So how long before GW retires the non-Primaris range?

You can’t play your Silver Skulls until 021.M31 and then after that you’re good to go. Luckily the very popular Horus Heresy game will still continue to produce models for those chapters and the 8th Edition Marine Rules cover their tabletop presence.

That wouldn't be the Heresy, that would be the Scouring. And we DO NOT know that FW will do that. They may turn into a specialist game only operation(meaning Blood Bowl, Titanicus, etc).

Do I think they would be dumb not to do the Scouring? Yes. But GW and FW both make plenty of dumb decisions all on their own.

I really wish that would have just been like so...um......here’s a new mark of armor MKX and also were just re scaling the range ‍♂ I know Chaos aren't physically as primaris big but everyone seemed to love that approach other than DV the chaos is new(updated) armor and theyre bigger.

I really don't understand why they didn't do this. It's pretty much exactly what they did when they moved from the old 25mm base Terminators to the then-new 40mm base versions. I remember reading an article in White Dwarf about the redesign. The new models were still Terminators, not Neo-Terminators, despite looking a LOT more imposing.

It would make sense if they released both the Great Crusade and the Scouring, combine it with Heresy and instead of calling it The Age Of Darkness: The Hours Heresy, just call it The Age Of Darkness.

In the same way Flames of War takes WWII and divides it into early, mid, and late war games, AoD could do the same. The same overarching rules, but each era is self contained with its own points values, themes and armies, ie; a crusade army can’t play against a Scouring army. This system works well for Flames of War.

Or gw will focus on current timeline, potentially with new classic marine releases on the way, but potentially not as well.

Horus heresy releases aren't 40k releases. Some of the models are interchangeable, but not all.

Raldoron isn't a 40m release, he is a 30k release, one that can in theory be used as a counts as for a captain if you want, but he still isn't a 40k marine release. The mk4 marine kit isn't a 40k release, it was a 30k release that can be used as something from 40k etc. Its a bit disingenuous to say otherwise.

They're classic marines though, so they do count as that. They just aren't an indication, one way or another, of support or lack thereof for classic marines in the future of 40k.

All the above being said? I do still think we will see more classic marine stuff eventually, but I could see it being another few years before we see it (excluding possible limited editions).

That being said, I wont be unhappy if we get them eventually and they follow the proportions of deathwatch and the recent heroes releases.

On another note, regular marines are never going away.

Warhammer 40,000 is not a tabletop war game, only part of it is that.

It’s an Intellectual property that spans several mediums. Video games, books, comics, miniatures, toys, and now tv series.

You do not take one of the main and most familiar aspects of an IP, and scuttle it.

Regular marines will always be there so people who are familiar with Space Marines outside the wargame can start playing with what was shown to them in other mediums.

Sometimes we forget that this thing is now much bigger than just the wargame. We’re only a part of it, and I think that’s awesome!

The Mark 3 and 4 kits are tactical squads. It says it on the tin. They come with all the options to make them tactical squads. The Chaos Blood Reavers and Orruks all came out for a different system of a different game and can be mixed into units from the main system. Similarly armies as recently as the chaos marine release have show integrated mark 3 and four bits in white dwarf. So clearly GW very much feels the kits aren’t exclusively heresy.

Yep, Mark 3 and 4 squads are really both 30k/40k as they can be used functionally as both in both games.

Kind of like the Thunderhawk model the other way around. It started off as a 40k model before the heresy was even a thing, but is is dual use for both 40 and 30 ks.

Large amounts of 30k models can be used as 40k models with no modification. And vice versa. The two lines are intrinsically linked and highly interchangeable.

Very true. And the first official series will have classic marines

Very true. And the first official series will have classic marines

Very true, not to mention the fact that Eisenhorn takes place pre Gathering Storm.

Man, I really hope both of those shows kick ass.

Yeah, I thought that about Fantasy.

(Edit: I think a Primaris is close enough to a Firstborn that anyone outside of the hobby who is aware of what a space marine is would probably not think they are something different.)

Y’all think GW could have just released marines bigger ‘to fix the scale issue’ ... or they could release cooler more powerful marines with better rules, which everyone needs to buy. I doubt anyone has got away with proxying firstborn as primaris!

And ‘soulless’ is the way forward, again, look at the Stormcast Eternals. I think GW has forgotten that our armies do need to be ‘accessible’.

Yes, because all model ranges from fantasy are gone and you can’t use them and can’t get them any more *sarcasm*

And I’m sorry, I think you’re wrong about people outside of the tabletop game. They’re not that ignorant.

I think you'll find people really are oblivious to the Warhammer hobby outside of it. Trust me, in my profession I talk to many such people and they couldn't tell you what a Space Marine is.

In what, the general population? Then you can say that about anything really. You can find that most people don’t now what a Jedi is, or Thanos, or whatever. But I’m not talking about those people.

Im taking about the people outside the hobby that know of the 40k IP, be it though Video Games or other whatever.

Everyone that knows 40k outside the tabletop game knows what a space marine is.

Everyone knows that look.

And another thing I have to ask is; is GW really motivated to introduce Primaris elsewhere as a replacement?

Primaris were introduced into the tabletop game because; one, they’re bigger and more aesthetically appealing to some, and two, they are a good justification to introduce and sell new SM models.

These things don’t matter in video games for example. A pixel is a pixel on the screen.

They’re just ink in books and comics.
