MithrilForge
Iv'e been watching with Interest the new Contrast paint and weighing up what to actually use it with i.e. balancing speed with production and quality ... Ork Boyz was the main idea from this ...i have not started my ork army propa due to this daunting task... getting the basic troops done is probably the biggest hurdle for an Ork player since the rest of the models are sooo fun to paint it's easy to pump out some cool vehicles etc ... I was thinking they will have an Ork type skin colour and the black looks dark grey to me (which i don't mind their pants being that colour) and there's most likely a nice couple of browns for leather in there too...the only standard paints would be leadbelcher and maybe some kid of brass/gold for ammo feeds and bionics etc... This will speed things up immensely for ork boyz.... thoughts?, idea's?... toaae
Honestly, if I didn't already have a horde painted in standard colors, I would be awfully tempted to do orks using the contrast paints. Flesh and fabrics seem to be where the contrast paints shine, and ork boyz are 90% flesh-and-fabric. I bet one of the colors will do the teeth/mouth well, and I bet dry-brushing leadbelcher over the black contrast will do the weapons well. Also, you don't have to do all black pants. I'm sure there will be several suitable colors for variety. DeRome90
As Toaae know, I'm currently thinking of participating in the upcoming ETL for Orks (or Chaos). These contrast paints would be a great help if I start with Orks. But it would be intersting if the new contrast paint would be so much different (in terms of color effect) then the other paints. It would look kinda strange if the Orks you painted with the new colors does not fit with the (old) painted Orks. oh, and thank you mithrilforge... now I have restrain myself to not post a meme regarding colored clothing, which would be offtopic Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/355958-contrast-paint-and-ork-boyz/#findComment-5313820 Share on other sites
Warhead01
I've seen lots and lots of models painted with washes and inks and I have a strong feeling that these new contrast paint series is basically just that. Think high pigment washes. Will it make painting large model count armies faster? Sure why not. On a side note if you are interested in painting models with washes I would recommend looking into what you need to make your own washes. Ink, matte medium and water. I haven't had to make any in a long time now so I may be missing something from the mix. One of the strong points to making your own is that you can control the strength and shade of the wash and the costs. There are tutorials on like I remember one by APJ Less that I followed easily. I think I would be excited about the contrast paints or painting with washes and inks for a new project as nearly all my hundreds of boys are already painted to a nice standard. But maybe Nitz or Eldars of some kind. Anything with a lot of flesh to cover. Again there are tutorials and other painting videos where people are painting some very nice models with just Inks and washes, Contrast paints will just be another tool in the toolbox. I'm how will they cover large flat surfaces ? Thankfully Orks don't have a whole lot of that to worry about. I have even less of an idea what these contrast paints are now that I have seen this video.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cIEtAlMSndQ Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/355958-contrast-paint-and-ork-boyz/#findComment-5313968 Share on other sites
MithrilForge
a couple coats of that warp lightning colour might be great for Ork Skin ...one coat for gretchin two coats for boyz and a third diluted coat for Nobs ... tvih
I really wish I hadn't gone with black basecoats at this point. Can't use washes or contrast paints on that. I tried washes for the skin on a few test pieces but I couldn't make that work despite seeing others achieve good results... but I might've been able to do the clothes. I do have a lot of black clothes by design but even so. And my chosen skin paint scheme would've worked just as well on a bright base as it did on a black one. I do have my resin tankbustas with a silver basecoat so I might try washes or maybe even a contrast paint on them, but then again it'd make them look different from the rest. I guess I'll see how it works out. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/355958-contrast-paint-and-ork-boyz/#findComment-5314536 Share on other sites
MithrilForge
@tvih -they’re going to have paint on base coat paints so maybe the black undercoat may not prove so disastrous just yet. I have seen that they have a wash called Ork flesh , that sounds quite promising!! MithrilForge
This looks promising, if that ork burna boy is done completely using contrast then this will massively speed up the painting of all my Cannon fodder ...er i mean't precious Boyz Cheers, Mithril Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/355958-contrast-paint-and-ork-boyz/#findComment-5319665 Share on other sites
Magos Takatus
I don't know what part of the Orks I'd want to shortcut to be honest. I prefer to vary the skin tones quite a bit so I'd be mixing in other colours and washes anyway. My camo is the defining part of my army so I can't shortcut that. Perhaps leather pouches or the grey trousers would be a good start. Why do I make horde army paintjobs so complicated? :p That said, that Ork Boy looks pretty good considering. It's going to make starting new armies a lot easier but for someone that likes to keep their army fairly consistent this is quite the dilemma. :P Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/355958-contrast-paint-and-ork-boyz/#findComment-5319744 Share on other sites

That's still at least 7 colors. However, I am all for anything that helps beginners get their Orks on the table. I know it isn't easy. This may well save them a lot of time. MithrilForge
i think little annoying things like straps, pipes(looking at necron gauss feed pipes ) boots, gloves and some metal parts etc will benefit from this... i'll definitely have to see how the skin tone works...perhaps a drybrush afterwards with a couple different colours to make a noticeable difference ... tvih
I'll probably wait to see what kind of results other get, but currently I'm thinking of transitioning to the contrasts for my ork boyz and any completely unpainted models after all. Seeing as how the "tabletop boyz" have skins & weapons done, I can just rip off the heads and arms (they're glued with small dabs of superglue), re-spray the torsos with either Wraithbone or perhaps some sort of gray (I'm not sure if it'll really make a difference which?) and then do the clothing with contrasts. Armor plates and metallics and such would then be done separately. I'm not sure how much faster this would make things, but what I do know my current method certainly is so damn slow even though for clothing it's just the chosen color for that shirt/pants/whatever, possibly a wash and then some highlighting. FlamingDeth
This should be interesting. I've wanted white skinned/monochromatic orks for a while and quickly found that beyond my ability. I'm wondering if these might be the ticket to making them look decent, I'll definitely be doing a tester or two. Kierdale
I intend to give Contrast a go for all of my Orks but for vehicles. It should cut down painting time considerably. For some flesh-tone variation I’ll probably get Ork Flesh for my Snakebites (majority of the army), Warplightning for Grots, and perhaps Dark Angels Green for my Bad Moons (the darker green will contrast better with yellow armour. I can also give it a go on my Mentor Legion). I wonder if the whiter or greyer spray will be better? MithrilForge
Mix it up, get some subtle varied tones on them. I was wondering about this very idea...but in a different way what if the bone undercoat was used as the main spray and you did some light zenithal spray work with the grey?... ...or vice versa i'm not sure yet what each colour will provide... it may make a difference...who knows? Warhead01
Might also consider how to layer these onto skin as well, having see the plague cultist being painted in a youtube video it looks like you can use several of these colors on top of each other. So, green, browns and yellows may be another way to go. I can't say I have seen these colors mixed on a pallet yet just kinda blended on to the models.
