Skywrath
Some of those characters would be good for conversions, but that’s it at this point it seems. Yeah.. I already converted Feirros into a GK techmarine, but I'm not sure (at least mine) LGWS would allow me to field a primaris on the table-top, because we don't have primaris yet. Not to mention it's not aegis terminator armor, doesn't have a crux terminatus, etc, etc. However, I could see an argument towards using those Bladeguard, as their helmets look like purifier helmets. But even then that's sketchy. To be fair, with this release, it seems like the GK might be slipping down the meta list it seems, towards unplayable - I think we will struggle to field an answer towards those new units and the subsequent new ones. Looks like it's back to playing Dark Angels for me , not that it's a bad thing, but I was hoping we would get something.. *sigh*. Also Trollbeard check your PM's. WAR
I’ve been playing sisters of battle since 1997, when they first were released. I’m used to heart ache from GW. One thing we have to remember is we are not one of the Big 4 Space marine chapters that are given everything, like the Dark Angels, Wolves, Blood Angels, and codex marines (to include Deathwatch). It is one of the many perks of having multiple armies and helps to break up the tedium of the same models over and over.....even at the screaming of our wallets. Honestly this maybe the first time since 3rd ed that I’m wanting to buy the starter (friend wants the crons so it’s cheaper for me). Is it for cause there is new stuff for my GK or Sisters....Nope. It’s like why I always buy the new edition rule books. I like playing the game. Don’t care that I don’t get new shiny toys that often. It’s nice cause I’m able to work on my forces at my pace and not run out and get the new hotness model. Which gets pricey and can increase painting/ building burnout. My advice to all take a deep breath, continue working on what you have, do some touch ups, and get ready for 9e. What I meant by the above on top of what I said, is that with 9th looming around the corner (and no, I wasn't expecting GK to be announced, however I hoped we would get at least some news) is that there is going to be a shake-up of points, troops, and profiles. Which means aside from that Techmarine that I painted, a Ven Dreadnought, LR Vortimer-Redeedemer and that GK apothecary that is going to probably arrive tomorrow, I don't know what else to add to my collection. Realistically, the only thing my GK army needs to be fielded on the table-top is Strike Squads, 3 of them to be specific or 2 boxes worth. As 8th is the edition where I started, and I don't have any information on how the game worked before, I wasn't sure whether there might be primaris GK announced, which would "burn" the purchase I would have made. No information, plus uncertainty is pushing me back towards an army I do have completed - the Dark Angels, which luckily for me is mostly primaris. But yeah, doesn't seem like it's our time to shine, just yet, and as I mentioned earlier it will cost us. Every new reveal to to the big 4 chapters, is another tool that can be used to counter us. At the moment, we are near the top I presume, but keep those reveals coming for the space marines, and we will get quickly left behind the dust. This doesn't mean I will stop playing Grey Knights. WAR
I’d add the strike squads cause you’ll need them unless you are going all terminator route. I know it sucks but gw has to focus on the pushing the story forward to get so the big 4 get shiny new toys but that gives time for the sculptors to fine tune everything for the GK when they get released. Which my friend and I were talking that after 9e drops Codex necrons and codex astartes will shortly follow and the oldest 2 8e codecs will be Thousand Sons and GK so we are do for an update hopefully the end of the year. Very interesting perspective. Can I get you to elaborate a bit more on how the GK codex is the oldest? I assumed all the codices were released roughly at the same time, and who knows, when we open ours, there might be primaris entries! With the strike squads and the changes to CP's, are strikes still going to be useful for us? Assuming we won't need strike squads, the next top contender might be an interceptor squad for movement purposes. Valerian
Very interesting perspective. Can I get you to elaborate a bit more on how the GK codex is the oldest? I assumed all the codices were released roughly at the same time, When 8e dropped, they started releasing codexes for that new edition at a pace of 1 or 2 per month. It probably took about 2 years to get all of the codexes out, and then they started releasing the Psychic Awakening update books. Grey Knights codex is among the oldest, as it was one of the first to get published in 8e. Note that this pace or release is much, much, faster than they've ever done before. In the past it would be several months between codexes, and some armies went a whole edition cycle without getting one. For example, Grey Knights got a codex in 3rd edition (with Daemonhunters), but not again until 5th edition and then 7th edition. We didn't get covered at all in 4th or 6th. The fact that they cranked out, like 24+ codexes in two years or less is hella impressive. But if we were to disregard what you wrote for a moment, then what's the point of magnetising, when one unit could be better than the other? I believe that is what I was trying to convey by my previous query. Skywrath
Probably. Seeing how most marines are going to go primaris (with 2W), we will need something other than 1 wound models (i.e strike squads) to hold the field. I expect them to be where our strike-squads are now. Every moment new primaris units get announced, is another slap in the face for our ability to be viable. WAR
Points/ Power Level will be the deciding factor for Terminators vs Strike as troops, imho. With the Paladin bomb its about cheaper models to allow the points to be spent on the paladins. I plan on building 3- 5 man Terminator squads for Troops but I'm building my GK Army as the 7th Brotherhood and following the Current Strength of the 7th Brotherhood- minus all the scribes/ astropaths and 2-3 of 5 interceptor squads. I'm adding Librarians (4) , Chaplain, Techmarine with 2-3 Servitor squads (2 have dual heavy bolters and 2 normal servitors), Paladins, Purifiers plus various Transports (2 magnitized land raider chassis, another land raider if FW opens back up, multiple razorbacks) and Fliers (Storm Hawk, Storm Talon, Storm Raven) plus Dreadknights Corvus Fortis 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/364081-9th-edition-implications-for-the-gk/page/5/#findComment-5542201 Share on other sites

Seizeman
Overwatch will still hit on 6+ only. Apparently, tau get to overwatch with 2 units instead of one. This is a massive buff to combat armies and grey knights in particular. Just the amount of time you save by not having to roll and reroll a million times makes the game better. Captain Coolpants
These with the new terrain rules are pretty cool! Being able to get +1 to hit in overwatch or combat in certain defensible terrains is interesting.. Completely off topic, I do really wish they brought back the weapon skill chart. To have weapon skill 8 characters and such was pretty cool. Corvus Fortis
To have weapon skill 8 characters and such was pretty cool. Yes, but "cool" isn't equal "good for the game". High weapon/ballistic skills were basically rerolls and now we have tons of them. I miss different psychic discilines, but, in fact, few powers were really good or useful. They were still cool for narrative stuff. Valerian
I, too am glad that the WS charts are long gone. A flat roll is so much simpler, and makes the game go a whole lot faster. Skywrath
I, too am glad that the WS charts are long gone. A flat roll is so much simpler, and makes the game go a whole lot faster. Agreed. As I started in 8th, there was a lot of things to get my head around, and less things is better in this case. I do appreciate the depth this game goes into, but some of the things there were unnecessary. Unfortunately, the above change is a double-edged sword (pun intended). Just because we can survive overwatch, doesn't mean we can do it ourselves. Seeing how we are going to be pretty much locked into a Paladin Bomb Archetype (well assuming we don't get primaris), we would be constantly CP starved. Which means that we might not even get the option to fire overwatch. The reason I say we are going to be locked into that archetype, is because of the fact that we still have 1W units, and the only thing, as you all pointed out can survive is the paladins. Still have to see how those CP changes benefit/screw us, but eh.
