Looks like DA have a great answer for Mortarion

With all the new tools from the Supplement, it looks like a RW character with the Reliquary of the Repentant, plus fully buffed Eradicators can drop Mortarion in a single shooting phase.

First, RW Character races up to within 3" of Mortarion (he can turbo-boost and also use the Strat for double move, so guaranteed 32" move), reducing his Invul to a 5++.

Next, power up the 6 Eradicators with +1 to hit (RW Land Speeder "paints" Mortarion with the Strat for +1 to hit), rerolls of 1s to hit/to wound (Capt and Lt auras), and +1 to wound (Chaplain Litany for nearest target).

That's 12 shots, 11-12 hits, 9-10 wounds, 6-7 failed 5++ saves, and 27-28 average Dmg after -1 Dmg from Disgustingly Resilient is accounted for.

With average rolling, Mortarion's 5+++ FNP drops the damage down to 18-19 damage inflicted which, coincidentally, is exactly enough to kill him.

Of course, this Strat requires multiple character buffs to the Eradicators and also putting a RW character on a "suicide mission" near enemy lines, but on the other hand, reliably dropping almost 500 points of enemy combat power/warlord/ buffing capacity on turn 1 is probably worth the risk (not to mention the psychological impact on your opponent when his Primarch gets "one shotted" out the gate).

This will not work, Mortarion cancel the Reliquary aura with living plague, you need to add a Librarian to cancel the aura of mortarion that cancel aura in a 3'' radius for this strat to work.

On a side note, DA have multiple way to hurt Mortarion and are probably the best armies to take him down.

Actually, it is not an aura (though it behaves like one), so it is not affected by Mortarion's anti-auras WL Trait.

Reliquary does not have the "Aura" key word (like all other things that are auras have in 9th edition).

My bad, your right, now who's the best ravenwing character for the job...

Primaris Chaplain on bike with Stubborn tenacity warlord trait are a good choice. He can do the buff to the range unit and move to be in position, may even charge something it you don't need the extra move strat. The T5 and 7w with 4++ will be hard to take out and if he can charge, will be able to move out of combat with Swift strike stratagem for 14-17'' (+3'' if in dev doctrine). If he can't charge, he's not easy to kill with the 4++ in melee and he can fight back even if kill.

For a crazy combo, add a full bike squad to add 4 melta shot in close range to be extra safe and to protect your chaplain. If from a 2nd company they are objective secure and this will put lots of presure on your opponent that was thinking the front/flank was safe with Mortarion when he die and is replace by a full squad of objsec Ravenwing bike and Chaplain. 700 is not alot to take out Mortarion.

What about a Talonmaster, so it gives that +1 to hit himself?

Edit: Thalonmasters can't use the eye, duh

Talonmaster can't take Reliquary of the Repentant either. It's bike model only.
