Mr.Shrimp98
Hello all, I am brand new to the hobby and found myself drawn to necrons for my first army. That being said I might have jumped the gun running out and buying models before knowing what actually works. I currently own the necron start collecting box (overlord,12 warriors, 5 immortals, 3 scarabs, and annihilation barge/command barge) , a doom scythe, a cryptek, and an additional box of 5 immortals. My group of friends that I will be playing with are starting with 500pt armies but plan on expanding to 1500pt as soon as financially possible for the members. The group currently consist of Ultra Marines, Death Watch, Space Wolves, and Tyranids in case that helps with potential advise. With all the context out of the way, I have rough idea for what I want for this 1500pt army but would like to see what more experienced players have to say. If there is anything off or in need of improvement I would be happy to hear. As it stands Battalion Detachment: Dynasty- Sautekh HQ- Lord (Warscythe), Overlord (Warlord, Veild of Darkness, Hyperlogical Strategist, Resurrection Orb, Warscythe) Troops- Immortals x8 (Tesla Carbine), Immortals x7 (Tesla Carbine), Warriors x10 Elites- C'tan Shard of the Deceiver Flyer- Doom Scythe Outrider Detachment: Dynasty- Sautekh HQ- Cryptek (Chronometron) Fast Attack- Canoptek Scarabs x3, Canoptek Wraiths x3 (Particle Casters), Destroyers x3 Point- 1,496 Also as I am new to the forums I was not sure if that was better suited here in in the Necrontyr Army List. If the latter is true I will happily relocate. Thank you for your time, Mr. S Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/356226-new-player-army-advise/ Share on other sites
Tyriks
Welcome! I'd recommend not picking Sautekh. That Dynasty Code will really only benefit your Doom Scythe. Tyr13
Id drop the 10 man warrior squad, replace it with either more immortals or increase the squad size. Numbers are the primary selling point of warriors, if you dont use them, youre handicapping yourself. As for Sautekh... its a personal choice. There are worse options. :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/356226-new-player-army-advise/#findComment-5322101 Share on other sites
Tyriks
Additionally, I'd say instead of one unit of 7 Immortals and one unit of 8, make one unit of 10 and one of 5. Then MWBD will have more effect because 10 guys will benefit instead of only 8. That also means that unit will be slightly more likely to survive long enough to use RP. Mr.Shrimp98
Well I certainly appreciate the advice so far. I would have liked to respond earlier but I’ve been traveling. So the changes I’ve considered so far is changing dynasty to Mephrit, warlord trait to Thrall of the Silent King, and drop the casters on the wraiths to get two units of 10 immortals and bump the warriors up to 17. So as stands Battalion Detachment: Dynasty- Mephrit HQ- Lord (Warscythe), Overlord (Warlord, Veild of Darkness, Thrall of the Silent King, Resurrection Orb, Warscythe) Troops- Immortals x10 (Tesla Carbine), Immortals x10 (Tesla Carbine), Warriors x17 Elites- C'tan Shard of the Deceiver Flyer- Doom Scythe Outrider Detachment: Dynasty- Mephrit HQ- Cryptek (Chronometron) Fast Attack- Canoptek Scarabs x3, Canoptek Wraiths x3, Destroyers x3 Point- 1,492 Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/356226-new-player-army-advise/#findComment-5322379 Share on other sites
Mr4Minutes
Just my two cents to add to the great advice. Consider a staff on the lord instead of war scythe. He’s probably going to be standing around buffing rather then getting stuck in CC. At that point level I don’t see enough to benefit from the deceivers redeployment ability. Ie: large threats in the face. Consider the nightbringer for some good CC or if your opponents allow, proxy him in as a transcendent C’tan. I really like the transcendent C’tan because he can get 2 bonus abilities( I think 5 out of 6 are useable and most 4 are great) and makes a great threat charging up the board. I’d drop the outrider and bundle some of the units into the battalion with the intent of boosting their model count. 3 destroyers are easily killed and not a great threat. The wraiths are survivable, but 3 is not going to give you a punch. So if you consolidate into a single battalion you can try to boost their model count. Try for 6 destroyers in the unit to take advantage of RP and strats and boost the wraiths to at least 5. I know you probably won’t be able to do both, but Necrons benefit most from full squads so I’d try to max one squad rather then take both. (A cryptek with the cloak can keep up with moving destroyers) Scarabs I’m squads of 4-5 are good screen units and harassers. The 1 cp strat to blow one up for MW is actually really good. Additional note. If you keep the outrider make it Novokh instead of mephrit. None of those units really benefit from the -1 ap but they all benefit from the reroll failed hit rolls (especially the wraiths and scarabs) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/356226-new-player-army-advise/#findComment-5322447 Share on other sites
NTaW
Welcome to the B&C Mr.Shrimp! Always happy to have another Necron player on the forum :tu: In addition to saying +1 to what you're reading so far I'll add that if you want your Doom Scythe to run as Sautekh you can play it in an Auxiliary Detachment for -1CP. This is pretty much the only way I play mine, in a Mephrit/Novokh list as well, so that it ignores the penalty for shooting the death ray and stays that tiny bit more relevant. Mr.Shrimp98
So first I must thank everyone for being very kind and sharing some great advice so far. I have a good feeling about where this army is going. So this time around I did move the doom scythe to its own auxiliary detachment to help make it a little more effective. I also did absorb the outrider detachment into the battalion detachment. I decided to drop the lord and a couple warriors for some points to increase unit size (would really appreciate feed back on the cut list because I’m not entirely sure it was smart). As much as I like the idea of destroyers I went for more wraiths as they seem to be a bit better for what I want. Then I switch the battalion to Novokh and Deceiver to Nightbringer. I could be looking at this wrong but this list feels like the cryptek will run the more aggressive part of my force and the overlord will defend and support the shooters/back line troops. So as stands Battalion Detachment: Dynasty- Novokh HQ- Cryptek (Canoptek Cloak), Overlord (Warlord, Veild of Darkness, Thrall of the Silent King, Resurrection Orb, Warscythe) Troops- Immortals x10 (Tesla Carbine), Immortals x10 (Tesla Carbine), Warriors x15 Elites- C'tan Shard of the Nightbringer Fast Attack- Canoptek Scarabs x4, Canoptek Wraiths x5, Destroyers x4 Auxiliary Support Detachment: Dynasty- Sautekh Flyer- Doom Scythe Point- 1,500 Thanks again, Mr. S Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/356226-new-player-army-advise/#findComment-5322524 Share on other sites
Mr4Minutes
Looks good. You will have a tough time taking on T8 models (most Necron lists do) so you may need to play more to the objectives if you play a tank heavy army. Good luck on your first games and let us know how they go! Claws and Effect
One thing of note: If you like the idea of using special characters that have abilities not available to regular HQ, then Sautekh may be worth taking another look at, as they have the most to choose from. I wouldn't necessarily run your whole list as Sautehk, but a detachment of them might be useful. Plus you can stick your Doom Scythe in it and gain a command point instead of having it cost you one. MithrilForge
hey Mr.Shrimp98, Your new list looks solid, you will over time find what you like to play and don't play...this can only happen from many games it's not from being an armchair warrior... What you have chosen is a good start and will do well if played well... as i said, time and games will reveal to you your favourite units...when that happens, start to look at other dynasties and special characters that work to your strengths and joys(you should never play something you don't enjoy) but for now you look to be off to a good start also Novokh = I myself love large units of warriors and large units of Destroyers...i'm a bit old school Good Luck!, Cheers, Mithril Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/356226-new-player-army-advise/#findComment-5324971 Share on other sites
