Getting back to the hobby bench after some time, and finally finished off a SA Malcador that has become one of my favourite completed miniatures ever, I think.

First time using weathering pigments as well.

Some detail shots here

I've decided to take a bash at an expeditionary fleet force. I'm starting small with thirteen Custodes to use as allies for the two Solar Auxilia Battle Group boxes I have sat collecting dust. I'm going with second edition and hopefully will get two transports for them. I quite like the idea of a small force of Custodes being sent off on a special mission.

Here's the first five. I'm using parts from the old and new kits, to be honest the new one sucks because it is such a pain in the backside to work with. I'm going old school no cloaks which means I have to shave off the cloak area on the shoulders. I'm going for a mix of the old bare heads, warden heads and Custodian heads which fit quite well with a tiny bit of trimming. I want them to look as individual as possible. The Shield Captain is center and has a sheathed paragon blade with two arms from the Warden kit. Still got a ton of work to do.

The guy on the left is having the foot resculpted because it's cut off to fit the cloak. it's very rough at the moment, partially because I'm still playing around with it but mostly because I'm old and my eyesight is terrible!  I've made an indentation for the little ball part on the ankle and will then clean it up and sculpt it properly. Not sure I will use a specific chamber for colours but will be using second edition rules.

Converting Mk.6 into Mk.5 is a surprisingly fun endeavour I've found:

Thigh cables are made from tartaros terminator lightning claws, studs are from micro beads bought of ebay and the knee pads are made from hole punching plasticard and then cutting the resultant circles in two, then trimming and cutting until they fit a bit more with the curvature of the armour.

Unfortunately, I came across this example of Mk.5 Heresy Armour after I'd already cut off the knee area of the above:

So, the next 5 will have the origknal Mk.6 legs, but with more studs.

Also, have to experiment with making banding/cabling(?) out of cable ties...

Love your MkV!

I finished another batch of Ultramarine glory. 8 Tacticals done.

I tried a different approach this time. I thinned the UM Contrast and I think it worked well with the shoulder pads and the helmets. But I fumbled with the Forgeworld UM shoulder pad - of course :-/ The white was not thin enough.

With the next batch I will try to mix both techniques. Applying Contrast as it is on everything but shoulder pads and helmets.

20 done, 25 more to go!

I love the older Mk III and the Mk IV. To me they are they are better in every way compared to the newer marks besides the scale. I have 60 Mk IV but only 10 of the old Mk III.

It's the other way around for me. I have a ton of old MkIIIs and some MkIVs.

I also prefer the older kits because you have way more freedom to build them how you want.

The older kits do look nice and I have also a lot MkIIs and VIs but I prefer the older ones for the sake of throwing parts at them and see how they turn out.

Those look awesome, well done.

I've been playing around with custodes bits from the new kit and found that the new heads look better on Astartes than on the actual Custodes. I personally think they are better scaled than the regular marine heads. The top one is the Custodes with the tubes cut off the sides and some GS fudging and the second one is an Astartes head from the assault weapons sprue.
