Trickstick
I'm still a little confused as to how these formations work. Do you just pick a detachment and give it a bunch of extra rules for free? You can upgrade a detachment for 1cp. This gives certain units in that detachment an extra keyword. For example, all Leman Russes in an Emperor's Fist detachment gain the Emperor's Fist keyword. For all of the ones I have read, these keywords don't do anything by themselves. However, almost all of the extra stuff only works on these keywords. For example, you can pick a warlord trait for Emperor's Fist Leman Russes that only affects Emperors Fist Leman Russes within 6", or a stratagem you can only use on that keyword. There is an additional thing. A new stratagem that let's you give a detachment's warlord trait to a unit in that detachment for 1cp, which you can do in addition to your normal warlord trait. So, using Emperor's Fist as an example, you can give the aura to a tank commander with the keyword, as long as he is not your warlord. A way to get these nice new, albeit limited use, traits without sacrificing your normal trait. HallofStovokor
I'm still a little confused as to how these formations work. Do you just pick a detachment and give it a bunch of extra rules for free? So you have to pick a detachment that has the required units for each formation. It costs 1CP to make the formation and if you want to give the detachment leader the warlord trait while keeping your original warlord, it costs another CP. You can't make a 3rd warlord, but you can give each detachment a special detachment rule set. Trickstick
You can't make a 3rd warlord, but you can give each detachment a special detachment rule set. What makes you say that? You can use the Field Commander stratagem multiple times, but only once per specialist detachment. HallofStovokor
I guess so, but that seems expensive. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/351930-the-hammer-on-vigilus/page/5/#findComment-5222673 Share on other sites
Wassa
1 CP to make it the specialist detachment. You can pick the detachment warlord trait for your warlord for free, else pay 1CP to have a secondary non warlord character to have the detachment warlord trait. Relics obey normal Relic/Armoury CP rules. Special Strategems cost normal CP. So they can be a drain on CP if you don’t have enough. Expect loyal 32/64 to appear more in other armies! Trickstick
I guess so, but that seems expensive. True but I almost always take at least a brigade. Guard are spoilt when it comes to cp. HallofStovokor
Yes guard have a lot of CP, but our stratagems are where they need to be spent. With the Emperor's wrath double fire stratagem costing 2 CP and overlapping fields of fire also costing 2 CP (I play cadia), that costs so much that I never want to spend more than the 2 CP to setup the detachment and give a second warlord trait. Creed is always my warlord, because STT is the best warlord trait and Creed with STT is truly awesome. mertbl
Its classic guard to me. Holding the line, running out of everything important, waiting on the big E to bless them with relief in whatever form it comes in. So now that's it been out for a bit, what do people think about the portrayal of Guard in the book? Personally I was a bit underwhelmed. I'm used to Guard being the wipping boy until some Space Marines come and saved the day, but this seemed to turn it up to eleven in some parts. Also that none of the special detachments really seemed to tie into the fluff presented much at all. mertbl
Played another game using TDF and EWAC. I'm probably done with the drop force. The Artillery company just keeps producing. Advancing or falling back and then using that vehicle to pop suppressive fire is a great utility, we will see if that gets faq'ed next week. Diagramdude
No, you pay 1 CP to give a detachment a new keyword to the listed units. Then you have access to a warlord trait, relic, and a couple stratagems that usually key off of the new keyword your units have. None of the formation grant new native abilities or free units or whatever cancer from 7th. Basically a new warlord trait, relic and strats, some of which are really good and some are situational and some are just bad. The artillery wrath one and scions are the guard standouts to me. Also that none of the special detachments really seemed to tie into the fluff presented much at all. The Conclave fits with how Vigilus is described as an Ecclesiarchy heavy planet but not really with any of the descriptions of the action. Scion drop forces do come up a lot though. So you have to pick a detachment that has the required units for each formation. There's no units requirement, you can have a specialist detachment that does nothing or just has a single unit that benefits. Some of the relics and warlord traits aren't limited so you could just pay a cp and get a new trait for your regular warlord. TheShredder
I'm probably happier than I should be about having further options for CP sinks. Usually, I spend 3 CPs on relics, 1CP each turn rerolling a 1 for Lascannon damage, and then I end the game with about 10CP still unspent. HallofStovokor
While you can make a tank formation from a detachment with no tanks, why would you? If you put Emperor's Wrath on a detachment with no artillery units, did you really make an artillery company? Technically yes, but all you really did was waste CP. I guess I should have phrased it as you should pick at detachment that has units for those formations. Phubar
You select a detachment (det) and you give to certain units a new keyword by spending 1 CP. Then you have access to 2 more stratagems, a relic and a warlord trait, all usable only with the specific keyworded units of that det. You still have to pay CPs when using stratagems, the relic its not free but counts in the limit of the ones that you can have and the warlord trait is just one more to choose from. By spending 1 additional CP you can select a character of the spec det and give him the trait of that spec det, even if its not your warlord. So no free rules or anything. The initial CP spent is wasted if you dont use the stratagems or the relic or trait because it gives you nothing but a keyword (no rules, buffs) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/351930-the-hammer-on-vigilus/page/5/#findComment-5223268 Share on other sites
Are Verlo
It is worth reading the right stratagems ;-p And regarding field commander (the stratagem that gives you «an extra warlord») no two characters can have the same warlord trait. The Black Guard
I think so since it is still a turret weapon and it's basically just a upgraded battle cannon. Maxamato
That was also my first impression, but the relic replace the battle cannon rule wise. sairence
It's one of those things that is in all likelihood badly written. It would be ridiculous if it would not work for grinding advance. So let's hope for an FAQ soon to clarify that.
