The Battle Sisters throw themselves forward, raising their favoured trinity of bolter, flamer and melta. It is enough firepower that most foes of the Ecclesiarchy would be utterly destroyed. Thankfully, the Astartes are made of sterner stuff. Not that the attack is easy to bear. Most of the Kill-Team suffer, but your psyker most of all.

Maybe it was the wind. Maybe it was the gravity.

Either way, Svelk could only watched as his grenade rebounded off the very edge f the paraphet, spralling away to detonate harmlessly against the side of one of the Rhinos. To add insult to injury, he heard another nearby explosion and felt shrapnel lightnly clatter off his armour from one of the other Astartes' own errant throws. Damn this place.

Above him, the muzzles of four heavy bolters appeared, awkwardly balanced so they amed down towards him.

Damn this place to the void.

The Sororitas had difficulty aiming due to the angle, but but mnay of the shots that missed him hit the rock face instead, sprayhing him with gouts of stone and steel, even as a direct hit to his arm almost wrenched himself from his handhold.

Damn them to the void.

Ire brimming through his veins, Svelk slammed his combat knife into his sheath and triggered his jump pack, punching straight upwards. In the split-instant he was hurtling past the startled heavy weapons bearers, his hand lashed out to grab one of their shoulders, yanking up the unfornate mortal with him. The sudden weight of an additional suit of power armour rapidly arrested his descent, and a moment later he cut out the thruster.

He landed feet first, in the pillbox, next to the wall bordering the abyss. She landed on her back halfway across the barrier, before Svelk flipped her over it and sent her tumbling down into the darkness.

There, he thought, speaking to the planet's hunger. Are you satisfied now?

The next one along was still attempting to bring her heavy bolter to bear. Too slow, too cumbersome a weapon. He drove a kick into her abdomen, driving her into another of the fanatics and bowling them both over. The Sister still standing had been faster, dropping the heavier weapon and drawing her bolt pistol and combat blade.

He was faster. His knife and axe-rake were already in hand again. The latter swung out, knocking the pistol wielding arm away. With he former he stepped in and drove the knife straight through the Sororitas helm's eyepiece. The corspe fell away. The other two were back on their feet. The first was coming in low and hard on his left, the other approaching on the right, bolt pistol raised, trying to draw his guard.

He knelt into the attack on the left, putting himeself at the mortal's height and and blocking her charge, putting her inbetween him and her fellow. He felt his head pushed a millimetre back as a bolt round burst upon the nearer sister's pauldron, oculars blinded for a second as more shards of metal scraped past him, Then he was standing again, shifting, hurling the first Sororitas away to join her comrade below. There wasn't even a sound as she fell.

There, have another one. On me.

Without hesitating he threw himself at the last standing Sororitas. This time it was the knife which parried a blow while the axe-rake bit into the Battle Sister's side. Still she remained standing.

Round 2:

 

The Sororitas are massing ever closer, ready for a final push to retake the Narthex. But over the noise of battle, another sound can be heard. The drone of jet engines approaching.

 

The shuttle passes over the bridge at low altitude, dorsal heavy bolter sending a stream of shells into the Ecclesiarchy tanks as it passes. They explode against glacis plates and hatch covers, showering the Sisters beneath with deadly shrapnel. A handful fall, caught by lucky bolts that hit between armour joints.

 

At first glance you assume that it is your own shuttle, come to provide airbourne fire support. But then it moves to hover a few metres above the landing field out beyond the bridge, and as the rear ramp opens you realise that its payload is far more deadly than a few bolt shells.

A quick peek from the reflective glass of the shuttle's starboard porthole displayed the battle in glorious detail, the shimmering force dome slowing or even preventing impacts on the rest of the Squad, bunkered down against the fusillade projected by the Sororitas.

 

The firepower and armour on display were something worth seeing, and Orphiel felt a small stirring of the needless waste.  A Preceptory such as this would be one of the first bastions of defence against xenos attack or uprising, and now this world, as poor and dilapidated as it was, would be stripped of another layer of protection.  It had a knock-on effect beyond the understanding of the common citizen.  Strategically, the Imperium was a smooth pool, once a stone was dropped in, it caused a ripple effect, with more and more resources contracting around the attacker until they were drowned or strangled.

 

Breaking this world broke that chain.

 

Orphiel sighed in his ruminations.  Perhaps that was Varn wanted.  Break the shield-wall, make taking the Solios Nebula easier by steps.  The Pride would fuel that ambition.  He smiled thinly, coldly.

 

The shuttle swept in over the far side of the bridge, hovering close enough for the rest of the Astartes to deploy.

 

He laughed under his helm, a bitter note spiking the humour.  Astartes.  His helm swivelled around to look at Radago S'ynek a few seconds, before moving onto Brynjarr.  There was perhaps at least one of them who could satisfy the accolade Matthias so foolishly craved.

 

The shuttle ramp swung open, and wordlessly, he fell the five metres to the ground, gravity cleaving at him, robe whip-snapping in the up-draught, until his feet buried in the shale and fractured granite of a Monastery's embankment.

 

He would kill the Sisters quickly.  Not for sport, or tallies, and certainly not for these ragged pirates' glory, but for mercy.

Standing on the viewing deck as Viorda Secundus grew before his eyes Brynjarr reflected on the day so far. Getting information out of Lang was a priority, and someone else was no doubt taking care of it, he however had had other priorities after they where back aboard the Dagger Thrust.

 

The Lake had been an unwelcome experience. The damage done to his armour, while only to the outer ablative layers, would take a great deal of work to repair. He had striped and checked the entire suite and the acid had thankfully not eaten deep enough to cause permanent damage. He had done what repairs he could while he was inspecting the individual parts, but for now it would amount to no more than a stop gap, there was simply not the time to carry out actual repairs.

 

He was unsure if Grandfathers will and the vectors of fate had been within this day, or against him. The same mistake in the void would no doubt have been entirely lethal, so that was fortunate. By the same token a mistake and falling like this should not have happened in the first place. He could have prepared better, cheeked the storm patterns more thoroughly.

 

 

The time had come to venture forth once more. ‘Two planets in one day’ he thought with a sigh, Grandfather was testing him this day.

Shells and melta fire struck against the kine-shield as through the haze of the impacts Odysseus watched the sisters turn on the command of one hidden amongst their ranks. A challenge offered and accepted.

 

Cutting down the first of the penitent sisters to reach him he focussed his psychic power towards those clustered on the bridge. The sisters were reputed to employ devices to dampen the power of the mortal psykers they hunted amongst the hives of the Imperium, let them now see the power of an Astartes.

 

A terrible sound of rending stone announced the coming of death as the ice and snow for a dozen feet around Odysseus boiled away cracking the stone underfoot as electricity arced outwards in all directions and the bridge... no the very earth seemed to shift in protest. For the briefest moment everything was still before the librarian reached forward hurling a bolt of psychic energy with a crack of thunder that threatened to throw all nearby from the bridge.

 

An instant later the bolt struck home amongst the heart of the sisters forces engulfing them in a blinding storm of witchfire.

Squad Alpha

 

Were it not for his helm's optical filtering, Vesalius might have been temporarily blinded by the sudden eruption of psychic pyrotechnics, courtesy of Kill-Team Cutlass's librarian. He winced slightly at the coruscating bolts of warp lightning, but remained still and exhaled as he squeezed Trypanon's trigger. Where Odysseus was a sledgehammer, brutalizing all in his path, Vesalius would be a surgical scalpel, infinitely sharp and precise, removing cancerous tissue where it was found. Tryapanon's near-silent report was easily lost in the din caused by the librarian's outburst and the resulting psychic gale.

As the Shuttle had swooped over the Convent complex on their landing approach Brynjarr had caught a brief glimpse of the situation below. It had been hard to tell the balance of the engagement that Alpha team was embroiled in. As his boots hit solid ground next to Orphiel he hoped that their arrival was in time should aid be needed.

 

Immediately in front of them rose the aged wall of the outer gate complex, defensive position facing outwards, though obviously unmanned. There had been some Sororitas on the roof, essentially unreachable from where Brynjar was. Climbing the walls would take time, and in any case the gate was open and he could see the rear hatch of a RH1N0. Time to cut off the reinforcements.

 

Dashing past the other two Brynjar activated his Power Axe, the hum of the nascent power field all but lost in the noise of battle. The hatch was unlikely to be unlocked, and Brynjarr did not seriously consider it as an option, instead aiming the full might of the axe at the locking mechanism, with the right cut the way in would be open.

 

Deftly sidestepping the falling ramp Brynjarr moved into the interior.  A lone Sister, visible through the half open interior hatch to the drivers cabin, turned her head to see what the commotion behind her was. She was unarmored and clearly young, a novice relegated to be a driver.

 

Axe pointing at the side door Brynjarr gave her a chance. “Discretion is the better part of Valor, scarper and by the grace of Grandfather you may live to see another dawn.” 

 

Free Action, put bolter away, and draw Power Axe.

The flaming behemoth that is Draak charged to the edge of the pillbox, he then vaulted the parapet and crunched down into snow below. The storm was aided by Odyseus but it was a mere gust to Draak.

 

Draak then lobbed a Frag Grenade expertly so that it bounced off the wall next to the Seraphim Squad. The grenade came to a halt and then exploded violently into the squad.

 

Immediately after throwing the grenade, Draak introduced the Seraphim Squad to Grendel.
