Named Iron Father

I kinda hope that he won't be available as generic Primaris Techmarine for other chapters but he honestly doesn't look too out of the ordinary to not have a double purpose. A shoulder pad is easily replaced, the cyberarm could be a separate bit as well but wouldn't hurt if isn't since other Marines use those as well and he's a Techmarine after all ... and the rest of the model is pretty generic Primaris/Techmarine stuff.

Still an awesome model and I'm glad for IH players to finally get some love!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH! FINALLY! NOW IS THE TIME, BROTHERS! STAND AND REJOICE IN FERRUS’S NAME!

...sorry, I don’t know what came over me there. He looks awesome, and Primaris or not, I think his fluff and armor can be retconned to being a torso, some organs, his head, and augmetics, meaning he didn’t need to be Primaris sized to be armored so.

I’ll be getting two, thankyouverymuch.

Okay, from a purely aesthetic view:

It's a generally good looking model. The proportions are good, it conveys unit type and Chapter well. There are enough gubbins that it has character without feeling overwhelmed or busy.

However.

The platform boots were an odd choice. If that crane thing is supposed to be a servo-arm then it's an epic fail; there's no way that has crushing power equivalent to a power fist, and it can't be aimed at anything not straight down at his feet. I've also never been a fan of the Tactical Wreckage, but it's fairly understated so it's not a big issue for me in this case.

Overall, I like the model despite the fact it's Primaris. Whether I actually buy one is largely dependent on the rules. It looks like he has a heavy bolter and a plasma cutter - and a holstered pistol - so he won't seem too out of place supporting a gunline while repairing Dreadnoughts and tanks.

Finally.

Finally something worthy for Iron Hands, after so many editions of nothing. The model itself is good - many nods to the AdMech model line, maybe not as many bionics as some would have it, but fitting well together. Now my only question is, do I paint it up in my AdMech primaris scheme, or all black? I still have gorgon terminators and immortals on the way...

And it's definitely Iron Hands - our boltstorm gauntlet is actually a heavy bolter. :biggrin.:

I don't think it's a plasma cutter. That looks exactly like the AdMech breacher arc claw.

I like everything apart from the claw-crane arm. Echoing Iron Father Ferrum's comments, what exactly is it meant to do / how is it meant to work?

That said, I wonder if the claw-game attachment is meant to be a nod to an element of the Iron Father fluff? There seems to be a bit of a push in the recent fluff to differentiate Iron Fathers as just 'chaplain+techmarine', having them as being driven by the search for archeotech, rather than just glorified battlefield mechanics/engineers. Perhaps the little claw-crane is designed to allow the character to extract valuable and lost technology from hard to reach places?

Still - very happy to see this.

That's not what Iron Fathers are depicted in the fluff as being - currently, they are figures of senior leadership within the Chapter, sometimes promoted from Captains, though not necessarily, with some (such as Stronos) promoted from lower in the ranks who have been earmarked for greatness. They are completely separate from Chaplains, with the Reclusiam a completely separate entity to the Iron Council. Although they operate in a command position, they have full Techmarine training, spending the prerequisite 30 years on Mars where they receive the implants necessary to sit on the Iron Council.

Sorry, that badly phrased on my part due to excited and quick typing  :laugh.: - this is the biggest and best IH-related news I've read since 2013 :laugh.:  . I know that the current lore doesn't have Iron Fathers as the old/original fluff (which was, in simplified terms, 'techmarine + chaplain hybrid). Going from Wrath of Iron (and the short story Flesh, which preceeded it), the Clan Raukaan supplement fluff, some of the Heresy lore, and one of the recent novels (Voice of Mars? I can't remember), the Iron Fathers mentioned all seem to have a bit of a recurring theme of 'go out, find [technology]'.

What I meant was that in my eyes, this model looks a little less like a battlefield mechanic and repair expert (techmarine) and more like someone who's going hunting for technology.

Well, if we're only ever going to get one named character, then I'd definitely prefer the Master of the Forge to anyone else, even the chapter master (especially since that's SUPPOSED to be a title that is only granted to deal with imminent threats, not perpetually attached to one guy as has been the case with Stronos).

I don't get the complaints that he "looks like a Primaris", guys, Primaris are going to replace all marines. Jesus Goodwin says it straight out in Voxcast. Accept it and move on already. :smile.:

I mean I do believe they are the way going forward, but it's wrong that Jes Goodwin said so. Nobody from GW anywhere said straight out that Primaris are going to replace all Marines so far.

I keep trying to employ Iron Hands logic and not expect anything beyond this one named character release for Iron Hands... and I keep failing.

It just doesn't seem like something GW does these days, unless the model in question is some sort of store or event exclusive. They tend to coordinate general-market model releases as part of bigger waves or in sync with campaign books which include rules expansions benefiting the model in question (see Calgar and Vigilus Defiant). So I keep circling back around to thinking that Iron Hands may indeed be part of either a box set or a new campaign book or at least have a Primaris upgrade kit on the way.

Speaking of the Calgar release, I wouldn't complain if they followed suit here and teamed Feirros up with a couple of Helfathers as his honor guard.

I hadn't noticed the point about the claw until it was mentioned here, but yeah, it's an odd design choice. It looks a lot like it's raised/lowered via a simple cable, i.e. it really -does- look like it operates like a grabber claw in an arcade machine. Toy Story memes aside, I'm struggling to think of any circumstances where that would be any better than a standard servo-arm. I guess technically he could feasibly reach further into gaps, but only straight down, and the thing's pretty bulky too.

It could very well be a box set with Iron Hands on one side but that doesn't necessarily mean new models or units in addition to the named character.

It's hard to predict anything though, considering the only new named character we got in 8th so far has been Calgar++ which came as part of a campaign (also without other new models except for the Victrix Guard as the Vanguard Primaris were part of a different box set).

I think the most reasonable to expect, if it's more than just a random named character release, would be a box set with the Primaris units we already know and an Iron Hands upgrade sprue. I don't think we'll see another big-ish campaign this soon so it won't be like the Calgar release and we don't have anything else to compare it to. ^^
