Hi all, I've been happy to lurk and consume the content being posted here for a while but today I'd like to share my progress with my mini titans.

I went with Legio Vulturum because the fluff about Xana II is evil and mysterious! And because I wanted scope to do an original (and relatively easy) scheme to spend as little time as possible painting.

Im still finding bits and pieces to do and correct on my models, but the Warhounds are the most complete. Weathering and base to finish. Ululatum Belli and Tantum Sangunis.*

A couple of reavers are getting there, a bit of polishing off, weathering and finishing the bases to go.

Malum Cornix.*

Cruor Gelidus.*

And lastly my warlord, Interitus Infirmi*, who I've not really started yet.

Working on a Legio sigil at the moment so I can make my own decals, those forge world Malinax ones would have been just the ticket..

Absolutely loving the models and I've managed to have one game which was a blast. Cant wait for the scene to get bigger, and to wreck face for the Warmaster!

*Please forgive my nonsense latin, it will not be correct for sure but sounds cool.

Amazing work there - a very original but not at all easy colour scheme... I understand that the Legio Vulturum colours are supposed to be silver, white and black? But the marble effect is a great approach and very well executed!

Cant wait for Interitus Infirmi! :woot:

Welcome to the B&C and the AT forums!

Thanks very much all, super encouraging! The marble effect is aped from this WarhammerTV guide.

It took me a few attempts to get the knack for the veins appearing more natural and adding enough lahmian medium (after discovering why it's in the recipe at all), but it really is easier than it looks.

Not much progress on the painting front this weekend, but I did get a mini skirmish in with my girlfriend. The game turned out to be a bit anticlimactic for me by the end, with most shields down, a lot of weapons disabled, and no engine kills on either side- but apparently she'd had more fun than she expected, so there's that I guess. :teehee:

This time, I was really trying my best to finish everything I've got before making new purchases, but I couldn't resist a giant claw!

Just about to start on the veins for Interitus Infirmi, I'll try and get some pics of the stages.

So here we go, at the risk of all of these photos looking identical - Iprobably should have just used close-ups of the shoulders or something.

To start off with, the selected armour plates get a couple of coats of Vallejo Heavy Bluegrey (Celestra Grey), and then a couple more of Vallejo Ghost Grey (Ulthuan Grey); after which I line all the edges and recesses with Agrax Earthshade.

-First layer of the veins is Stonewall Grey (Administratum Grey) mixed with Lahmian medium. Vary up the thickness and experiment with wavy/jagged lines; it's ok for this stage to look naff.

-Next I add a thin inner line of Cold Grey (Dawnstone) mixed with Lahmian Medium to the veins. This will likely make them look worse than step 1, keep faith!

-In this stage I add very thin lines of Eshin Grey and Vallejo Heavy Grey mixed with Lahmian Medium to the thicker parts of the veins and at junctions/connections between them. Be a bit more sparing with these lines. The Heavy Grey is slightly green for a tiny bit of added colour but you could use another grey or taupe to vary up the marble.

-The last stage fixes everything! I go over all the veins with Stonewall Grey (Administratum Grey) mixed with a lot of Lahmian Medium, this will make the grey more transparent and will 'fuzz' the veins you've created and make them look more realistic, rather than grey lighting bolts. Spread this mix around so that the darker lines show through where needed.

It will definitely look like arctic camo until this stage; I concede that if you're better at the stage 1 lines than I am you could probably avoid this step.

The last step is to give it a coat of gloss varnish, but I haven't done that yet. I did have a go at some muzzle burn on the volcano cannons though!

Absolutely wonderful, I love it. Great step-by-step as well, thanks a lot.

Looks really cool - I would love to know where you got that baby-sized Land Raider? Awesome thing to have on the bases!

That is a venerable ancestor, seems like the first plastic epic Land Raider (there was also a metal one back then, I think the metal one even predates the plastic one, not sure though). You can sometimes find them on eBay (there are some currently listed, including a pack of 54 from a seller in Italy, prices are often steep), or in very old boxes if you were playing/collecting epic back in the old days.

That's pretty damn cool.

How do you get your "white" so smooth? Is it just multiple smooth coats?

Dallo

Yeah super thin coats. Also rather than white it is just very light grey which is way easier to work with! The other colours around are so dark I can get away with it.

Faithfully,

Master Ciaphas

When I found out about AT I got onto ebay bought a load of little epic scale space marine infantry and tanks. They may be a little more expensive now but there are other third party options too that look similar - like Vanguard Miniatures.

Putting these guys on the bases is really helpful for 'selling' the scale, and is way easier than making little trees etc.

  • 2 weeks later...

Time for a group photo! I think I've pretty much finished everything I'm going to do on these titans for now. When I'm braver I'll try and make some transfers. I'm not too happy with my pigment work on the feet so I will probably fiddle with that forever.

Now to have a mull and think about whether future engines will be for this Legio or if I should start a loyalist one, and which one it'll be. I'd love to paint some red so maybe Atarus or Metalica? But then there's the temptation to have three warlords, two reavers (plus new one) and four warhounds for to allow me to fill out every maniple we've got so far for the Gore Crows. In any case I may as well wait for Titandeath. Thanks for reading!
