Hobby New Year's Resolutions / This Year's Successes

Brother Mayhem

Recommended Posts

This year was actually really successful for me. I finished painting my Death Guard, painted an entire Nurgle Daemon army, completed converted and painted a Chaos Knight army, painted a Warhound Titan... converted a bunch of Dark Mechanicum models and subsequently painted them as well. Painted the Gellerpox Infected, converted up and painted a Pestigor Warband for INQ28 / Necromunda / Kill Team, painted my son's House Cadmus Knights and finally started an Adeptus Titanicus army.

My goal for 2019 is to base at least 75% of my 40K models. Bases are the bane of my existence but without a finished one the models look incomplete, so I need to finish what I've started. My priority is my Chaos Knights since there's so few of them so they rely so much on being 100% complete. Another goal is to finish my Legio Mortis / House Makabius Adeptus Titanicus army. After that, who knows? I can see the basing taking up most of my year and all of my sanity.

Yeah, I have to finish building 14 more Plague Marines, 3 knights, a Knight Armiger, then pick up a Daemon Prince and proper nurgle him up. After that, AoS Gitz and Beastclaw Raiders, then 40k will just be filling gaps in my Death Guard and painting them up until the Sisters of Battle release. I'd like to get and paint Mortarion, but I don't see me using him.

Much like the Death Guard themselves, I plan to stoically advance through the unpainted models for my army. I was able to complete 10 this year, so if I can meet or exceed that in 2019, that will be a big achievement for me.

I'm finally going to take the plunge and start airbrushing. I want to be proficient with it by the end of the year. My metric will roughly be me thinking 'I should airbrush that' and then being able to execute the hobby time with good consistent paint and minimal fanangling with my brush.

As far as painting goes, I'd like to paint up my Calth box so that can be played. I'll be running it as Raven Guard and Spectral Sicarii (homebrew) instead of UM and WB, my hobbying worked out that those groups make sense. I need to paint up 20 tacticals, a chaplain, and a contemptor.

After that I would like to get to ~800 points of my Spectral Sicarii painted up. There are local 650 point nights that I'd like to be able to go to with a bit of variety, finishing the Calth box will be a good start to that point total.

I want to build a couple of killteams, of which races I haven't decided yet, but leaning toward GSC and either DG or DW and a couple of killzones. An Orlock gang for munda. At least a patrol detachment each of BA, DA and DG. And Blages of Khorne for AoS, probably enough to have a varied warband for AoS Skirmish, will see how that game works after January's WD drops as the rules will be in that issue, but would like a small army. And finally a centrepiece model if some sort, either a leviathan dreadnought for either the BA or DA, or Skarrbrand for BoK or something else entirely. Also I want to play as much as I can in game systems I've mentioned.

For 2019 I aim to paint more than I buy.

Oh you sweet summer child... That's not how it works...

I actually managed to do that just fine ... considering that I painted only two characters and 2x5 Intercessors I obviously didn't buy much at all the past year tho. :D

This year I got all of my Adeptus Mechanicus painted up to scratch and while I'm not promising to leave it at what I have I will be turning my inner Techpriest/Mekboy's gaze upon my Ork army. I want to get the Dread mob part of the army finished and once I get the codex I'll be able to decide how to build my Battlewagons. After that I'm hoping to get most of my Knights finished.

I can be happy because I painted up a modelling project for a friend, finally integrated my airbrush properly into my toolset, even if I need to experiment with it more, it's saved me many a headache with consistent basecoats.

So far I have kept my B&C project logs up to date (though not active sadly since I've hopped between projects including some Age of Sigmar stuff). I haven't established an online portfolio yet but there's still a couple of days left in the year, right?

Revisions... For clarity?

I will not make any Hobby purchases in 2019 except what is unavoidably required to complete the following tasks... (mostly in the following order)

  • build and paint to "my standard" black templars 2000 point force and a 100pt killteam (overlapping duties for models encouraged) no later than immediately prior to the last weekend of April for "reasons" this is a moving target, as my list is subject to change
  • build and prime and start painting my "feudalworld Squats" almost done really (includes fully painting several dozen models so they can be attacked to ranking bases)
  • Build, prime start painting a "feudal world" army resident to any ecclesiastical monestary borrowing heavily the adeptus Soraritas "Fleur-de-lis" emblem. (oh god emperor this project is barely started and has already suffered setbacks)
  • build and paint enough of my Iron Warriors to play some games
  • build and paint enough Imperial guard to play some games
  • build and paint a small Ork army for biweekly game nights (rotating with my RPG group)some assembly done, so not bad
  • build and paint a small necron army for same... "enough" is already assembled and primed and it's an easy scheme!
  • build and paint a small genestealercult and companion tyranid force for same game nights...lots of sneakers and some bids built, GSC largely still on spru...
  • build and paint various chaos auxiliaries, beastmen, renegade guardsmen etc for above gamenights...

Clearly more tha I can accomplish... But NOT SPENDING MONEY is the real goal eh?

For 2019 I intend to dive back in and resume work on my Heresy era Word Bearers (More Choom!) as well as finally pop open all those boxes of Orks I've amassed and start assembling my Deathskulls army.

........I'm not even going to kid myself on anything getting painted in 2019 either, short of commissioning someone. *laughs*

Alright, I need almost support group levels of help on this one as I've been staring at the pale blue and white glow of the forgeworld website for the past hour now...

I, thusly, resolve to not buy any more Sons of Horus transfer sheets in order to make sure I don't go wildly out of control... again.

Hopefully, I would like to do the following:

Army wise:

Finish my 1000pt T'au army. (I'll post some pics ;) )

Start and finish a 1000pt Orcs and Goblins army.

And hopefully start and finish a 1000pt Space Marine army or... maybe a chaos army in the old hordes of chaos style, with all sorts of chaotic creatures in the mix.

Paint wise:

Generally improve my painting skill, I'd like to get to a Eavy Metal level this year following some tutorials. I've been getting close, I just need to learn a lot about blending, glazing, and most importantly patience. But I have a lot of eavy metal tutorials saved that I can follow, from old White Dwarf magazines.

Best of luck to all you guys :)

I finally got around to actually play a few games, and a single tournament this year.

Started Daughters of Khaine and Wanderers for AoS.

Returned to Blood Angels for 40k, after a stint with Dark Eldar.

Plans for the coming year include:

Finishing up a proper 2k points Blood Angels Army and roughing up the local area.

I would like to get a decent display case for my armies.

I want to get out of my shell and play more (on my way but backslid a little with Cowboy Simulator 2018 and a switch + smash brothers.)

I'm thinking a new display case would go nice with my new house... was planning to buy one, just came up with an idea for building a custom one.

I’ve felt pretty productive this year, having built and painted all this: 10 tactical marines (to finish off the 3rd company), a predator with two turrets, four spare dreadnought arms, a primaris captain and a servo-harness techmarine (both for ETL), three boltstorm aggressors, all the scenery from the KillTeam starter box, a squad of cult neophytes, the scenery from the munitorium KillZone, a squad of acolytes/metamorphs, and a broodlord (still working on that one).

For 2019, my plan is to paint my way through the GSC half of Tooth and Claw, acquire and paint a stormraven and a second stormtalon to make a small air-wing, and then texture base my marine army (of around 200 models).

Manage all that and I have a drop-pod and a squad of Grey Knight terminators on the shelf. But no rush there.

Last year my goal was to paint my Ultras first company, and several Knights. I ended up with one Knight mostly painted, about half the Ultras, but also painted about forty Lamenters and a ton of terrain, so I'm going to call it an ok year.

For 2019 my goal is to finish the Lamenters to about 3k pts to have some variety. I also want to finish my terrain addiction, as I have about 8 various Sector Mechanicus structures still needing painting, the Thermic Plasma Nexus bundle plus some more from the kill team SM killzone, plus the Munitorium killzone and about one and a half wall of Martyrs killzones. I have a terrain addiction but hope that it'll stop growing once it's painted. Especially as I don't have a gaming area at home so it's mostly just been for eventual display. :)

<p>In 2018 I will:
  • decrease spending on my plastic and resin crack habit per developed budget
  • decrease spending on paint, tools, and other hobby related items per developed budget
  • increase human interaction by making at least 150 posts to this forum
  • donate to this forum's annual fund raising effort per developed budget
  • learn at least three new painting techniques
  • complete at least two Imperial Fist unit choices for 30k from each catagory to the best of my ability
  • complete at least one archmagos and three unit choices from the 30k Ordo Reductor list to the best of my ability
  • complete at least four tanks, IF and/or Mechanicum to the best of my ability
  • spend more quality time with my airbrush

I'd call 2018 a darned good year. Spending in line with budget... check. Increase forum participation... check. Donate to forum fundraising... check. Learn three new painting techniques... well, at least I managed one. Complete the listed models... check. More quality time with my airbrush... check. I even managed to complete around 3200 points of Imperial Fists over 5 vows in ETL. (Which almost makes up for my abject failure in the previous one.)

In 2019 I will:

maintain hobby spending and donations within budget

increase forum participation, including writing three reviews

learn at least three new painting techniques

participate in at least three painting events

complete at least 4000 points to the best of my ability in this year's ETL for the glory of the AoD Loyalists

complete at least 3000 points of Imperial Fists to the best of my ability

complete at least 3500 points from the 30k Ordo Reductor list to the best of my ability

complete at least 2500 points of Solar Auxilia to the best of my ability

and I get bonus points if i paint up some more Evil Sunz

In 2018 I actually started playing some games, which was great and a good motivator to build and paint a bit more quickly.

For 2019, I'm aiming for the following:

> Build and paint a Novamarines Strikeforce.

> Build and paint warbands for each of the four chaos gods.

> Bring my built and painted Iron Hands up to 3000pts.

> Bring my built and painted Warriors of Mayhem up to 3000pts.

> Post my building/painting progress on the forum (and Instagram) at least once a week.

> Get more games in!

These goals should help expand my hobby skills, whilst giving me large enough forces to get some good games in. The community is a huge motivator, so posting my stuff up frequently will help keep me on track and hopefully provide some useful advice too.
