Competitive at low points?

Hello,

At my local game store we have monthly tournaments. Within the last few months the store owner has been lowering the point limit and codex limit. Last month we had a 1650. This month we are going for 1000.

So my question is, how competitive can we be? I heard talk of people bringing the Loyal 32 plus Knights, Custode bikes and CP battery, and Eldar smack down.

Can we compete against this sort of thing?

Any advice is welcome!

Thanks!

Deathwatch maybe.  Codex Marines, not a chance.  Marines are actually worse at low points imo.  Their points inefficiency is magnified even further when available resources are scarce.

how many dreadnoughts do you have

2 Leviathans - Stormcannons

2 Motris Contemptor Dreads - Lascannon or Kheres Assault Cannon

4 Venerable Dreadnoughts - Various loadouts

1 Contemtpor Dread - Kheres Assault Cannon plus Fist

1 Ironclad Dreadnought

1 Redemptor Dreadnought

Love me some Ironclads, and all the more with beta bolters. Hunter Killers are nice and cheap as well, and even though they're one offs, a big volley turn one costs peanuts and can make a big hole. A fully decked out pair at 1k points...ehhhh maybe not? Still, for style points 2 Ironclads and an LRC just look dead sexy :teehee:

Now that is something I can get behind! Sadly I just don't have the LRC, just the Achilles lol Though the Redemptor plus Repulsor looks nice with the bolter beta rule

If you your tournament uses latest beta rules with bolters and CA2018 SM are better now, not meta-defining but better anyway.

Last week we had 1000pt points tournament (with forge world minis banned) here in Kyiv with 20 people on board I took second place (first one went to guy with Catellan knight and IG detachment) with this list:

++ Battalion Detachment +5CP (Imperium - Space Marines) [64 PL, 1000pts] ++

++ Total: [64 PL, 1000pts] ++

Note that IH chapter tactics allows Redemptor to move and shoot without penalties (for CP) while increasing his surviveability that is quite good on 1000pts games.

Cap on bike gives you some flexibility to think whom to boost - bikers (which are great after cost drop and good at kiting with new bolter rules) or help redemptor.

Lieutenant helps 2 dreads shooting, do not forget to activate their aura for reroll of 1s if cap is not near. Techmarine simply helps to keep dreads alive (they do have fnp as well due to being IH). Also army-wide fnp really helps on low-point tournaments as those few extra wounds can save a day.

As our tournament was quite mission-heavy bikes helped a lot to compete with other fast factions.

They're forgotten a lot but a TFC can be really useful, especially at lower points. With how important scoring is being able to bog down key scorers with Tremor shells at the right time is clutch, assuming you aren't playing against Eldar. The Gunner being able to repair backfield Dreadnoughts is just a cherry on it.

And they dropped in points in Chapter Approved, so they're under 100 points a pop now.

Hmm, perhaps Scout Bike squads?  Fairly cheap for what they can do, with some much needed mobility that a small Marine army is otherwise likely to lack?

The most bang per buck I can think of is a Captain, Ven Dread, 2 Thunderfires, 2 Scout Bike squads, 3 Scout squads, 2 Sternguard squads.  A touch under 1k with room to fiddle around.  Largely a shooty force really, but that's C:SM for ya. :dry.:

Also haven't got any Primaris in that list, either, which may not be great in the long term.

I did come up with a list, albeit not as competitive as I would like. It's more geared to a doubles than solo, but I enjoy it.

Captain - Storm Shield, Power Axe

Techmarine - Storm Bolter, Power Axe

Servitors (Left over points for Vanguard)

4x Company Vets - Combi Plasma x4, Storm Shield x4

4x Company Vets - Combi Plasma x4, Storm Shield x4

Thunderfire Cannon

Leviathan Dreadnought - x2 Stormcannon Arrays

Razorback - Twin Assault Cannon

Razorback - Twin Assault Cannon

It defiantly won't be winning any competitive games, but I think it could be a good supplement for a doubles.

Don’t try to compete for damage, compete for victory conditions.

Survive and take the objectives. Do some sacrifices. Fight only when you have to to reduce your exposure.

For 1000pts competitive, I like my Primaris Captain + 19 Bolt Rifle Intercessors + 2 Repulsor with TwinLas/both Onslaught Cannons/Stormbolters all around.

Choose whether to deploy in or out depending on victory conditions, ensure infantry superiority with the Repulsors, avoid fighting with the Intercessors until late game.

Use terrain to hide from Knights.

If you prefer to think of competitive about comparing the size of your bolts with other guys, go for a Knight as it’s got the best dmg per pt and survivability per point with the stratagems.

A Knight can easily take on and destroy 2x its points, more with stupid opponents.

There is no better option currently that I found.

If you’re looking to win with strategy, maneuvering and thinking, build a list around objective supremacy at Turn 5 and 6. Including but not limited to :

- Enough objective secured for late game and

- Decent ability to fight on objectives or

- Decent ability to shoot down objective holders or threats or

- Decent movement/deployment ability to sneakily take objectives or

- Decent distraction to occupy your opponent for 3+ turns while taking fire away from objective secured
