“Skull and motto” / decorative scrolls on armour

You know, the scrolls with supposed writing on shoulder pads.

What do you put on them?

Are there any hints in GW sources?

Insignium Astartes (p. 62) speaks of “a multitude of uses and meanings” and successive codices are quite similar in their wording. But the examples on images are always placeholders, like “Imperium”, “Ultra”, “Ultramarines” etc.

Any ideas?

They can be used for pretty much anything. The vague guidance allows you considerable freedom to use them in any way you find suitable for your Chapter. The skull itself is a symbol of devotion to the Emperor, but it is also a symbol of leadership (often being a symbol indicating the rank of [brother] Sergeant), records of valor, etc. You can use any motto that you feel is appropriate - the battle-brother's name, a name significant to the Chapter (such as the Chapter's name, Chapter world, etc.), some quality (valor, honor, etc.), the Imperium, etc.

The vagueness and freedom was what I was afraid of.

But I see some good input here.

What would you consider a good idea for a Captain to have written on his armour?
