MithrilForge
Hi All, I normally frequent other forums but recently life has changed up a bit for me (in a good way I guess) So I'm looking at this forum as a new Home of sorts... We have finally managed the Aussie dream of owning a place ... it is a 2 bedroom apartment... but it's ours Now this has brought many new challenges...we used to live in a 4 bedroom house for many years and it ended up half full of 40k stuff most of it grey ...fast forward to now and i have practically gotten rid of (sold on eBay and also given away) Over 90% of it ... Now I'm left with 2 small Armies - orks & necrons and some boxes of models unopened....This leads me to this whole topic.... as i never ever thought about How much room our hobby takes up !! ++ KILL TEAM++ I have Zero room for new armies...seriously and was discussing with a mate what options there were for solving that new model/painting itch he suggested Kill Team, now when it (Kill Team) came out i made a small necron team and we played a few games and stuff but never really spent too much time and effort on it... but now I'm looking at it more seriously, as Kill Team seems to fit the bill for someone in my new situation, small 5-10 man teams, smaller board space and not huge amounts of terrain (i had to give away some huge majestic terrain pieces that I'd made ...at least someone else is enjoying them) and i can have several teams and not need a huge Glass display case (got rid of 2 of those as well ) or many carry cases. Now i see that there may be a rumour of Kill Team 2.0 around the corner and perhaps some Krieg models .... perfect timing if true... Also asking here peoples thoughts generally on Kill team and any tips etc on playing and advice or team building that they have learnt over time, Like...How much terrain do people use and is it ok not to have multi level stuff?... and does anyone else have space issues like I'm having now!?... I think I will use this as a Plog as well for all my new teams that i plan to make and play with... Although I think I will wait till I know if 2.0 is real yet and plan from there forwards.... firestorm40k
When Kill Team was released a couple of years ago, it brought me back to the hobby after 4 years away, for similar reasons - not so much space (although that was a factor), but I didn't want to paint another full army. You may want to wait until the new rules (assuming Saturday's reveal IS the 2nd Edition), but I'd start by seeing what you can take for the factions you want to play. I'm not really a competitive player, but there are good resources online if you want to know what the 'best' builds are for each faction. To be honest, I just started with whatever models I had (either from an existing army, or left over from other projects), and went from there. Terrain wise, again factoring your space requirements, if the price isn't an issue, there are a couple of the GW Kill Zone terrain sets that are decent buys (Fronteris and Munitorum) - the boards they come with are decent quality and fold up to about A4 size, which will be good for saving space. There's also the Command Edition terrain expansion that's worth considering, as that has a board the same size and similar amounts of terrain (at a slightly cheaper price than the Kill Zone sets). Another good thing about those sets is that once assembled, all the terrain should actually fit in the original box (along with the board). If the prices rule those out, there are plenty of other manufacturers making Kill Team sized mats (that can roll or fold up) and suitable terrain pieces :) While multi-level board set ups look good and can be fun to play on, I don't think they're 'standard' for KT - I've mostly played my games on a two-level set up (using Sector Mechanicus pieces). I hope this helps! :) MithrilForge and Dr_Ruminahui 2 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/370932-kill-teamfor-those-with-lessroom/#findComment-5717351 Share on other sites
Dr_Ruminahui
I think killteam (like necromunda) does play best with a board that it fairly dense with terrain including terrain that is 2 stories tall (or taller, though you don't really need any that is more than 2). As noted by firestorm40K, the killteam boxed sets of terrain tend to be a pretty good deal, and contain a a board. I think using only one of them for terrain would be a little light, though the Munitorium set would probably give the best terrain coverage of the ones currently available, having a nice ballance of LOS blocking and "scatter" terrain. LameBeard
Welcome to Kill Team! I realise I am very lucky that I have an actual house in an expensive part of the world, but I have never understood how people managed to play on 6’x4’ tables: that is not just bigger than a dining room table, it’s practically bigger than some dining rooms in the UK. So I am a big fan of the smaller boards, and as my kids grow up I realise more of my stuff will have to be sold or given away to make room for them (ironically I might have to get rid of my Warhammer to make room for their Warhammer). Kill Team is also good for slow/distracted painters like me, and for converters/kitbashers like me, can take a chance to make individuals/specialists. In the actual game, I believe multi-level helps balance the game - otherwise shooty factions can be overrun by melee factions. But my son and I usually play with fairly symmetrical forces, so this is less of an isue. In fact we usually play on a “map” - 2d depiction of 3D terrain. I used to look down my nose at this, as something for rpgs or board games only, but it saves space and set-up time and I think looks pretty good, good enough to be “immersive” and it cost just a few quid to put together. MithrilForge
Thanks for the responses guys . I should've said I do have some terrain left...i did not get rid of all of it ... i have 2 sets of thermic plasma conduit pipes with one set each of - plasma regulators,Heamotrope reactor, Ferratonic furnace and the containers box with the crane... so i do have a fair amount of terrain(that I'm attempting to cram into one large plastic tub ) that should be enough for kill Team?. @Firestorm - yeah i think i will wait and see if 2.0 is next on the horizon... @Lamebeard & Dr_R - good ideas for new terrain and the 2D terrain....might still think of using ideas like that as well Just got to wait for Saturday.... Dr_Ruminahui
Yeah, it sounds like you have enough, though at some point you may want to get some with different levels to it, as being able to better avoid your enemy's cover to be ballanced by the spots that you can't see below the model really add another dynamic to the game. My advice would be try it with the terrain you have, then get more to supplement it and/or to keep the game from getting stale. That's a great start for a thoroughly decent Kill Team terrain set up! :D If you want to add more multi-level terrain, the Fronteris Kill Zone set will compliment what you have nicely. The intact building is a good basis for expanding with the ruined pieces to make something multi-level (as I've done here: https://flic.kr/p/2ma5nEG), I've read that you can make some multi-level ruins as well by mixing the intact building pieces with the ruined sections in the set. I'm actually planning on buying another of these sets just to do that, actually! MithrilForge 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/370932-kill-teamfor-those-with-lessroom/#findComment-5717616 Share on other sites
Kierdale
I'm very interested in this thread! My Orks are likely to be my last real army as I too simply don't have the space for more. After these it's going to be kill teams. And I don't really have the time for big, full games of 40k (perhaps when my son is older). At the moment all we manage is the occasional game of Speed Freeks or the old Ultramarines board game (I remade it), so I'm keen to get into Kill Team. On the terrain point, I love making my own terrain and have been planning for some time to make some `matryoshka` terrain. I should probably post a sketch (or just get on with it and make it) but the idea is, similar to recent 40k/AoS starter boxes, that the box itself is one big piece of terrain (top and bottom) and inside you have more and more pieces getting fractionally smaller and smaller. If the top and bottom of the box are `full pieces` then these can be placed as big LOS-blockers and essentially platforms for more terrain to be put on top of. Make them say two stories high. Perhaps the next layer in is only a fraction shorter in all dimensions and is 2 two-corner pieces, the next layer is four corner pieces, etc. With the innermost layers one-storey ruined walls. I hope that makes sense :D A bit of foamcore board and you can make a lot of terrain which all fits into its own box. :) LameBeard, MithrilForge and Dr_Ruminahui 3 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/370932-kill-teamfor-those-with-lessroom/#findComment-5717790 Share on other sites
