The Hammer on Vigilus

Do you reckon that the plastic ones in the marine kit serves the same purpose? cause I have a few around.

Oh it would definitely work with those. I don't think they have the hand molded on to the underside do they? That would make it a bit harder.

I just used a hellgun arm, which I cut so that the trigger and hose feed replaced the same part on the plasma gun. For the other arm, I just used the flamer/grenade launcher horizontal grip and stuck it to the side of the plasma gun. Looks decent.

The set of 5 metal plasma guns that GW sells is great for this. You can use them with the scion kit with minimal trouble.

Wow. I did not know that existed. I've been buying them off ebay!

The hand can look a bit big sometimes, as it is a marine hand. So you you may have to replace the trigger mechanism with some Guard bits.

I thought the packs plasma guns from GW were resin? They r really useful, otherwise it takes ages to find them

Maybe, I haven't bought them in ages! Still got like three plasma guns lying around. It's pistols that I am short on.

I need to get some more, got 3 command squads with them, but need some special weapon squads too.

Might even try some melta now it's slightly cheaper.

Certainly makes vets less of a liability which I'll take. I normally take 3 squads with transports (2 melta,  plasma), 1 in a Chimera, 1 in a Taurox and 1 in the Hades Drill (so the special not quite as good vets).

I might also build a load more Crusaders and use the stabby formation. Give my Bullgryns some help in Combat.

Actually quite like all these formations, not very powerful which is great (7th edition PTS) but not utterly useless either.

Does anyone know if the tank detachment needs a special detachment type (I.e. spearhead) or if it works with a battalion/brigade?

If im correct you can give it to any detachment.

Yeah it's fine to give it to anything. Spearhead would make the Russes obsec, from the Codex, but that is just a bonus if you can manage it. Simply making your main battalion/brigade into an Emperor's Fist would boost any Russes in it.

Thats my understanding too

Any battleforged detachment can be made a "Specialist Detachment"

However only the units specified on will actually gain the benefits

Given how the Tank and Artillery ones work, it would probably make sense to have them as a Spearhead, then you get the extra CP for them which you can then spend on making them the Specialist Detachment

You could even make a regular mixed battalion with Scions the Specialist Detachment based around them, although again I think you'd gain the most by making them their own specific Battalion to gain their RD's too

Played a game with tempestus drop force and the emperors wrath artillery company.

Emperors wrath- used the warlord trait and relic. Awesome, will probably be a staple in every game I play from here on out. Ignore cover and/or improved AP on any of them is great. Need to buy a hydra.

*talked it out with my opponent and went with smoke launcher theory that the vehicle doesn't need to be able to shoot to take advantage of rules that happen instead of shooting. Fell back with a basilisk and "suppressive fire"d it to slow a cataphractii down to 2" move.

-tempestus drop force- used the warlord trait. Got to use the safe drop strat on 2 scion squads and a prime. I honestly forgot most of the rules for this formation. The +1 on the turn they drop should have been awesome. Never got a chance to use the over watch as I didnt notice the jump pack chaplain tucked away in a ruin.

I too got to use the Emperor's Wrath yesterday. It was great. I destroyed 2 doomsday arks in my first turn. I went second and even with a bracketed tank commander and a destroyed punisher, I still had the ability to hit back hard due to the strategems.

Is Emperors Wrath that good?

2CP to fire again is pretty expensive? With Guard you normally have a lot of big guns anyway. I like the idea of using it on a Basilisk with Aerial Spotter to dish out a lot of damage, though that does burn CP.

Though I can see it being good on the Wyvern against hordes and the -1AP on 6.

I thought the same thing when I first saw it was 2cp, but now I have come around. The main advantage is that you can get a second shot with all the buffs the first one had. For example, the Wrath relic only affects 1 unit a turn. With the stratagem, it lets you get 2 shots with the effect instead of one. This can get quite large if you stack those buffs.

You also have to consider that an extra shot on turn one can be really valuable. Getting as much damage out as early as possible can vastly reduce the amount of fire that is coming back at you.

I think double shooting twin linked shred potential ignore cover AP -1 wyvrens are pretty good... :biggrin.:

I think I got my rules correct for that combo?

That would be aerial spotter for reroll misses, relic for ignore cover, -1ap on sixes with warlord trait. You could add a salamander command vehicle for +1 to hit, although they are expensive so I wouldn't recommend them.

I didn't bother with the relic for the Emperor's wrath. It's nice, but you need to get very close to use it. What I did was spend 2 CP. One to create the Emperor's wrath the second to make a secondary warlord to command the artillery detachment. So I had Creed running the army with his typical STT (which is God tier on him) and lord of ordinance on the company commander sitting in my artillery park. That company commander also took laurels and had a squad with voxcaster to screen the basilisks. The voxcaster allowed him to give orders to troops that were further forward whilst buffing the basilisks. I Also spent one more CP to give another character the aquila. My CP for the start of the game was as 12 (brigade)+1 (spearhead)+3 (battle forged)+2 (Creed)-1 (2nd relic)- 1 (2nd warlord)- 1 (specialist detachment)= 15 CP. I gained 1 CP every turn with the aquila. The best combo with the Emperor's wrath is overlapping fields of fire with the shoot twice stratagem for a basilisk. That turned 3 basilisks into 4 all hitting on 3+ rerolling 1s. Every wound roll of 6 did -4 AP. That pretty much goes through the saving throw of anything without an invulnerable save.

Hall - wow!! Quite the set up.

I took the ignore cover relic and had him halfway between a basilisk and a wyvern. 6" from each with tanks 12" apart to save them both from one melee.

I also brought a tech priest. Between him and jury rigging I kept those tanks pumping out good dakka.

So now that's it been out for a bit, what do people think about the portrayal of Guard in the book?

Personally I was a bit underwhelmed. I'm used to Guard being the wipping boy until some Space Marines come and saved the day, but this seemed to turn it up to eleven in some parts. Also that none of the special detachments really seemed to tie into the fluff presented much at all.
