Denizens of the Fang,

Every now and then we get brand new Space Wolves players in here that are curious about what to buy, and where to start.  I put together this little Google Document to spell it all out for those folks, with some explanations on why I make those recommendations.  Thought this would be helpful for any new folks joining the Space Wolves bandwagon, after the recent release of Psychic Awakening: Saga of the Beast.

Enjoy,

Val

Guide to Buying Space Wolves Units for New Players.

Where are the Long Fangas? Rune priests? Wolf Priests? Wolf lord?

If anyone wants to start wolfing today I also will recomend Ragnar Blackmane.

A quick suggestion, put dates an your suggestions and each time you change the suggestion due Rules changes or new units appearing, you ut the new entry with a new date, so you can track the history

Check out the last two paragraphs in the document.  The one with the heading of The Rest discusses things like characters (including Bjorn and the new Primaris Ragnar Blackmane).  The one with the heading of Legacy Units discusses units like Grey Hunters and Long Fangs.

Excellent suggestion on adding the 'as of' date.  I have now added that as a header for each page.

Appreciate your feedback.

Folks, I've made some updates to the Buying Guide based on all of the new information that we've received lately about 9th edition, as well as the upcoming units that will be released soon in the Indomitus Box, etc.

  • 1 month later...

I have gone into the Buyer's Guide to add the following:

Update:  I wouldn’t buy anything right now.  The future of Space Wolves units is too much in flux right now, as we’ve seen from multiple recent leaks on unit characteristics and weapon profiles.  We also know that the points increase for units and weapons that we just had with the release of 9th edition are all going to change again.  The new 9th edition Space Marines codex is scheduled to be released in October, and the Space Wolves supplement should follow soon after.  Only then will we have a better, fuller, picture of unit effectiveness and efficiency.  Until that point, I wouldn’t recommend that anyone make new purchases - give it a couple months for the new books to drop, and for the dust to settle on the impact of the major changes that we all now know are coming.

The recommendations below were good, in my opinion, for the final months of 8th edition, and the initial release of 9th edition.  However, we don’t now know which, if any, of the units below will be the right ones to move forward with in planning out your new Space Wolves army for the future.  So, my advice to everyone right now is to be patient, wait for the full picture to be revealed, and then we’ll all go from there.  At that point, I will update this Guide to make it useful once again.
