Had a go with the new Valejjo metallics, which I have to say are some of the best I have ever used - here is a Crusade-era War Hound

Very nice! I’d better see if they do a dark red. I bought Scale 75 Garnet Alchemy and it was nothing like the picture. My Word Bearer plasma squad is completely bodged and I’m going to have to strip or spray over them if I can find a match for what’s in my head. Or they will have to defect to another legion …IMG_5454.thumb.jpeg.345aa8e5ecbe9f7e593d80933378f88a.jpeg

@LameBeard - this is from the Goonhammer review of the paints. Ruby Red I believe. I have to say they are some of the nicest metallics I have ever used. I wouldn't go quite as far as saying they are the step forward the Contrast/Speed paints were to general army painting, as metallics aren't used so much, but they are very good. Might be worth a try even if just to rescue a botch job!

Thanks @Pacific81 - looks better but still a bit brighter than I was thinking, I wanted something more like metallic red wine. Any suggestions appreciated gang - I might have to suck it up and pay the extra for Turbodork.

Sorry that was just an example of a red (which was probably more suited to Thousand Sons), they do darker ones too I believe

What a great range. There must be one that would work!

Scratch that, I misread the colour chart. Spilled ink in spoiler.

Spoiler

There are 20 base colours in Vallejo new metallics, plus highlight/shade and airbrush versions. The reds are Forge Red (similar to what I have, a sort of autumn leaves tinge), Ruby Red (close to the classic toffee apple) and Crimson Magenta (too pink for my needs).  So Turbodork still looking closer with Red  Queen (but maybe not dark enough?), Spicy meatball (maybe too meaty?) or Box Wine (seems unexpectedly brownish?). But v expensive once I add thinner and postage, hence still looking for options.

I tried shifting my Word Bearers with a coat of Voluptious Pink (closest Contrast paint I could see in the shop to Khorne Red). But it failed because (a) does actually have a touch of pink, and (b) I didn’t do thin coats properly, so killed the metallic on at least 3 out of 5. Very unusual finish now that is neither matte, gloss, satin nor metallic. I wouldn’t know how to describe it. Maybe a bit like brushed metal.

Amazing work @Smoke Frog, I am really enjoying following this project, the diorama the best bit so far - gotta love that little maw painted on a beaky!

First two squads for a smaller force of Iron Warriors I'd like to Count-As Primaris if I'd like to try 10th or 11th edition:

Mk.III Armour will be used as Gravis Armour, while Mk.II will signify Tacticus.

Next for this force will be  Heavy Support Squad with Multi-Meltas and Dreadnought converted out of a Imperialis Warhound to look like ye olde Space Crusade Dreadnought.

PS: Is my signature showing? On mobile so can't tell.

It's always great to see people clean up Plague Marines.
