So how do you equip your Captain? I have previously used the Lysander model, appropriately painted of course, but the recent price jump on thunder hammers and the change to the Shield Eternal relic have me shopping around for a replacement.

Relic Blade might be the way to go now. 9 pts, no penalty to hit.

+2 str means wounding most non-vehicles on 3's (and some light vehicles on 4) and heavy vehicles on 5.

-3 AP (-4 AP in assault doctrine) = enough pen to get the job done.

d3 damage is meh, but hey, that's why it's only 9 pts.

Another possibility I'm considering is the oft overlooked power maul.

+2 str

-1 AP (-2 AP in assault doctrine)

only 1 damage but also only 4 pts.

I never ran a TH Captain, guess I still won't :P I like mine running around with the Burning Blade or Axe of Medusa, usually with a plasma pistol. I've also used a Relic Blade if I wanted a different relic as it's solid for the points and makes his punches hurt.

I generally don't have a great deal of combat going on in my armies, so the Captain needs to ensure he hits hard as a counter. With plenty of Dreads to do the heavy smashing this usually means the Captain needs to be a blender for elite infantry and the like. The exception is when I run my Cataphractii Captain with combi-melta and chainfist (infinite ammo combi-melta as standard now) for when I want a brick who will unbrick things  He's always been good for tackling some of the tougher foes.

I don't expect this to change with the new codex, though I only got it yesterday. As an addition I think the Teeth of Terra is very good now, so if you have a relic spot free a great choice for a budget Captain to slap some xenos and heretics about (and all the more with the Assault Doctrine!).

JP Captain with burning blade would be pretty good. With proper WL traits (i.e. sword of the imperium), I can get 6 attacks on the charge at Str6, D2, and AP-5 (-6 in assault doctrine!!). Very killy, and you can give him a storm shield if you'd like to improve survivability (I have a plasma pistol but that's hard-modeled on so for better or worse I can't change that).
