Commisar Necros
Good morning gamers! So as it states I'm looking to help my mom get back into the game from when she collected some sororitas in 3rd, but I am wholly ignorant of what the state of the sisters are in 9th edition. Ive got the codex on the way and some proxies printed so she can get her color scheme down. I should be getting the codex here today or tomorrow, anything I should read over especially carefully? Any stuff you've come across that was hard for you to understand starting out? But now we've come to the real meat, what should she have in her army? I'm guessing a good place to start is the start collecting, but I dont see one. So is it down to individual squads? Honestly that might be helpful to keep her from being overwhelmed. I think shes going to start with the rule of cool and get some kind of centerpiece to get her motivated before starting on troops. Shell be mostly focused on what looks cool to paint and use rather than winning, but its not fun to just get dunked on every game so I would like to point her in a semi competitive direction. Last I played it was rhino rushing sisters and immoliators in to bolter/flamer purge whatever was stupid enough to be close then move on; is this still viable? I'm guessing more meltas than before, but the sisters still bring the heat right? Or go in a completely different direction? Dr. Clock
It looks like their combat patrol is coming out very soon - good selection for a collector, too! You can see what's in it on the B&C the Rumours/News page... There really are almost no 'bad choices' in the book right now. Seraphim are a little tough to use with inferno pistols, but... yeah there really aren't any 'duds', which is a great place to be! You don't need to rhino rush as much as in past either - 2-3 transports for key units will usually be sufficient given that the basic infantry are so efficient in small and even larger units. Yes to melta - my buddy runs 2 MM Immolators which is a great platform for 4 Melta shots, if a little spendy. Between them and a unit of Retributors with 3-4 MM it's... plenty to deal with once you sprinkle a few more across the line. Don't sleep on Ecclesiarchy flamers of all kinds either, though... 5 sisters with a HF is almost criminally efficient at clearing points. Cheers, The Good Doctor. I'd start with a Battle Sister squad and Celestine and build out from there. It looks like their combat patrol is coming out very soon - good selection for a collector, too! For the record, the Castigator (which isn't out yet) is terrible, the Immolator is fairly bottom tier, and if you like the Exorcist, get one and ONLY one. The Rhino is our best standard vehicle by a wide margin. Dread
Its great shes coming back. Now is a good time. When reading the new codex, check out what order she wants and look at units that fill the role for it. Thats one way. Also look at what model/ models she likes and build around that. There are alot of great units in the army and with the right combos they can be very ferocious. Post pics as she gets into it. Dr. Clock
For the record, the Castigator (which isn't out yet) is terrible, the Immolator is fairly bottom tier, and if you like the Exorcist, get one and ONLY one. The Rhino is our best standard vehicle by a wide margin. As a Drukhari player I can tell you that none of the tanks are a joke... I can kind of play cat and mouse with 36" DLs with alot of Sororitas melta units, especially on foot, but ~8 Autocannon and 9 HB shots a turn will paste plenty of other vehicles and infantry if left unchecked, and from a long enough range that hiding ain't easy. I would probably miss the HB and HF immolators, but 2x2 shot MMs can ruin people's day if they've meched up themselves or taken any big gribblies at all. As a Salamanders player I will tell you that I would take MM Razorbacks in a second, and that I envy those Castigator autocannons AND the third heavy bolter on there... Sure - massed infantry is its own special thing for Sororitas, but if you do end up taking some tanks they will put in work, even if it's just sitting on the back line stopping DS. OH - and don't forget a storm bolter dominion squad for Blessed Bolts. Always loved the idea of a storm bolter special weapon squad tbh. Cheers, The Good Doctor. Montford
Two Retributor Squads, one with Multi Meltas and the other with Heavy Bolters, is always a sound choice in a list, at least in my experience. Commisar Necros
Looking at the combat patrol, I'm not sure. She liked the repentia before, who doesn't like those massive chanswords, but thought the arco-flagelents and penitent engines were kinda dumb. Saying that, ebay exists and could help recoup costs for the box. So I printed proxies for 2 squads of sisters, an immoliator, canoness, dogmata(?i think has a rod not sword) and a hospitilar. Is this enough to make a decent 500pt list to learn all her rules before she commits? If those work to learn shell probably get the combat patrol to replace it and branch out from there. MM immoliator makes my guard senses tingle so ill point her towards that vs flames. Maybe fill it with some flamer dominions and just pick a point to purge. Ill talk it over with her. Thanks for the responses, For the Emperor Dr. Clock 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/371084-helping-a-newbie/#findComment-5723530 Share on other sites
Dread
The combat patrol is actually the same as the original sisters start set. Except only one pentinent engine instead of 2 and the add of the rhino. Other then that its the original first box set repackaged. Also not a fan of the new repentia from the get go. Wish i had my old metal ones back. Dominoris
For anyone starting Sisters, this is a good place to start: https://www.goonhammer.com/start-competing-sisters-of-battle-tactics/ I think shes going to start with the rule of cool and get some kind of centerpiece to get her motivated before starting on troops. Shell be mostly focused on what looks cool to paint and use rather than winning, The Sisters are in a good place now. Both competitive and for collectors. I would stay away from the Order of Our Martyred Lady myself partly because they are on the lower end of the orders and partly because they are done to death. Then again, I do have an OoOML metal army sitting in a display case right now ... But anyway, if you want a center piece that works with any order, the Triumph of Saint Katherine is a good place to get started. It is a bit pricey tho. https://www.games-workshop.com/en-US/Adepta-Sororitas-The-Triumph-Of-St-Katherine-2020 Another option at half the price is Morvenn Vahl but she is sold out at the moment. Check local game stores to see if you can find her. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/371084-helping-a-newbie/#findComment-5723653 Share on other sites
Joukernaut
Rule of cool is a perfectly fine way to start sisters. Their codex is very well written and while there are differences in efficiency, there’s hardly any “bad” units. The combat patrol can be a decent place to start if you are willing to buy 2-3 and or fill in the repentia and arco flagellants. One additional box of battle sisters will give you a wide spread of special weapons to create several usefull squads if battle sisters and dominions. The biggest problem of this route is that your starting army will have zero multimeltas, wich are very, very string at this moment. The only way to get themis by buying retributors and/or converting heavy flamers. moneywise I think I would go with one start collecting box, ebay repentia and flagellants, buy one box of battle sisters and one box of retributors and build a nice and diverse list to start of with. Once you’ve played a couple of games with the army you know what you like (melee vs shooting vs a bit of both) and what to get next. If money is not an issue i’d forgo the start collecting and just pickup regular battle susters and retributors. The kits are amazing value with al the different bits.
