Bolter Assault:

Following Svelk's cue, Vesalius primed and hurled a second Krak grenade at the Mortifier before withdrawing to take cover behind an adjacent pillar. The explosive detonated satisfyingly against the pain-engine's right arm, causing some minor damage, though not enough to compromise its operation from what he could tell. Perhaps luring the crazed machine into overextending its position could allow for the squad's eccentric techmarine or one of the devastators to unleash a withering barrage upon its likely more lightly armored posterior? Vesalius had little desire to put his life on the line for any of the Iron Gods, but knew the Kill-Team would succeed or fail in equally bloody fashion depending on the course of action they took in the coming moments. He mulled his options as he crouched behind a column of masonry and scowled at the bleak calculus of their circumstances.

Ithan lets out an eager laugh as he casually adds another primed Krak grenade to the cluster. It explodes low and the mechanical monster misses a step, stumbling momentarily before righting itself. The Techmarine frowns and quickly draws his combi-weapon instead. After a moment, the plasma coils running along its spine begin to glow blue-white.

Squad Alpha

Draak charges along the walkway at the top of the stairs to gain a bead on the Heavy Bolter wielding Sister of Battle (E).

Coming to an optimum position of arc (Under Svelk Diamond in Key), Draak once again smoothly draws his Bolt Pistol with his left hand and shoots at his target.

BS52 Target: 52, Result: 30, Pass 2DoS. Location: 30 = 03 Head. Damage: 1d10+9. Damage Roll: (4, 7) 7 + 9 -3 (AV7 - 4 Pen) - 4 (TGH Bonus) = 9 Damage.

Svelk slams his axe into the statue to arrest his momentum, glaring at the charging war machine. He sees explosions erupting all around it, shrapnel tossed against the sarcophagus to no effect, the slight tumble as gouges are blown into the motive mechanisms.

 

"GO FOR THE LEGS!!!"

 

He extends his arm in front of him, sighting down the length of his bolt pistol. No more wasted shots.

Brynjarr could not see how many guards had already headed to the control room to confront the others, but it was time to do something about it. Stepping out of the wind and into the complex proper he saw one guard just about to disappear into a side corridor, it be tight, but there was just enough time to snap a bolt round towards that guard.

The second shot of the bolt pistol howled in close, and hampered by untangling himself from the line, and Radago's demand of the next kill, his reactions were slowed.

Orphiel blink-clicked an acknowledgement to the Breacher, and letting Radago slake his thirst for violence on the Arbites Officer, he let Argo swing by the strap across he chest, and the sound of Zachariah's Steel scraping free of the scabbard tested the air, before he lunged, a hammer to Brynjarr's anvil, a sword to Radago's jugular dagger thrust.

The size and power of a Space Marine at close quarters was proven by the struggle of humanity against the Emperor's Genhanced bioscience.  The sheer size and power Orphiel could bring to bear tore the Arbite off his feet, and in one well-aimed toss, sent him crashing into his comrade hastily charging in from behind.  Both bodies slammed into the wall, and each other, as asteroids colliding in the void.

 

Bone crunched, flesh bruised and carapace armour flexed under the heavy impact of one sturdy brawler catapulted into another.  Their collision elicited pained grunts followed by a tangle of limbs and clattering equipment.

 

Orphiel bore them close attention, but they slopped down into flat recumbence, unconscious.  He grunted a small note of approval as the other Arbites in range took one look, and may have licked their lips in the barest hesitation of what they witnessed, but secretly in was in satisfaction both Judges were alive.

 

The Emperor would provide them with the fighting chance he gave all his soldiers.  He rolled his shoulders and addressed the squad vox.

The Sororitas war machine stomps forward, slowed but not stopped by the storm of shrapnel that explodes around it. Even as it does, it raises both arms and unleashes a wild torrent of its own. Heavy bolter shells tear into the marble of the statue where Svelk and Ithan shelter, blasting away chips that hammer against their battle plate. On its other arm a pilot light flares. With a whoosh, liquid heat and light are forced under and along the colonnade. The poor unfortunate trapped within the sarcophagus screams again, loud enough to be heard over the gunfire, and is forced to continue her advance.

Vesalius ducked behind his pillar as a great gout of burning prometheum burst forth from the Mortifier's arm-mounted heavy flamer, threatening to immolate the apothecary. Fortunately, Odysseus' psychic shield proved to be a potent insulative barrier which robbed the inferno of most of its fury. The masonry behind him blackened under the fiery onslaught, as did any exposed pieces of his armor, but he had avoided being consumed.

Whilst Draak walked to the bottom of the stairs he tracked the heavy weapon operator of the Sisters of Battle, but the Mortifier drew his ire. It was unorthodox, a corruption of the Sentinel STC.

 

Whilst the Mortifier had twisted to fire its heavy flamer it had moved its legs for better balance. Draak unleashed Grendel to quieten down the offended STC.

Draak's burst of bolter shells penetrates deeply into the mechanisms of the Mortifier's left leg before exploding. Something vital has clearly been damaged, for the monstrous machine suddenly slows, struggling to put its massive weight on the twisting limb.

 

Ithan Khor grins, ignoring wounds from exploding bolts and pieces of flying marble alike.

He then raises his glowing weapon and aims it carefully at the arm that has just spewed forth a flood of deadly flame towards his squadmates.

 

"We are quite warm enough, thank you."

 

He fires and an incandescent ball of energy strikes the limb just below the shoulder. When the light fades, the arm has been damaged but the buzzing circular saw still spins fitfully.

Squad Beta:

The unengaged Arbites suddenly skid to a halt or pause in raising their weapons to return fire. They seem to be listening to something you cannot hear. As one they begin to retreat, a few loosing off shotgun rounds as they go, but more as a deterrent than a real attempt to harm you.

You edge forward and almost immediately see why. The Arbites' commanders have quickly realised that their troops cannot hope to face you piecemeal and have therefore pulled them back and formed them up as a unit at a choke point within the facility. They are waiting for you.

As you advance, you might catch a glimpse of a figure in a dark blue greatcoat disappearing behind the Imperial lawmen.

One target down, swing his sight round to the next Arbites Brynjarr noticed that the two in front of him where falling back to meet with reinforcements coming from further in. Sensing the opportunity he dashed forwards into cover of an open storeroom door way.

 

Orphiel confirmed further kills over the squad vox and moments later appeared in the side corridor the first guards had headed into, that side was obviously clear.

 

Refocusing on the guards down the main entrance way, they had now reformed at the direction of some Officers. Clustered together like that in the bulkhead door they opportunity for a grenade was just too good, stepping forward he arced a frag grenade over the front line.  

 

Out of the corner of his eye he just caught the blur that was Radago dash forwards and impact into the unprepared guards, leaping back at the last moment, as if synchronized with airborne grenade.

Officer A goes before me, will re-jig as required.

 

Any chance to try and win by guile and misdirection was gone.  One or two casualties could have been explained as a misunderstanding, the still living but unconscious men a peace offering.  As Radago launched up and over and Brynjarr tossed a grenade, Orphiel settled his sights and snapped his shot selector with his thumb.  Such a tightly packed mob was asking for trouble from any foe such as the Astartes.  A panicky mortal mob could be cowed by the shotguns and cudgels.  Not so here.

 

Half stood in cover form the doorway, he braced into firing stance and took aim, pushing out the storm bolter against the strap to add tension.  His armour would absorb the rest.

Despite the casualties inflicted upon them in the confines of the bulkhead door the guards held their ground, and reinforcements were still streaming in.
