switched around, but I like how this configuration looks (plus, big laser)

  • 2 months later...

A few more bits and pieces - some are from a while ago, others a bit newer, but it's all Cult so it's all good.

acolytes

acolytes

Acolyte reinforcements

genestealers

Genestealers and their little friends - the pair at the back are the first of many Space Hulk era 'stealers.

tech priest

My tech-priest - he's not a codex option, but is a handy support for the tanks if I bring in a Guard detachment.

primus A

A second primus, but in an alternative scheme (grey coat with a red lining - he's slightly flashier than the first one). he also has a bone-coloured bonesword, which I prefer to my original light grey and black ink effort.

rock saws

Rock saws (thanks, ebay)

acolytes flamers

And a few hand-flamers, because it's important to be down with the meta, obviously.
