So, someone mentioned on reddit that there has been 46 Space Marines releases since Tyranids got new minis back in 2014.
I was curious and wanted to check it out and hooo boy...

Total: 146 kits

Weird. Or well, maybe not that weird in economic terms, but Nids are such an iconic part of 40k. Then again... one could argue that GSCs are basically a Tyranid faction.

As much as Adeptus Mechanicus and other Imperium dudes are in the same faction as the Space Marines.

But then the list would get even longer.

It’s shocking to see how many Marines releases there’s been.

Then again, marines are GW’s cash cow so they’re bound to milk it as hard as they can!

Can’t believe Tyranids haven’t had new models in so long. Here’s hoping we get the treatment Necrons are getting in 9th.

I’d settle for a LoW kit to be honest.

Wow, that is a LOT of kits. That said, even the oldest kits in the Tyranid range (the Gaunts) are still perfectly fine; we've got a few resin models left but that's about it. I would like to see some new units, specifically a Lord of War, but outside of a dual Biovore/Pyrovore kit and a Lictor kit, I'm not sure what else needs an actual update. The return of Shrikes into the Codex would be nice, with a corresponding upgrade kit for wings.

I will say, a plastic Hierodule would be awesome. But honestly I'm always down for more new monsters, so if they did give us something totally original, that's fine with me.

Our time will come, and the galaxy and our wallets will weep.

Pretty much every race is in the same boat: Dark Eldar, Tau, guard, Necrons, etc. Even orks only got the speed freeks buggies. GW has been all out on primaris and replacing old 2nd ed characters. Necrons last release was what, in 2010? Maybe Szeras in 2014? Even Eldar have had what, 8 new models since 2012.

Cryptek in 2018. Szeras in 2020.

18 (15 if you don't count the Ynnari stuff):

Farseer

Spiritseer

Wraithknight

Crimson Hunters

Hemlock Wraithfighter

Wraithblade

Wraithguard

Illic Nightspear

Farseer on Jetbike

Windrider Squadron

Autarch

Eldrad Ulthran

Yvraine

Yncarne

Visarch

Spiritseer

Howling Banshee

Jain Zar

Which model was it?

Last release was Toxicrene/Maleceptor and Tyrannocite/Sporocyst.

It was actually the current broodlord, that came out in the Deathstorm box in December 2014.  The Toxicrene/Maleceptor + Tyrannocyte/Sporocyst were about a month earlier.

Ha yes this is correct.

For some reason I was thinking of the last new kits we got, but the Broodlord was the actual last release.

The other side of the coin is that if you play 'nids and you care about that sort of thing you've been 100% painted for more than five years and you've spent 1/50th of what a Marine player has spent staying up on the new releases (because the codex gets an update once in a while even if nothing else does).

I'm not trying to claim it isn't :censored:, because it's totally :censored:, just that it's not completely without any upside.

Do not dodge the swear filter

I'd say Tyranids "suffer" from having a robust and diverse range of models that has been plastic for a long time. It's not like Guard where there's only a single regiment of identical troops, or Eldar where half the lineup is pewter, or even Orks where the unit options are comparatively limited. The sculpts and sprue design is certainly much older and less advanced than the current Primaris/Necrons for example but the models are there and the used market is huge. New models would be nice but I think Tyranids could be quite competitive if they got a good codex, new models aren't critical to that IMO.

I agree with this. ^^^

Despite their age the Tyranid range has some of my favorite models, including what I consider to be the best sculpt GW ever released. I like the Primaris line better on average, but Tryanid Warriors remain my favorite sculpt of all time.

They need better rules a lot more than they need a range update.

...the gaunt kit could use an update, but I wouldn't want it to see a radical redesign.

Part of it is that the Tyranid range is one of the most coherent of all the Xenos armies, with a very high percentage already in plastic. Even amongst the older plastic kits, most of them have aged pretty well. Compare that with something like Craftworld Eldar, where so many of the core units are still Finecast or even metal, and a not-insignificant number of the sculpts date back to 2nd Edition.

You could pretty reasonably round off the entire Tyranid range with three kits:

Biovore/Pyrovore dual-build kit

Lictors (with option for Deathleaper)

Red Terror (or re-done Raveners with option for Red Terror)

There is maybe a case for a dedicated Spore Mines kit similar to the Tau Drone mini-sprue, but given that there are some in the Hive Crone and Tyrannocyte kits, and you'd probably put some in with the Biovore too, they wouldn't need to bother. There's already precedent for units that only come with other kits (Ripper Swarms, Necron Scarabs)

That's not to say I wouldn't like to see more. Genestealers would benefit from an overhaul to make them a bit more dynamic, and the benefit there is that it's relevant for two different armies. But new units would be the best; Tyranids offer GW such an opportunity for creativity. They can create all kinds of outlandish stuff and all they need to justify it is the idea that they harvested the Biomass from this weird species on planet glooblyboopers.

I think a new gaunt kit could probably be justified, the old one has some very awkward cut-lines that makes them hard to assemble without any visible gaps. It's hardly necessary though, not when the base Eldar Guardian and Ork Boys boxes date back to 1999.

Yea, the nid plastic range is ok, but it's the sprue-tech that has advanced and left them behind - the empty space from the year ~2000 sprues like termagants is unreal. They could easily put 10 termagants on one frame and save £ on shipping.

Same applied to necrons and eldar guardians with the old '4 models to a frame' method. Just look at the new necron warrior sprue in Indomitus to see how far GW have come.

Nid Warriors I think got s recut in maybe 2010 - 2012(?) with the release of the trygon, so theyre ok. I think the carnifex was the first large plastic kit in ~2007? There's a lot of space on that frame also.

Nids could do with:

renewed gant sprue

renewed gaunt sprue

lictor kit

bio/pyrovore

Then wishlising;

winged warrior kit (3 models, makes shooting and assault versions)

Move malanthrope from FW to plastic

Parasite of Mortrex kit.

  • 3 weeks later...

Yea, weirdly since I posted the above, I got my hands on Indomitus, and the Necron Warrior Sprue there comes with 10 warriors, each with 2 weapons and 2 head options, and I think 3 scarab swarms. I think on the same frame area you get 8 Termagants, one weapon option.

Re-doing the 'gant frames has to be a high priority for GW

Maybe comparing to Space Marines isn't the best, given every army will pale in comparison especially these days... :ermm: I have the older Warrior models which is a notable difference to the current ones, what a difference 13 years makes (2000 to 2013)! Though the bits are largely identical it is good to have them all in the same space (I have been using the gaunt box devourers, as they're the same sprue). Would be good to see these improvements made elsewhere, though I'd expect better now as this was seven years ago

It feels like the Troop choices are what languishes most as nids are not alone here, perhaps as they are "less exciting" but hopefully GW rectifies this soon. The gaunts are good overall as a design, but some more variety in posing/arms would go a long way along with the standard improvements from sculpting/technology a new design would bring :smile.:
